The Baltimore City Fraternal Order of Police said on Thursday that Baltimore’s recent rise in crime is linked to fear among police officers that they will be arrested for doing their jobs. The decision to lambast organized religion drew criticism from both church representatives and politicians in France and beyond even before the issue was released. Moreover, it’s not completely clear that it was wrongful, or even negligent, for Baltimore Police officers to continue to transport a prisoner simply because he complains of pain, problems of breathing, etc. The Baltimore Police will probably put on experts who will testify that such complaints are all too frequent, and usually false or at least exaggerated, so that a fixed rule requiring that transport vehicles always be halted in such cases would result in enormous wastes of time and much less efficient policing.  It may also be true that it is better to continue to transport the prisoner to the booking station, since the medical treatment available there may be better than in any ambulance which might be called if the transport vehicle is stopped in the street.
A surge in violence against Latinos in Baltimore, Maryland, prompted Latino activists, clergy and civil rights leaders Tuesday to call on city officials to implement a written policy barring police from asking the immigration status of those who call for help. In Pittsburgh, the police chief recently declared that officers would no longer check immigration papers, according to news reports. The police say that Gray had knife, a spring-loaded switchblade, which they say is against the law.
The police will turn over their findings in the Gray case to the state this Friday (May 1st).

About the series: As The Baltimore Sun commemorates its 175th anniversary, we revisit the subjects of our most iconic photographs, describing where their lives have led them since their moments in The Sun. Police Officer Raymond Cook arrests 16-year-old Lance Tate on an armed carjacking charge at the corner of Edmondson Avenue and Allendale Street on June 6, 1997.
The photo — taken June 6, 1997, by a Baltimore Sun photographer about a month before Lance was slain — captured a split-second expression of the violence that consumed the city in the 1990s. Meanwhile, Tate, a nurse technician, still lives in her Southwest Baltimore home, just a few blocks from where her son was killed. Several weeks after Lance’s death, Chung, the photgrapher, was at police headquarters with a reporter who was interviewing homicide detectives.
ABOUT THE DARKROOMThe Darkroom, the photography and video blog of The Baltimore Sun, shines a light on visually captivating stories of our past and present. Bealefeld responded that a written policy was unnecessary in Baltimore because officers do not ask about immigration status.  Instead city officials reassured residents to trust police to focus on fighting violent crime, not enforcing immigration laws. On Saturday April 25th, police and protesters faced off in the centre of Baltimore for all the world to see.

He compared the protests to a “lynching”, saying that police officers have constitutional rights, like the right to due process.
It shows her teenage son sprawled on a city sidewalk, head bent upward, his startled expression staring into the muzzle of a semiautomatic handgun pointed at his chest by Baltimore Officer Raymond Cook, who was trying to arrest him on an armed carjacking charge. She came down to find that police had surrounded her brick rowhome and were arresting Lance on the front porch.
He and a reporter were riding with police for an unrelated story, when they happend upon the arrest.
