Alter recipes whenever possible to replace unhealthy fats with healthy fats like olive, canola or peanut oil. This post may seem like more of a public service announcement for the American Diabetes Association. Leading up to American Diabetes Awareness Month in November (which includes World Diabetes Day on Nov. People can answer that question through a video submission, in a contest that the ADA is promoting online. Aside from this video contest, people are also encouraged to join this "movement" in other ways, such as giving, volunteering, learning, and advocating. However, I'm a little bothered by this message overall to "Stop Diabetes." To me, it seems to imply that we can just "flick a switch" and somehow stop diabetes.
I want to cure diabetes, which is something that the JDRF is obviously the leading organization on that front. Ditto!I guess at this stage of the game Mike I am happy to unite with other type 1's to educate and advocate. I knew D was a sign of the coming of our robot overlords!!Seriously tho, simply by the title, the program seems to be directed at type 2. America might think of itself as a nation of beef eaters, but for the first time in over a century, Americans are eating more chicken than beef, Priceonomics reports.
Beef consumption has been declining for the past decade, as consumers become more health conscious and choose leaner meats and vegetarian options. Autoimmune diseases are a type of condition in which the body’s immune system begins to attack and terminate healthy cells and tissues within the body.
Many autoimmune diseases affect the skin: noticeably changing coloring, moisture and photosensitivity.
The direct causes of vitiligo are still predominantly unknown but there are several dominant theories as to what the causes might be.
SLE appears in people of varied ages but seems to more often affect those age 10-50 (Source: MedlinePlus). Some type of porphyria are known to cause extreme sensitivity to sun exposure, causing lesions and blistering. While porphyrias are not considered to be autoimmune diseases, there is a very strong similarity between them. As haemoglobin creates the red pigment in red blood cells, a lack of heme tends to cause moderate to extreme sensitivity to sunlight.
OncoSec's investigational drug and device products have not been approved or cleared by the FDA. Apparently, more than 600,000 people have joined this movement (as reported by the latest ADA figures) and the ADA is very focused on letting people know the organization is the largest national movement to Stop Diabetes.
To me, that's what World Diabetes Day does for me - it bridges a gap that the two leading groups aren't willing to bridge at this point. I just want everyone to work together in that mission and advocating for the best possible way we can all Live With Diabetes successfully short of it no longer existing.

I'm very proud of the diabetes journalism work there, so make sure to go check out that "diabetes newspaper with a personal twist." Meanwhile, it's fun keeping tabs on my personal life adventures here at The Corner Booth.

Red meat has been linked to heart disease and diabetes, and people perceive chicken, a white meat, to be a healthier option. In a properly functioning immune system, white blood cells protect the body from foreign agents such as bacteria and viruses, through producing antibodies to locate and destroy them.
It is a condition that directly affects the melanocytes: cells that create pigments and color in the skin.
In the United States, it is estimated that between 1 and 2 million people currently have vitiligo: half of whom develop it before the age of 20. In the diagnosis of vitiligo, important factors include rashes, skin trauma and any sunburns around the areas of the body where the bleached signs have occurred. African Americans and Asians seem to also be more predisposed, while women  have a higher tendency to develop SLE than men. Even small doses of sunlight can cause scaly areas to appear on the skin that may form lesions that have a tendency to scar-over.
There is a chance that they will be reclassified as autoimmune diseases, at some point in time. Some severe types of porphyria require the patient to avoid as much contact with sunlight as possible, as the skin can become visibly cracked, damaged and scarred, in a very short period of time.
Once the video submissions are complete, the public will be able to vote for the most compelling video. Most recently, Rite Aid has joined this campaign and is offering incentives for people to take Diabetes Risk Tests, distributing D-guides at every pharmacy counter, and hosting more than 1,200 free D-clinics during November. I commend the ADA for wanting to raise more awareness overall about diabetes, and some of the materials it offers online do encourage that and even touch on Type 1 - something that many long-time Adult Type 1s see as a shortcoming of the ADA.
Really, it taps into that ongoing longtime feeling by so many that the ADA is just T2 focused, that it refuses to weave Type 1 into its larger advocacy marketing. They both have their bottom lines and goals, and the overall elimination of diabetes of any type isn't their focus - it's "stopping" or "curing" it and then claiming their mission has been met. However, in autoimmune disease patients, the body is unable to differentiate between healthy cells and attacking viral or bacterial agents. Medical Encyclopedia puts it, “the underlying cause of autoimmune diseases is not fully known.” In fact, the causes of many skin-related conditions are still relatively unknown, as well. This pigmentation disorder destroys the melanocytes: creating bleached looking white patches on the skin – on any part of the body – while also showing up on mucous membranes (including the inside of the mouth and nose), as well as the retina.
While the disorder is more noticeable on people with darker skin tones, it affects all races – and both sexes – at an equal rate.
While some individuals have reported that a particularly bad sunburn caused their vitiligo, there is currently no evidence that sunburns can cause the condition (Source: National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases).
While the underlying natural cause is unknown, another variation of the condition – drug-induced lupus erythematosus – can result from a hypersensitive reaction to certain medications and carries very similar symptoms.
These scarred areas have shown an increased risk of developing skin cancers such as melanoma and carcinoma. While there are a number of different porphyria types, common symptoms range from muscle pain and weakness, personality changes and mental disorders to extreme photosensitivity, paralysis and hazardous respiratory problems. Most patients are already evaluated for autoimmune conditions, during diagnosis and throughout their lives, when living with any type of porphyria. In the end, the top 3 finalists will receive an Apple iPad and the winner will be a part of a Stop Diabetes public service announcement.

We had a great conversation with group leadership earlier this year in Orlando, and some of what they said was encouraging - though we shall see what comes from all of that. Whatever inspires and maybe makes someone else aware of what they can do, or what they might need to know. We’ve taken a look at one autoimmune disorder, as well as two skin-related disorders associated with autoimmune and genetic dysfunctions, in order to examine what part sun exposure plays in the development of their symptoms. It is more common in people with autoimmune diseases but the reason for the connection is still unclear. However, many treatment options for vitiligo can greatly increase the skin’s sensitivity for sunburns; in turn increasing the risk of skin-based cancers like malignant melanoma and Merkel cell carcinoma. Nearly every SLE patient experiences swelling and joint pain and some develop additional arthritis – especially in the hands, wrists, fingers, and knees. Diagnosis for lupus requires a physical exam in which the concerned individual must exhibit 4 out of 11 typical symptoms, in order to be sure they have lupus. Symptoms can vary wildly from person to person and can also flare up instantly, during acute attacks.
As a genetic deficiency, porphyrias are highly hereditary, to the point where it is highly advisable that people with any type of the condition (or a family history of it) consult with a genetic specialist, before attempting to have children.
In fact, the aversions to sunlight caused by some porphyria cases have brought some people to speculate about its relation to myths about vampires. I commend our fellow D-blogger and social media guru Dayle Kern for working with the ADA on this front and being a part of the solution.
I want there to be a huge focus on a cure and yet the reality is we need that AND we need a huge focus on educating the public and helping them change their lifestyles. Family history may also greatly increase the chances of a child developing vitiligo, as 30% of people with the condition have a family member who also shares the same disease. Depigmentation itself will bring with it some photosensitivity and broad spectrum sunscreen (that which provides protection against both UVA and UVB light) is highly recommended.
Symptoms may also include chest pains, fatigue, hair loss, nervous system disorders, and breathing problems, along with skin rashes and photosensitivity. Most patients are advised to wear protective clothing, sunglasses and broad-spectrum sunscreen, when coming in contact with the sun, as it can cause lasting damage and a severe increase in symptoms. This isn’t an effective treatment for this disorder: patients instead must make a very conscious effort to avoid certain medications and lifestyle choices. But in looking at this campaign, my natural feelings of Type 1 getting the short end of a stick come to mind. This condition tends to greatly alter the patient’s skin and can cause various sores and lesions.
So much of this seems as though it's just the ADA trying to boost its numbers and membership and not truly embracing what it professes to embrace. We try to give them the benefit of the doubt and move on, hoping for something we aren't expecting.
