A recent article at Addicting Info pointed out that according to FBI released data Tennessee had the highest per capita violent crime rate of any state in 2012. In a previous post, I pulled the data from the FBI and confirmed those numbers, and then did some initial analysis on where those crimes were occurring. At first glance, it appears Memphis is the main culprit in driving up the state’s crime rate.
Next, one notices that Nashville too has a significant amount of crime as the second largest contributor for the state and the second largest metro district.
Lastly, given the results of the first two cases, it seems difficult to say that Nashville and Memphis should be responsible for changing Tennessee’s status in this ranking, so I performed a final sensitivity analysis for the whole state. Below you will find an interactive map showing all the counties of Tennessee with their 2012 Census population data and TBI crime statistics.
As you can see, Tennessee is unlike any of the other states and cities that we investigated so far. White people are a greater share of the population in Tennessee than in Arizona, California, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia.
Immediately, we can see that African-Americans and Hispanics are more likely to be poor than Whites, but this doesn’t explain Tennessee crime statistics. Unfortunately, Tennessee is a Southern state that counts Hispanics as White in crime statistics. Hispanics are 4.6 percent of the Tennessee population, but their effect on violent crime is invisible here, except for artificially inflating the White share of crime. In Tennessee, as in every other state and city we have investigated, we have learned that African-Americans are overrepresented in violent crime, and that White people are underrepresented.
If there is any environmental factor that has a definite impact on violent crime, it is the season of the year, as violent crime rises in the summer and tapers off in the winter, as sure as night follows day. Not only is there a strong connection between race and crime, there is also a connection between crime and sex, crime and age, crime and appearance, crime and season of the year, and crime and education and intelligence. If you took neighborhoods that were 95% of a single ethnicity and had accurate crime stats for the neighborhood over a year, experienced cops from places that had the whole set of ethnicities e.g.
And if you look on the office of  justice programs website you will see that although blacks may outnumber whites in murder crimes (by about 6%) WHITES outnumber BLACKS in crimes involving sex, gangs, workplace, arson, poison, and have multiple victims.
Participation in black churches provides some critical insight into the inner workings, or lack thereof, of the black community.
Nashville, TN – A Tennessee group is looking for information from victims of crime in an bid to improved accommodate their needs.
Once needs and gaps are identified, OCJP can cruise how appropriation could definitely impact a response to victims of crime in communities via Tennessee. OCJP functions as a vital formulation group that secures, distributes, and manages sovereign and state supports for Tennessee, including Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) supports and STOP Violence Against Women Program (STOP) funds.

To residence crime and victimization in Tennessee, OCJP manages a systematic, year-round cycle for last a communities’ needs, identifying a probity system’s problems, environment module priorities, creation extend allocation decisions, handling those saved projects, and evaluating a formula of those decisions.
Crime TrendsIn the course of the most recent 10 years, crime data were available in Tennessee for all 10 years. Please take note that these graphs show reported crime rates and some sudden changes in crime data are the result of changes in reporting, not actual changes in crime rates. You are discouraged against over-analyzing ranking data to decide 'how dangerous' a certain location is, as many factors, including episodic events, or disparities in crime reporting and methodology can skew rankings.
Crime Data InformationTennessee law enforcement agencies report their statistics to the FBI UCR program. The crime rate in Cordova is considerably higher than the national average across all communities in America from the largest to the smallest, although at 26 crimes per one thousand residents, it is not among the communities with the very highest crime rate.
The crime data that NeighborhoodScout used for this analysis are the seven offenses from the uniform crime reports, collected by the FBI from 17,000 local law enforcement agencies, and include both violent and property crimes, combined. Now let us turn to take a look at how Cordova does for violent crimes specifically, and then how it does for property crimes. From our analysis, we discovered that violent crime in Cordova occurs at a rate higher than in most communities of all population sizes in America.
NeighborhoodScout's analysis also reveals that Cordova's rate for property crime is 23 per one thousand population.
However, that hasn’t been enough to get the idea of Tennessee being the most violent state in the country off my mind. It suggested that the state’s overall violent crime rate would need to come down approximately 5.5 percent to get it out of the top spot. We are going to take a look at statewide crime statistics before taking a closer look at crime in Nashville, Memphis, and Knoxville. Thus, we are unable to see the Hispanic effect on violent crime in the same way that we can in California and Arizona. For a quick moment I was thinking about retirng to Tennessee but if this is an indication of the ignorant mentality of the people there…I am so glad that I found out prior to wasting my hard-earned money and time researching further.
What’s even more troubling is that they are also responsible for a vast majority of violent crimes. The state has combined an online consult that officials wish crime victims will respond to. OCJP uses a structured routine to demeanour 3 to 5 years forward of daily extend government activities during a changing needs of Tennessee’s probity complement and a needs of a victims of aroused crime.
You can look through the breakdown of crime by type, changes to crime data over time, and see how Tennessee compares to similar locations.
When NeighborhoodScout compared Cordova with other communities its size, we found that the crime rate was near the average for all other communities of similar size.

This is important because the overall crime rate can be further illuminated by understanding if violent crime or property crimes (or both) are the major contributors to the general rate of crime in Cordova. However, in making comparisons of Tennessee’s data between 2010 and 2012, it does appear that there is a fair amount of variability, so perhaps not all hope is lost. As men grow older, they are less likely to become criminals, no matter what their socioeconomic status. If you are interested in seeing public records information for Tennessee, you can click the Public Records tab at the top.Total CrimeBetween 1999 and 2008 there were 2,902,808 total crimes reported in Tennessee (425,960 of them violent). So, whether Cordova's crime rate is high or low compared to all places in the US, when we control for population size and compare it to places that are similar in size, it is near the middle of the pack in crime rate; not much more or less dangerous, and about what we would expect from the statistics. Under this scenario, Tennessee would start to approach Nevada (and out of first place) with an approximate 10 percent reduction of the crime rates in these two cities.
The comparisons made herein are thus, only meaningful upon further examination of all variables that affect crime in each reported city, state or other reported jurisdicition. Of the 290,281 crimes that take place per year in Tennessee, close to 50% transpire less than one mile from home. By and large, the crime data indicate a general rise in crime over the last 10 years in Tennessee. Relative to Tennessee, Cordova has a crime rate that is higher than 63% of the state's cities and towns of all sizes.
If the current trend continues, predicted crime numbers could hit at least three hundred and seven thousand for Tennessee in 2009. A bad year, especially with a few terrible incidences like the quadruple homicide that occurred in Cumberland County earlier this year, could drive Tennessee well out of everyone else’s reach.
They commit more sex-related crimes, gang related crimes, and are more likely to kill at their places of employment. What is clear, though, is that not enough people are talking about the crime plaguing the white community. Maybe it’s time for me and Tennessee to admit it has violent crime problem and start the conversation of how to address it.
Driving while drunk is almost exclusively a white crime because everyone knows black people prefer to drink on their porches or inside their homes.
