The Peace Park Community Garden in North Philadelphia completed its second year of growing this fall. KGI is a nonprofit community of over 30,000 people who are growing some of our own food and helping others to do the same. The garden is located in an impoverished neighborhood that is also a food desert; an area with recent school closings due to a lack of resources, where abandoned homes crumble and sprawling vacant lots sit idle and overgrown.
Through this hard work, we have converted a vacant lot filled with bricks into a space for community exchange.

From the outset, our project was premised on trying to help fill this void through community building. The vegetables grown at the garden over the last two years have been sent home with the children and volunteers, and we are also happy to supply older community members from across the street with produce when they come over to say hi. The Peace Park Community Garden was formed by a coalition of community members, garden activists, and neighborhood children. Aside from growing food in a sustainable manner, much of our work at the Peace Park has centered on teaching children from the surrounding neighborhood the basics of gardening in an environment that is fun and relaxed, yet encourages good work ethic.

This coming year we are re-designing our garden layout, planning to build a native grasses meadow at both ends of the plot, and are as excited as ever for this coming spring.
