In order to push the wall back away from the cottage, we dug out more than we absolutely had to.
In order to make sure the whole wall doesn’t slide down the slope, we put a few rebar pins in. Although the purpose of the wall is to redirect water into the woods, we didn’t want water building up behind the wall, putting pressure on it.
As we neared the final height, it helped tremendously to put a strong up to show me how high we needed to go. This entry was posted in retaining walls and tagged cabin in the woods, cottage, old cabin, retaining wall, stone retaining wall, stone wall on July 24, 2013 by nancysv.
What didn’t happen today was painting.  We had it all planned out – some of us would work on the wall while others painted.

Our plan was to build a retaining wall in front of the cottage and divert the water around to the side and into the woods.

At this point, our plan is to build a retaining wall from the level of the cottage up to the edge of the embankment. So far, he has spoken with four people who know how to build rock walls and done hours of research on the internet. He has a point in that the consequences of not doing this right are huge – if the wall fails, the entire holding tank could, theoretically, go tumbling down the hill into the marsh. After so many weeks of talking retaining walls, it feels great to actually get a few base rocks cemented into position. We will put a drainage pipe behind it to divert water around the edge of the cottage and into the woods.
One of the first things done was to clear the poison ivy out of a tree that needed to come down. Davy and Daryl stood by to go get another 80-pound bag of cement when we needed it, and John was right there to slice open the bag and dump the contents into the bin. We had hoped to get this wall built while they are here, but it looks like the tools will get here the day the gang leaves.
