Luckily, city slickers can empower themselves with fundamental survival skills by taking courses from one of the many wilderness schools around the country. When I arrived, a handful of students were gathered around instructor Tim MacWelch as he went over the basics of survival and the importance of having a positive mentality in difficult situations. Water is at the top of the list of priorities for survival, but unfiltered water from most surface sources contains potentially harmful pathogens like Giardia. Tim’s point about the importance of having a positive attitude at the beginning of class came into play when it was time to practice building a fire. Since leaving the army, Dave has trained and now teaches wilderness survival at his Pathfinder Training School in Southeast Ohio.
The hands on classes can be taken in conjunction with the online courses putting your practical skills to the test.
Pathfinder School has a strong online community in which you can discuss survival skills and interact with the instructors and other survival enthusiast on the forums on their website. Whether you are looking to casually learn some survival skills at your own pace or want to dive right in and get your hands dirty, the Pathfinder School has something for everybody at all levels.

I am interested in joining your hands on class to teach me the skills needed to survive in the wilderness if needed.
I signed up for Earth Connection’s “Primitive Survival Crash Course” in rural Virginia and showed up a few weeks later in barely used hiking boots and ratty Dockers to see if I could learn to feel more “at home” in the outdoors. I was quickly struck by Tim’s geniality, humor, and his almost encyclopedic knowledge of nature, history and wilderness medicine. The youngest student found a little ring neck snake and wolf spider and carried them around on his arms while the class took target practice at a stuffed squirrel Tim had dubbed “Rocky II”.
After my drill popped off the bow for the umpteenth time, my inner voice said simply “you can’t do this.” I was burning up all my calories, which would be a problem were I actually lost in the wilderness. Canterbury is a professional hunting guide and tracker that has posted over 300 survival-themed instructional videos online.
The Virtual Classroom on their site is described as “an opportunity to either jump start the learning process or give additional research for the Phase 1 E-Course. They also have an online store that carries all types of survival gear that is personally chosen by Dave Canterbury for its usability and quality.

The Virtual Classroom, E-courses and hands on training, gives you the flexibility to learn what you, when you want, at the price you want! Would you please send me the info needed to be able to join both the online and the hands on class. The class watched spellbound as he carefully placed the ember in a nest of dry plant material and blew gently on it for several seconds until the nest caught fire. I made a mental note that ignoring the “I can’t” voice might be useful not just in survival situations, but life in general.
