Understanding the basics of a human’s need to survive (& thrive) are key in being able to stay alive and well in the outdoors.
Suitable for: Corporate team building, school groups, cadets and scouts, outdoor enthusiasts, associations and more! Outdoor Survival Skills course is a fun, informative and hands-on, and can be adjusted and catered to all age groups and end-users.
I loved the scenarios that we were placed in throughout the course, it made me think outside of the box and taught me how to react-it was a great introduction to first-aid and even better introduction to wilderness first-aid. A very good location for this course because it was private and remote.  The instructor used the location fully and was effective in time management and presentation. This overview of a typical Victoria Falls itinerary provides an insight into what you can expect from a Bear Grylls Survival Academy. The adventure begins at 14:00 when you are picked up from Victoria Falls Airport by your course representatives.
Due to the limited flights in and out of Victoria Falls, we will accommodate you at Nakavango Conservation Centre for this evening. As you would expect, the Bear Grylls Survival Academy is challenging both mentally and physically.
If you have any questions about Health and Fitness for the course, please contact our BGSA team.
This course is strictly limited to just 10 participants and costs just ?1,299 excluding flights. Outdoor Vancouver brings the latest news, events, hiking guides and gear reviews to outdoor enthusiasts and endurance athletes.
You will spend one evening learning about pre-trip planning, hazard recognition and avoidance, emergency kits, survival psychology and navigation skills. Courses like this are something that become invaluable in the event that you ever get stuck in the backcountry.

Yeah, this course might be a good idea, especially if you’re coming from a different environment. I was hooked after the Basic WRFA Course, and I enjoyed the Advanced Course every bit as much.
Set in one of our most challenging environments at Victoria Falls, this course culminates in a 36 hour expedition, putting skills such as tracking, skinning and crossing the ultimate in difficult terrain to the test. However, every course is different depending on the location, weather and the groups ability, and so, this is just a guide! Introductions done and after meeting your fellow participants, it’s time to head off to The Nakavango Conservation Centre by Land Rover, where you will be issued with your specialist survival kit and have your personal kit checked to ensure it’s suitable for the extreme challenge that lies ahead. After a dynamic early morning lesson in situational survival and self preservation BG style, it’s time for a big breakfast to help prepare you for the day ahead. Of course this type of holiday is perfect if you want to chill out, relax and do very little for a week or two, but if you want to explore the local scenery, step off the beaten track, and generally discover places other tourists are too lazy to see, booking a 4X4 tour could be a fantastic way of seeing just a bit more than you usually would. An overnight field session will allow you to truly experience a night out in the local mountains with minimum survival gear. But even if you never use the skills in a survival situation, you’ll learn things that make hiking more enjoyable.
Beyond hiking, Karl likes to get into the outdoors by kayaking, cycling, scuba diving, snowboarding, and most frequently, trail running.
All meals and accommodation are included and a large amount of equipment is on loan for the duration of the course including: Knife, mug, sleeping bag and liner, sleeping mat, rucksack and liner, head torch, water bottle and all technical safety equipment. I’ll likely be signing up for the winter camping version of this course down the road. Each instructor is an expert in their chosen field of African Bush craft, Wilderness Survival or Extreme Adventurous Activity.
On arrival you will receive a safety brief, course brief and outline of the next five days.

If you make the helicopter pick up, what a ride back to civilization we have for you as we take you on a low level fast journey through the Zambezi gorge and up and out over Victoria Falls. These kinds of scenarios are the basis for wilderness training courses held all over the world.
I did ask the search and rescue person if the course was a bit Mickey Mouse for him since he had so much experience, and he said not at all, that there is always an opportunity to learn new things or new ways to do things. After camp admin has been explained and your camp equipment and basic African food rations have been issued, you will receive the first of many survival talks. If you are successful then we have the final passing out parade and awarding of the BG Survival Academy certificates and knives as well as drinks and medals…. On completion of the course you will receive the coveted Bear Grylls Survival Academy badge and certificate, and your very own Bear Grylls Ultimate knife.
Course providers are teaching students how to survive under some of the most extreme conditions. Lesson one is Bear’s ‘Priorities of Survival’, followed by a lesson in survival knife skills. After you’ve learnt how to build your survival shelters, learn the art of making and setting traps, drop lines and importantly making and lighting fires by various means which will hopefully keep anything hostile away from your overnight camp. After supper you receive a talk on Astro Navigation and after a night tracking and navigation exercise settle down by the fire for a survival bedtime story.
