It is interesting to think that the lizard which minds its business and copulates energetically becomes a part of our existence. And, its not only the lizard which in a way creates familiarity, there are many trees, birds and insects which also make home for us.
GenusHemidactylus (1)A relatively large lizard, the yellow-bellied house gecko (Hemidactylus flaviviridis) is an unusual species which demonstrates distinct variation in body colour depending on the time of day. Yellow-bellied house gecko biologyActive at night, the yellow-bellied house gecko feeds primarily on insects which congregate around sources of light, aided by its extraordinary capability to climb vertical walls and walk on ceilings. Depending on location, the yellow-bellied house gecko usually mates during March and April, following a brief courtship period. Yellow-bellied house gecko habitatThe yellow-bellied house gecko is particularly associated with man-made structures such as houses, warehouse complexes, hospitals and schools (3), where it is commonly observed on walls and ceilings (2) (9) (10). Yellow-bellied house gecko conservationThere are no known conservation measures in place for the yellow-bellied house gecko. I see many baby lizards while gazing at the walls to take a break when I am marking papers.
When the lizard is about to catch its prey, many times, a hapless fly or insect, it slowly follows the movements of the insect and at a moment when the insect is caught unawares, the lizard leaps and catches its prey.

At night, the yellow-bellied house gecko is typically greyish, olive or brown, patterned with indistinct bands on the back and yellowish on the underside; however, when seen during the day, the gecko is usually much darker in colour, with contrasting, chevron-shaped bands on the body (3) (4) (5). In his travelogue, From Heaven Lake: Travels through Sinkiang and Tibet, Seth mentions how he misses the familiar lizard on the walls while he travels through Tibet and China. Observing its actions and antics, I find that even humans behave in a similar fashion except that the lizard can grow its tail again unlike man whose body parts except one or two, does not regenerate. The yellow-bellied house gecko is covered in small, keeled scales and the head and body are flattened, while the tail is fat and swollen at the base, with enlarged tubercles (wart-like bumps and ridges) along the upper side (5) (6) (7). Sprinkler systems will deliver enough water to keep any lizard happy and this leads to many taking up residence along outside foundation walls.
Next you should set out some repellent granules or repellent spray and lastly, consider setting out lizard traps if they're inside the home. This gives the yellow-bellied house gecko an enormous surface area in relation to its body size, enabling it to grip all kinds of surfaces (5) (7) (10). House Spiders tend to build their webs in humid, undisturbed areas such as garages, barns and warehouses, usually in upper corners or under furniture.
These lizards which without invitation share living space with us have almost become something of an extension of our lived reality.

The pupils contract to vertical slits during the day to protect the retina (the light-sensitive part of the eye) from harsh sunlight, while the eyelids of the yellow-bellied house gecko are fused to form a transparent cover, called a spectacle, for additional protection. These same plants can become a target for lizards that will find them to be a great source of water during dry spells or in arid regions when water is sparse. I sensed that I missed something in my living space and after a great deal of thinking realised that I missed the click-click sound of the lizards. In Tamil Nadu, if we are speaking of something and the lizard makes its clicking sound, it is believed that the lizard has answered our question.
So, whenever we talk about something and the lizard makes its sound, we exclaim, "See, see, even the lizard thinks so." Sadly, in Belfast there was no lizard to affirm our talks.
