Mark Rodgers, the agent for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson, said Thursday there is no deadline for a contract extension with the team. The agent for Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson said Thursday there was no deadline for getting a contract extension deal done.
Rodgers, whose appearance on 710 ESPN Seattle’s “Brock and Salk” program Thursday morning was his first public interview since negotiations began this offseason, said that with Wilson under his rookie contract for another season, he felt no pressure to get a deal done before the 2015 season.
Rodgers said Wilson, who has started 56-straight regular-season and playoff games since joining Seattle as a third-round pick in 2012, is financially prepared to play this season on the $1.542 million salary he’s scheduled to make under his rookie contract. Rodgers said “95 percent” of the speculation surrounding the contract talks has been inaccurate.

If no extension gets done this offseason, the three-year veteran could play out his rookie contract then play under the franchise player tag in 2016 and 2017, if necessary. Those one-year deals would likely top the $20 million mark, which isn’t exactly ideal for a Seahawks franchise looking to re-sign core players throughout the roster, Rodgers pointed out. Though Wilson hasn’t put up passing numbers like Aaron Rodgers (no relation) or Peyton Manning, Mark Rodgers said he believed the team knew the value of his client, particularly to a Seahawks squad he led to two-straight Super Bowl appearances. Rodgers said he was optimistic the two sides would reach an agreement that works for both parties, but that he wasn’t concerned with Wilson’s ability to perform in 2015 if there was no deal before the season began. Wilson missed the Seahawks’ first two organized team activities (OTA) practices after flying to Florida to support teammates Jimmy Graham and Cliff Avril, both of whom suffered personal losses over Memorial Day weekend.

He dismissed the idea that Wilson entered negotiations with the goal of reaching a deal that made him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL. But, he said, negotiations haven’t reached a place where one side is trying to exert leverage over the other. Rodgers said Wilson was flying back to Seattle Thursday night and would be present at the team’s OTA session on Friday.
