Jim (far left) on the Old Trafford pitch celebrating one of United's many Premier League triumphs. It's a tale of breathtaking success, of excitement stretched to the limit - and of a year when an English club giant of world football achieved a remarkable treble.
For Jim Curran was Manchester United's first team masseur during that famous treble season of 1999 - the highlight of many great moments in a 39-year association with the Reds. And, when he retired, 11 years ago, the senior players whom he had accompanied to many parts of the world, underlined their affection and respect for him by staging a massive farewell dinner at Old Trafford, while sending him and wife Sandra on a dream trip to anywhere of their choice around the globe. Jim's is a wonderful sporting story and where better to start than in Barcelona's Nou Camp stadium, packed with 90,000 fans for the European final of that golden year, 1999.
Indeed, as the game ebbed away, United's official party looked on glumly while match stewards hurried by with the European Champions Trophy bedecked in Bayern Munich's steely grey colours.Trailing 1-0 from the sixth minute to a Marco Basker free kick, it had not been one of the Reds' most inspiring performances. Teddy Sheringham equalised with 90+1 on the clock and, two minutes later, 90+3, fellow substitute Ole Gunnar Solskjaer joyously swept in the winner.
And, suddenly, those same match officials were scurrying away to discard the colours of Bayern and replace them with the red of Manchester United. Sir Alex and Lady Ferguson shared the top table with Jim and Sandra, alongside such United immortals as Martin Buchan and Wilf McGuinness. It was a great send off for a very likeable and dedicated man who once left the FA Cup on a coach from Wembley after United had shared the 1977 Charity Shield with Liverpool! Jim signed for United as a 15-year-old schoolboy goalkeeper in 1963, having played for Manchester, also represented Lancashire and been called up as an England schools' triallist. However, breaking through at Old Trafford in those days was a tough ask with lots of competition and five recognised goalkeepers.
These made a distinguished list - Harry Gregg, Dave Gaskell, Jimmy Rimmer, Ronnie Briggs and John Connaughton.

After leaving Newcastle, he played the odd first team game with Oldham Athletic and Crewe Alexandra. While still playing, Jim used to coach and run a junior team for United - and his skills did not go unnoticed, the club asking him to join as youth coach under then manager Tommy Docherty.
He was to stay for 28 years, occupying various roles including assistant physiopherapist and masseur - the latter a position he held with the senior side for seven years and which took him all over the world, visiting Australia, the Far East, China, Russia, Japan, Brazil and most of Europe."I think I was also general dog's body!" laughed Jim who hadn't been averse to driving the youth team mini bus. Jim, recently recovered from a knee replacement operation, was born in Prestbury, Cheshire, and educated at Clough Top Secondary School, Manchester.
Currently on the mend after a knee replacement operation, Jim, 65, has worked in hospital operating theatres as an instruments' support worker since moving to Stamford. Coaching obviously runs in the family as son, Philip, who was at York University, is now a qualified tennis coach. Jim first became acquainted with Stamford in 1983 when United visited the Daniels for a pre-season friendly.
They also moved to Stamford because this was an excellent half way location between Sandra's jobs as an education consultant with responsibility for school projects in Middlesbrough and London. Away from sport, Jim has a great love of music and is a singer, going under the name of Jim Buchanan.
He appeared at the Palladium and worked on three Benny Hill series, while Ken played the drums at Bernard Manning's Embassy Club in Manchester for 20 years. Jim still sings with organisations such as Sheltered Housing and clubs including Peterborough Conservatives, Blackstones Social and Bourne British Legion. Jim and Sandra with their two dogs, four-year-old sisters Chloe and Zoe who came from the same Sprocker litter. Brooklyn Beckham posted a video of himself, to his millions of Instagram followers, dancing on one and Man Utd’s summer signing Memphis Depay posed with one during a recent photo opp.
More versatile than an electric scooter  and less dangerous than a Swegway, these things take a little getting used to, but once you have they’re a doddle. With a price tag of ?360, you could easily buy yourself a small second hand car, but celebrity endorsements mean this mini mode of transport is quickly taking off.

Endless memories for Jim and Sandra, married for 23 years and now living just a stone's throw from Stamford town centre. Organised by Gary Neville's dad, Neville, it attracted over 900 guests - with more on the waiting list. Says Sir Alex, very much tongue in cheek: "Every time I think of you, I think of that time in Germany, you driving that mini bus and me driving myself up the wall listening to your tapes! He works incredibly hard and gathers people round him with the same mentality. He takes a great interest in all aspects of the club, particularly triallists and always gets to know the name of their parents. Manager at the time was Sir Matt Busby and Jim was a United player during the George Best era.
While with the former, he played in an away FA Cup tie at Grantham Town on their old ground, now a Sainsbury's, near the town centre. His younger sporting days were also shared with cricket, playing as a wicketkeeper with both Lancashire and Manchester Boys and appearing as an England triallist. His father was a skilled taylor's cutter and both parents also worked for Avro, the original Vulcan Bomber production company.
He came to know local builder and former Stamford player, the late Ray Medwell, who had been a valued scout with Manchester United.
His two brothers, Eddie and Ken, both now sadly deceased, shared this passion - Eddie also singing under the name of Buchanan. He has packed a lot into an intriguing career - but I guess there will never be anything quite like that night of destiny in Barcelona. Which, does take a bit of getting used to (the temptation is to push down with the soles of your feet). If you reside in an EU member state besides UK, import VAT on this purchase is not recoverable.
One of those wonderful, unpredictable moments, which flavour sport with such magic, turned this final into an everlasting legend. The whole stand was just bouncing and vibrating," recalled Jim "Thanks partly to a guy sitting next to us with massive feet!" interjected Sandra when we met at their home recently. While following United, Sandra concedes that her first footballing love is home town club, Accrington Stanley.
