Kansas University second baseman Justin Protacio (20) tags out Wichita State’s Erik Harbutz on an attempted steal in the third inning, Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at Eck Stadium in Wichita. Wichita — Too many weeks this season, Kansas University baseball coach Ritch Price had seen an encouraging Big 12 weekend go to waste and his team’s RPI crumble because of a midweek loss. With that in mind — and the season winding down — the KU coach utilized nearly every weapon he had to secure a 7-5 victory over Wichita State on Tuesday at Eck Stadium.
KU used four relievers, including closer Jordan Piche, to extend its season-best winning streak to six games. The victory also gave the Jayhawks a two-game season sweep over in-state foe Wichita State.
Trailing 2-1 entering the fifth, KU broke through for five runs by doing most of the little things they’ve done all season.
Michael Suiter followed with a single to left to tie it, then KU advanced both runners on a double-steal before Tyler Baker’s throw sailed into left field to move Kuntz home and Suiter to third.
After walks to Jordan Dreiling and Dakota Smith, McKay cleared the bases with a three-run triple to the right-center gap, pushing KU’s lead to 6-2. Following his safe head-first slide into third, McKay flipped his right hand into the air to pump up his teammates in the dugout.
The “claw” sign — copied a bit from the Texas Rangers’ hit celebration from a year ago — is usually reserved for clutch doubles, but McKay said he had no issues throwing it up after his first collegiate triple. After allowing a leadoff triple in the eighth, Kahana was helped by his defense, as center fielder Tucker Tharp laid out for a full-extension catch in the left-center gap that otherwise would have gone for extra bases.
With runners on the corners and two outs in the eighth, the KU coach summoned Piche to protect a 7-5 lead.
The KU closer struck out WSU’s Micah Green, then pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his Big 12-leading 10th save. The game was delayed 20 minutes in the top of the seventh after the main breaker for the lights on the field tripped, causing a blackout. KU (31-18 overall, 12-9 Big 12) will play host to Kansas State for a three-game series beginning Friday. I know it's sexier to cover KU football and basketball but seriously, talk about how they have a shot at the conference crown with one series remaining or the excitement building in the club house over the post season tournament.

MANHATTAN – Kansas Wesleyan traveled to Manhattan for a mid-week showdown with the NCAA Division I and Big XII member Kansas State Wildcats in their season finale at Tointon Family Stadium.

The Wildcats scored five runs in the fourth, and three more in the fifth to blow open the game and take a 9-0 lead, eventually winning 14-1 over the Coyotes. Rob Ozga allowed just one hit in one inning for the Coyotes, getting the start on the hill in his final collegiate game.
David Price grabbed the first hit for the Coyotes in the top of the second, singling to left off K-State’s Chance Mitchell.
After a Coyote pitching change, Tenbrink then scored on a ground out to second by Rob Vaughn, and Eddie Vasquez doubled home Cruz.
Back-to-back doubles by Byron Wiley and Drew Biery started off the K-State fifth, and forced another Coyote pitching change, Kyle Kirchner in relief of Trevor Howell. The Coyotes got their lone run of the game off a monster homerun to left by Andrew Gulla with one out in the top of the sixth off Kansas State reliever Trevor Hurley. Travis L’Hommedieu singled to right in the seventh, but any Coyote scoring chances were quickly thwarted as Trevor Howell grounded into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning.
Anthony pitched the seventh and eighth for the Coyotes, giving up five runs on seven hits, and walking one. Tenbrink led off the seventh with a single and scored also with Cruz who walked, on a double by Vaughn. In the eighth, Andrew Giambrone reached on an error by Sanchez, and came around to score on a double by Biery. The Coyotes had six different players get hits in McGriff, Gulla, Anthony, Carroll, Price and L’Hommedieu. Brian Dobyns took the loss for the Coyotes, giving up six runs on six hits, all earned, while walking two. Vasquez had four hits for Kansas State to lead the Wildcats, while three other KSU hitters had three hits apiece, as K-State recorded 18 hits on the evening.
Chase Mitchell took the win for K-State, pitching five innings, giving up only two hits while striking out four and walking two.
Kansas Wesleyan finishes the 2006 campaign with a 17-33 record for first year coach Dave Dawson. Gritty, tough and relentless; interchangeable words that describes a Kansas baseball team that refused to go down without a fight Sunday afternoon in NCAA postseason play. Although the unthinkable didn’t happen, the Jayhawks (35-26) gave Kentucky a run for its money clawing their way back from an 8-0 deficit to pull within two runs of the Wildcats (37-24) at Jim Patterson Stadium. Eldredge made sure to do his part to help the Jayhawks attempt an 8-0 comeback, mashing one over the wall in left field on his final collegiate at bat for the second home run of his career. The round tripper came two innings after Kansas rallied to put up a five-spot in the sixth with a little help from five-consecutive base hits. Had the Jayhawks pitchers been a bit more effective, five runs may have been the difference in the ballgame.

Price gives credit to Kentucky starter freshman Zack Brown (1-1), for holding the Jayhawks scoreless through five frames.
Kansas managed to get the tying run to the plate after a one-out walk by sophomore second baseman Colby Wright, but two quick outs followed to end the game and season for the Jayhawks.
Although the comeback didn’t quite happen like the movies portray, Eldredge hopes the team can use the momentum left by the senior class and continue the growth of the KU program. Kevin Kuntz followed with a well-executed hit-and-run, poking the ball to the spot vacated by WSU shortstop Erik Harbutz when he went to cover second base on the steal. Interestingly, the power outage did not affect the lights on the scoreboard or around the rest of the stadium.
With a week to go in the basketball conference season & the title one-the-line, you would NEVER say that. Kansas State’s big inning was the fourth, as Cris Tapia led off the inning with a homer to right. Back to back walks loaded the bases again for the Wildcats, and Vaughn sacrified to right, scoring Biery, before Eddie Vasquez singled scoring Tenbrink. The Coyotes appeared to be ready to score a couple more runs in the frame as AJ Anthony followed Gulla’s bomb with a double, but Adam Carroll and Carlos Sanchez both struck out to end the inning. Kansas opened the frame with four-straight singles , before sophomore first baseman Jacob Boylan roped a two-run double down the line in left field, all with no outs.
However, the staff combined to give up eight runs off 11 hits including five runs and five hits for right-handed starter Robert Kahana (4-7).
KU didn’t score again until the eighth when the dinger by Eldredge cut the lead to two runs, 8-6, and allowed for the Jayhawks to take one final stab at completing the comeback in the ninth inning. The season IS winding down and most real fans realize the importance of that, as Jesse suggested in the opening paragraph - they can't afford any drop in RPI or they really risk that the end of the regular season could be the end of the season.
Cruz then knocked in his second and third RBI’s of the evening with a bases loaded single.
A sacrifice fly and an RBI ground out later, KU had cut that 8-0 deficit down to just three runs, 8-5. You imply that Jesse - writing his usual excellent stuff - has less regard for KU baseball than for football or basketball. Nothing in this article suggests that - instead it is a good and VERY positive article about a good team that needs all their FEW remaining games to go this well if they are to make it into NCAA play.
