At the University of South Florida, we are primarily focused on the treatment, prevention, and eventual cure of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). Each of the above directed focus areas are investigated by the Pediatric Epidemiology Center, Morsani Diabetes Center, and the Department of Cell Biology, Microbiology and Molecular Biology. The USF Diabetes Center is located on the 5th floor of The Morsani Center for Advanced Healthcare on 13330 Laurel Dr.
Individuals with type 1 diabetes produce little or no insulin, a hormone essential for converting starches and sugars in food into energy in the body. Type 1 diabetes occurs after an immune reaction in the body mistakenly destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Once diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, it is essential to establish an effective treatment plan right away.
If left untreated, type 1 diabetes increases the risk of heart disease as well as damage to the kidneys and eyes. Sometimes, when you’re stuck and spinning your wheels without making much forward progress, putting it in reverse can get you going. This action is similar to many other attempts to cure type 1 diabetes that replace insulin-producing beta cells. When the muscle cells begin producing pro-insulin, the cells of the immune system are tricked into thinking pro-insulin is a normal protein, not a foreign invader. This method differs sharply from using immunosuppressant drugs to combat the body’s immune response to what it sees as an invader that may cause harm.
This rigorous immunosuppression regime for islet cell transplant subjects, however, has been found to actually harm the very delicate islet cells. The “reverse” in the “reverse vaccine” means that the DNA plasmid drug is shutting off a targeted immune response to keep cells alive.
Whether the “reverse vaccine” will ultimately result in a cure is unknown at this time, Steinman says.
Because insulin levels are notoriously difficult to accurately measure and track in blood, the trial for the “reverse vaccine” instead tracked subjects’ C-peptide levels.
Commenting on the study in the June 2013 issue of Inside Stanford Medicine, Richard Insel, MD, chief scientific officer of the JDRF—also known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation—said, “Individuals with preserved C-peptide are at lower risk of long-term eye, kidney and nerve complications. Even minimal maintenance of insulin production, indicated by C-peptide levels, could be very beneficial over the long term in preventing the complications of type 1 diabetes. Steinman adds that so far the safety signals from the trial are good, meaning there are no serious side effects.
The next step in the process, he says, is to conduct a more expansive clinical trial on more subjects over a longer period of time– an effort for which he and other researchers are seeking funding.
I wonder how I can become one of the people they use to test this… I would totally do it! I’m absolutely interested in volunteering to be a part of this trial, some information on who to contact would be great! The Diabetes Media Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit media organization devoted to informing, educating, and generating community around living a healthy life with diabetes.
T1DM develops when the immune system specifically eliminates pancreatic beta cells, the only cells that produce the hormone insulin necessary for the regulation of blood sugar. T1DM is the most common metabolic disease of childhood, with a yearly incidence of 15 cases per 100,000 people younger than 18 years. Suite 100 on the Tampa Bay campus and is comprised of a diverse team with expertise in biostatistics, epidemiology, health informatics, computer science, genetics, nutrition, public health, clinical trials, and health services research. This reaction prevents the body from producing adequate amounts of insulin, to enable glucose to enter cells in the body to produce energy. Individuals may experience unusual thirst, especially for sweet, cold drinks, frequent urination (in children, recurrent bed-wetting may be a common occurrence), sudden weight loss, extreme hunger, extreme fatigue, blurred vision or other changes in eyesight and unconsciousness.
There are several ways to diagnose type 1 diabetes, but currently the best detection tool is a blood test called Glycated hemoglobin (A1C), which indicates average blood sugar (glucose) levels over a three-month period of time.
The risk of bacterial and fungal infections is also increased and individuals with untreated type 1 may experience lower than normal bone density, an early sign of osteoporosis.

The first step involves using a plasmid, which is a circular strand of artificial DNA, as a drug to encode “pro-insulin,” which is a nonfunctioning precursor to insulin. Many of these attempts have stalled, however, not because the beta cells are faulty, but because the body’s immune system aggressively attacks and eliminates the newly introduced cells producing the insulin.
This process, called “tolerization,” ideally results in immune cells learning that insulin is a good, “self” protein, even when encountered around beta cells. In islet cell transplantation, for instance, insulin-producing islet cells from a cadaver are transplanted into a type 1 diabetic’s liver to make insulin in much the same way the islet cells in the pancreas once did.
Instead of using this shotgun approach that suppresses wide swaths of the immune system, the “reverse vaccine” takes a rifle shot to suppress only the specific immune response that affects the beta cells. Other vaccines, such as the flu vaccine, seek to boost the immune response to, in this case, influenza, thereby eliminating it. But, results from the clinical trial already indicate benefits for helping type 1 diabetics better control their condition.
C-peptides are an indicator of insulin production, and, according to some studies, may play a role in mitigating diabetic complications, such as blindness and kidney disease. To survive, people with type 1 diabetes must have insulin delivered by injection or a pump.  This is a devastating and complex disease that has yet to be completely characterized.
With strong funding from the NIH, DoD, and other sources, this center provides the technical means to facilitate interaction and contributions in knowledge between physicians and patients nationally and internationally.
There are various natural remedies for diabetes that will help you control your blood sugar level. Bitter GourdBitter gourd, also known as bitter melon, can be helpful for controlling diabetes due to its blood glucose lowering effects.
Type 1 diabetes, previously known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, is a progressive autoimmune (the body’s system for protecting itself from viruses and bacteria) disease that is most often diagnosed in people under the age of 30. There is currently no cure for this condition, and if left untreated, type 1 diabetes can result in disabling and life-threatening complications. The exact cause of type 1 is unknown, but research suggests that both genetic predisposition and environmental factors play a role in its development. A physician may prescribe a mixture of insulin types to use throughout the day, depending on individual needs.
Thus, the DNA plasmid encoding pro-insulin in muscle cells helps to shut off the body’s specific immune response and the invasion of the new beta cells. Rather than having the specific immune response shut off so that the islet cells may survive, recipients of such transplants take broad range immunosuppressants to keep the body’s immune system from attacking the new cells, much like recipients of full-blown organ transplants.
It tends to influence the glucose metabolism all over your body rather than a particular organ or tissue. It helps increase pancreatic insulin secretion and prevents insulin resistance.
Black Plum or Indian Black Berry (Jambul)Black plum or jambul, also known as jamun can help a lot in controlling blood sugar level because it contains anthocyanins, ellagic acid, hydrolysable tannins etc. Each part of the Jambul plant such as the leaves, berry and seeds can be used by those suffering from diabetes. Unlike beta cells, however, muscle cells are unable to convert pro-insulin into functional insulin peptides. The body’s immune system is thwarted in its attack of the beta cells, and beta cells are left intact and healthy to produce insulin.
This process can be done using a fine needled syringe, a pre-filled insulin pen or an insulin pump. However, it cannot be used to entirely replace insulin treatment.Drink some bitter gourd juice on an empty stomach each morning. Else you can make a powder of dried seeds of Jambul fruit and eat this powder with water twice a day.
First remove the seeds of two to three bitter gourds and use a juicer to extract the juice.
This fruit is native to India and its neighboring countries but you can find it at Asian markets and herbal shops.6.
Mango LeavesThe delicate and tender mango leaves can be used to treat diabetes by regulating insulin levels in the blood. They can also help improve blood lipid profiles.Soak 10 to 15 tender mango leaves in a glass of water overnight.

CinnamonPowdered cinnamon has the ability to lower blood sugar levels by stimulating insulin activity. In the morning, filter the water and drink it on an empty stomach. You can also dry the leaves in the shade and grind them. Drink it daily.Another option is to boil two to four cinnamon sticks in one cup of water and allow it to steep for 20 minutes. FenugreekFenugreek is an herb that can also be used to control diabetes, improve glucose tolerance and lower blood sugar levels due to its hypoglycaemic activity. Being high in fiber, it slows down the absorption of carbohydrates and sugars.Soak two tablespoons of fenugreek seeds in water overnight. Pl suggest if my approach is right or begin with the best out of Bitter Gourd juice, Fenu Greek water, Mango leaf water, Aloe Vera Mix, Indian Gooseberry juice. Indian Gooseberry (Amla)Indian gooseberry, also known as Amla, is rich in vitamin C and Indian gooseberry juice promotes proper functioning of your pancreas. Also please suggest the Indian or hindi names of Banaba Leaf and Ground Bay Leaf if possible. Paromita April 9, 2014 at 4:01 pm ReplyCan you please let me know, which is more effective in controlling blood sugar? The leaves, berries and seeds of the Indian blackberry (Jambul) plant help in balancing the glucose level in blood and prevent insulin spikes. Powder the dried seeds or leaves of the plant and drink it with water twice a day.Fenugreek seeds are a rich source of fiber useful for controlling diabetes.
The fenugreek seeds can be soaked in water overnight and should be taken early in the morning before your breakfast.
