The left-hander won't pitch until a week from tomorrow, when Boston opens a series at Seattle. Associated PressBoston Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester delivers a pitch in the first inning against the New York Yankees during Boston's most recent visit to Yankee Stadium in New York.
BOSTON - The All-Star break will help give durable Jon Lester a 13-day rest between starts. Clay Buchholz will pitch Friday, when the Red Sox resume play against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim.
Beckett, Wakefield and Lester are on schedule to pitch in the July 25-27 series against the New York Yankees at Fenway Park. Sidelined with a wrist injury, Ortiz will not play but will be present at ceremonial events. Red Sox coaches Luis Alicea, DeMarlo Hale, John Farrell, Dave Magadan, Brad Mills and Gary Tuck are on the AL staff. BRIGHT FUTURE: Che-Hsuan Lin, 19, an outfielder for Boston's Class A Greenville Drive, was named MVP of yesterday's Futures Game at Yankee Stadium. Lin, who is from Taiwan, went 2-for-2 with a home run in the World's 3-0 win over the United States. He is hitting .251 with five home runs for Greenville, and his 26 steals lead all Red Sox farmhands. SEAN'S SPEED: Thrown out while trying to stretch a 390-foot single to right center Saturday, Sean Casey barely legged out a double off the wall in left center in the fourth, setting up Boston's second run. Images from the web about former red sox pitcher monbouquette dead at 78, hope you like them. JTA — When Craig Breslow entered Saturday night’s playoff game against the Detroit Tigers, FOX broadcaster Tim McCarver hailed the Boston Red Sox reliever — a Yale University graduate with a double major in molecular biophysics and biochemistry — as the smartest player in Major League Baseball. But with Breslow’s stellar performance this postseason, Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington is looking like the genius for acquiring the lefty in a trade last year. In Boston’s first two playoff series this season, Breslow has pitched eight scoreless innings, allowing three hits and five walks while striking out seven.
While creating the impressive postseason resume, Breslow also has solidified Boston’s reputation as a hub for Jewish players. This season, he’s not the only Jewish player and Yale alumnus on the team — there’s also catcher Ryan Lavarnway (now on the disabled list).
Breslow, 33, has expressed his Jewish pride throughout his career, saying he has fasted on Yom Kippur even while playing. He also has performed tikkun olam, the Hebrew term for “repair of the world,” with his charity efforts that include the Strike 3 Foundation he established in 2008 in the battle against cancer afflicting children (his younger sister is a survivor of thyroid cancer). Like Youkilis and Kapler, Breslow took home a World Series ring when the Red Sox won the World Series in 2007.

From 2007 to 2012, Breslow pitched for several teams before being traded by the Arizona Diamondbacks to the Red Sox in the middle of last season. McCarver wasn’t joking: Breslow’s Wikipedia page boasts several citations hailing him as the smartest big leaguer. Fueling such talk was the time during his first stint with the Red Sox that Breslow settled a bet over whether he could calculate how many times a baseball spins when it is thrown from the pitcher’s mound to home plate at 90 miles per hour. This time around with the Red Sox, however, the team is very much depending on Breslow to be a significant contributor to the playoff run.
They acquired him for that most specialized of pitching assignments: a lefty retiring left-handed batters in crucial situations. It’s an important role, enabling a team to stifle an opponent’s midgame rallies while saving its top reliever for the ninth inning to close out victories. In the series-clinching win in Boston’s opening playoff series against the Tampa Bay Rays, Breslow came on in the sixth inning for starter Jake Peavy and proceeded to strike out four of the five batters he retired.
In the American League Championship Series, Breslow again was a vital bullpen cog as Boston defeated Detroit in six games. Breslow has been blogging about his playoff experiences for the website of the Boston-area sports radio station WEEI. The team now finds themselves 11 games back in the American League East standings, after losing to the Houston Astros once again. Red Sox Chicken and Beer, Chicken and Beer, 2011 Collapse, Boston Red Sox, SWR Boston Red Sox, SWR World Series, St.
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Jon Lester (31) throws a warm up pitch prior to game five of the American League Championship Series baseball game against the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. The team lost over 90 games last season and now they have won 97 games as the American League east champions and it'll be the fourth time in history these two teams have played for a championship, with the Cards winning the first two before the Red Sox swept them out in 2004. The fact that Lester is starting the game is a great turnaround himself, as he was one of the players named in the "chicken and beer" incidents back in 2011 when the Red sox collapsed and missed the playoffs after leading the wild card heading into September. Lester admitted back in 2011 that the chicken and beer stuff was "wrong" and he was one of a number of players that were considered to be doing the wrong things down the stretch for the Red Sox.
Francona was fired after Lester and Josh Beckett along with John Lackey went 2-7 with a 6.45 ERA at the end of the season and that of course led to Valentine and the huge trade of Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford and now the team is looking back with smiles. The following game on Thursday could be just as electric, as Michael Wacha will take on crafty vet John Lackey and the rookie has been pitching some amazing ball this playoffs, going for two scoreless starts against the LA Dodgers in the NLCS and now he will face off in the World Series. Henry Owens delivers a pitch against the Houston Astros in the first inning of a baseball game Sunday, April 24, 2016, in Houston.
The Red Sox just want to maintain the 24-year-old's health for the long run, manager Terry Francona said. He left the game after the inning with a contusion of the left triceps, but X-rays were negative.

Back in 2006, in fact, Breslow was one of four Jewish players to play for the Red Sox, including Kevin Youkilis and Gabe Kapler. For his charitable works, Breslow is this year’s Red Sox nominee for the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award handed out by Major League Baseball.
But he actually spent nearly the entire season in the minor leagues and never threw a pitch in the playoffs, though he was on the roster of available players. Along the way he often drew more attention for his intellectual prowess than his mound exploits.
In Game 2, with the Tigers closing in on a commanding lead in the ALCS, David Ortiz blasted a grand slam into the Red Sox bullpen, just a few feet away from Breslow. Not every single Boston Red Sox pitcher has been a disappointment, no matter how any some of you Fenway faithful are right now. In fact, the pitching has been pretty brutal in the starting rotation and the bullpen, this season.
Louis Cardinals are visiting Boston for Game 1 of the World Series on Wednesday night at Fenway Park and the Red Sox come into the matchup as the home team after the AL won the all-star game and comes after an amazing turnaround from the Sox, who finished in last place in the east division last season. The team has won eight straight World Series games since that matchup and in Game 1 on Wednesday, it will be a prime matchup of Jon Lester and Adam Wainwright going at it as starting pitchers. That collapse got Terry Francona hired and led to Bobby Valentine and that terrible season led to John Farrell and this magical one in 2013. The team was up nine games in September for the wild card over Tampa Bay and on the final day of the season they played the Orioles and a rain delay pushed the game into the evening, which is when the Rays and Yankees also played. The collapse was tough to swallow and so was a 90-loss season, but now the team is back in the World Series and the chicken and beer incidents seem like ages ago now. Amazingly, just a year ago he was pitching in college and now he could be pitching in one of the biggest games of the year in all of baseball. Disappointments abound from some bigger names this season, making fans question whether some of their pitching staff from last year should not have been sacrificed like they were in the trades that Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington made.
When it was all said and done, the Red Sox blew the game and the Rays came back against the Yankees minutes part, putting them in over the Sox and changing baseball fate. The pressure he must be going through, considering his moves are what brought these disappointments to the team, must be unbearable at this point.
The record for consecutive losses on a particular day is 21, set on Tuesdays by the 1890 Pittsburgh Innocents, and tied on Tuesdays by the 1939 St.
