Art’s success has given me the confidence to build two of my own raised beds this weekend. Use your third 2×2 board in the bottom middle of the bed and drill screws to make it secure on both sides of the bed. Now position the bottom short leg pieces just below the crossbar, and screw into place.  Assemble the legs sections for the other side of the bed in the exact same way. With two beds, we’ll have about 24 square feet of planting space.  Not too bad for condo living! This post is part of a series called Roof Garden Rookies, which explores my attempt, as an amateur gardener, to grow a garden on the rooftop of my building in lower Manhattan.
Our plan was to build fifteen beds, six large planters at 6 ft x 2 ft, three smaller planters at 4 ft x 2 ft, and six even smaller planters, which ended up being window boxes at 8″ x 5 ft. I want to start a garden this spring and this is really great for a planter idea if you just build it up more.
For the bases of the beds, we were fortunate to have kept slats from our roof deck in a woodpile in the backyard.
Essential to this process is creating drainage in the bottom of the bed so that heavy rains can easily find their way out of the planters. But since weight was an issue for our beds on the roof, Kerry Trueman, expert from Retrovore who has been helping us on all aspects of the garden, suggested using packing peanuts.
The weather here was absolutely gorgeous, so I took the opportunity to work on a project outside–building an elevated garden table. Have gardened in raised garden boxes, plus a huge homemade greenhouse that I designed for 32 years.
We started by placing screens over the widely spaced bottom slats (also notice the metal mending brackets, used to prevent bowing), and then filling the beds with drainage material: packing peanuts. These table gardens can be made to any size, and are perfect for people who live in apartments or condos, or who people who have a tiny back yard with no space for an in-ground garden.
He has become disabled and can’t bend over to reach the ground or lean forward from a sitting position, but he loves to garden as it reminds him of childhood with his great-grandmother.
As these are really deep and off the ground, I used large rocks from a former rock garden to fill in the bottom before filling with "Mels mix" organic compost, vermiculite and peat moss.
