To help keep this clean edge defined throughout the year we can use timber, paver, metal, or Permalock ProSlide edging along planting beds, driveways, etc. This 4x4 inch timber is useful when installed properly to keep the stone from moving into your lawn. Deep curved lines that clearly define your landscape beds and lawn tie your garden to your home and create a crisp, clean look. Landscape timber driveway borders can deter unwanted traffic from crossing onto grass and flower beds. Driveways need some form of edging to define the border, especially if you have a plain asphalt, concrete or gravel driveway. 1Measure the landscape timber height and the height of the driveway surface from the ground. 2Cut a trench along the driveway at the depth required to expose the desired landscape timber height and about 2 inches wider than the landscape timbers. 4Drill half-inch diameter pilot holes about 4 inches from each end of each landscape timber. 5Lay the landscape timbers in the trench; use a rubber mallet to tap the ends of the timbers tight together.

6Set a level on top of the landscape timbers and adjust the soil in the trench, as needed, to make the landscape timber level. 7Pound 12-inch long, half-inch diameter steel spikes through the pilot holes and into the ground with a sledge hammer to anchor the timbers in position. 8Place a second course of landscape timbers directly on top of the first course of timbers, staggering the joints so the ends of the timbers don't line up. You don't have to anchor the timbers in the ground, but the stakes help hold the timbers in place in the event of frost upheaval or if a car strikes the timber border. A former cake decorator and competitive horticulturist, Amelia Allonsy is most at home in the kitchen or with her hands in the dirt. Landscape timbers, long pieces of square or rounded lumber, work well as a border for straight driveways.
Use this measurements to determine the depth of trench needed depending on the amount of landscape timber you would like to leave exposed above ground. Use a half-moon edger to cut a straight line along the driveway, then dig out the soil with a spade. Cut landscape timbers with a circular saw if partial lengths are needed to fit in the trench.

Drive the spikes deep enough so the end of the spike is flush with the top of the landscape timbers. In order to avoid rapid decay, always choose pressure-treated landscape timbers or timbers made from rot-resistant wood such as cedar.
For example, if you have 4-by-4-inch timbers, the driveway sticks up 1 inch and you want the timbers installed 1 inch above the driveway height, then you need a 2-inch deep trench beside the driveway.
Place the timbers on top of the first course and insert a pen to mark the location for pilot holes on the first course of timbers so you can pound a steel spike through both courses of timbers. You can border the driveway with a single course of landscape timbers or stack multiple timbers to create a short wall border.
Use the timbers to separate the driveway from the lawn or to border the driveway and a flower bed.
