It got really ugly at one point, as Tom Brady‘s offense struggled to get anything going through the third quarter, but eventually they snapped out of it, and once again reached a 10-win season.
The Patriots set the tone with a dominating opening drive, as they just crammed the ball down San Diego’s throat for 16 plays.
But New England bounced back, as they scored the next 20 points, leaning on a dominant effort from their defense to get the win. Brady and the offense finished strong, scoring 10 big points in the final quarter, including a huge 69-yard touchdown reception by Julian Edelman. The bottom line is the Patriots are now 10-3, and set up perfectly to retain home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
So, we will have to keep an eye on the injury status of Mike Scifres, Ladarius Green, Corey Liuget, Marcus Gilchrist, and …. Quarterback Tom Brady #12 of the New England Patriots warms up before a game against the San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium on December 7, 2014 in San Diego, California. In yet another down to the wire finish, the New England Patriots surge past the San Diego Chargers to pull off a resounding 23-14 victory, pulling ahead to 10-3 on the season and making up for last week’s disappointing loss at Lambeau.
Both teams came in to this game with strong, playoff-qualifying records (and, so it seems, a significant number of fans present in San Diego). The Chargers picked up steam to finish off the first half, pushing ahead of the Patriots with  two touchdowns for a 14-10 lead heading into the third quarter; the host team would fail to score beyond this quarter, though, and this became their ultimate downfall.
After a frustrating third quarter for both squads, the Patriots finally came alive in the final fifteen minutes of play. With this loss, the Chargers have fallen to a somewhat-respectable 8 and 5 on the season, and will look to turn this around next week as they take on Peyton Manning and his Denver Broncos. Sunday Night Football tonight features a rare New England Patriots game in 2014 following a loss the prior week. New England (9-3) played in Green Bay last week and battled hard on the road, coming up just short against the Packers. With two touchdown passes last week, Brady now has 28 on the year and that ranks him fourth among all NFL quarterbacks. The Chargers (8-4) are now 1.5 games up on the Chiefs in the AFC playoff picture and can extend that lead to two games with only three to go if they can pull off the upset and beat the Patriots tonight. Philip Rivers has met Tom Brady five times in the past and lost every single one of those games. The New England Patriots and San Diego Chargers Sunday Night Football game on NBC wraps up a full day’s worth of NFL games.
Stephen Cooper #54 of the San Diego Chargers celebrates a pass interference against Aaron Hernandez #85 of the New England Patriots during the second quarter at Qualcomm Stadium on October 24, 2010 in San Diego, California.
But a Melvin Ingram sack prevented them from punching it in for six, so they had to settle for a field goal. The defense absolutely abused Phillip Rivers’ offense in the second half, giving up zero points, and a total of 216 yards. The Pats leaned heavily on Edelman and Gronk all game, as they combined to reel in 16 catches, for 228 yards, and two touchdowns. It came as a surprise, then, when both teams started off the game slower than expected; the first quarter failed to see the Chargers even announce their presence on the scoreboard, despite a seemingly steady progresssion down the field on more than one instance.
Brady managed to completely turn the score around and New England dominated play for the final home stretch to pick off Philip Rivers and the Chargers with ten unanswered points on the board. The final score was almost too high, considering the play seen out of both teams from start to finish.
Luckily, both teams that played tonight have a history of finishing December out strong; this should help out San Diego. With the Chiefs losing in AZ earlier today, the San Diego Chargers have a prime opportunity to take a big step toward clinching a playoff spot. It was the first game for Patriots quarterback Tom Brady against Aaron Rodgers, and it came down to the wire in a 26-21 Packers win.
The Patriots as a team have three players that have caught at least six touchdowns each, giving Brady multiple options and reads to put the ball into the end zone when the Patriots get into the red zone. Last week the Chargers snuck by the Ravens 34-33 and in the process won their third consecutive game. Even though the Patriots are on the road for tonight’s SNF game live, the Chargers come in knowing they are the underdog and knowing they might have to get past New England in the playoffs.

On their next series, Brandon LaFell coughed up the ball after reeling in a first down reception, which the Chargers promptly returned for a touchdown.
The offensive line struggled, but they came together at the end to give Brady the time he needed to make plays.

Partner that up with rest of the line playing below average, and it was a recipe for Rivers being under pressure all night. The team traveled to San Diego after the game so they have been on the West Coast all week.

This defense is legitimately elite, and they did all of this without Chandler Jones, and Dont’a Hightower.
The Chargers offense could not sustain a drive whatsoever, and the defense barely had time to catch their breaths. We hold the tie-breaker over the Ravens, but the Chargers need to find a way to beat Denver next Sunday. The New England Patriots have been outstanding coming off a loss as they are 36-4 since 2003 in regular season games following a loss.
If the situation ever arises again, I have faith that the Chargers could beat the Patriots.
The playoff race is heating up, and they could find themselves on the outside looking in, even with a 10-6 record.
Things seemed to be going well, until Donald Brown got Mike Scifres killed by totally whiffing on a block on a punt. This offensive line just needs to keep Rivers from constantly being under so much pressure. The Chiefs & 49ers don’t look quite as threatening as they did a few weeks ago, but they are both road games. Ladarius Green looked to be heating up until Brandon Browner took him out with a helmet to helmet hit, which sent Green to the locker room dazed. A win against the Broncos would certainly give the Chargers some breathing room, so we will have to hope the defense plays as well as it did today, and the offense stops sputtering. This offensive line has sustained major injuries, but it is a shell of what it was last season, which was only average.
Philip Rivers can’t go 20 of 33 for 189 yards and only one touchdown, if they want to beat Denver. And head coach Bill Belichick is 51-9 in December with the Patriots.San Diego Chargers 8-4 SU, 6-6 ATSThe San Diego Chargers were down 10 points last week in the fourth quarter but they rallied to win behind quarterback Philip Rivers. Mathews had a few nice runs, but then left the game (yet again) with an injury he sustained after he got a leg whip from a Patriots defender. Unfortunately, this meant that the Chargers were operating out of their own end a lot, and they could not get their offense into a rhythm. Frank Reich, Mike McCoy, Coach Joe D, and Philip Rivers need to figure out a solution fast. It was a great plane ride home, too, unlike the Miami game.”Game TrendsThe Patriots are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 vs.
