When a dog’s body temperature rises, the first thing you are likely to notice is uncontrollable panting.
If you suspect heat stroke in your pet, it is important to seek veterinary medical attention right away even if your pet seems to be better. There is no specific treatment for heat stroke and most of the treatment is trying to deal with the symptoms as they develop. Pets with heat stroke will require aggressive intravenous fluid therapy to correct dehydration and poor perfusion, oxygen therapy to help them breathe more comfortably and deal with the edema that frequently develop as a sequel to heat stroke, and frequently need plasma or blood transfusions to deal with the coagulation disorders and blood loss.
The Fourth of July can be a lot of fun for us humans but for our pets it can be terrifying.
Watch that human food! Your dogs will pull out their best sad puppy-dog eyes to get food from you and your guests. Keep your pets inside. The days following the fourth frequently see a rise in lost and found pets.
Consider medication. If you know your pets get extraordinarily stressed during the fireworks, ask your vet about some mild sedation.
Meet Rye:  He’s a happy, healthy 3-year-old Border Collie cross, shown here with his favorite toy, the purple tribble.  He never gave his mom any indication that there was anything wrong in his mouth, but one day, when he was yawning, his mom saw that he had a broken tooth!
Mom was a little embarrassed that she didn’t know how or when it happened, especially since she’s a veterinary technician, but she made an appointment right away for Rye’s Oral ATP.  The staff here at MPMC was very understanding—pets can injure their teeth and never let on that they have any discomfort (though we know that it has to hurt)! Not only was one tooth broken off, the one in front of it was fractured below the gum line, too!  We extracted both teeth and sutured the gums over the sites.  Rye was home with his family in a few hours and ready for dinner. The take-away message of Rye’s story is this:  Your pets can “hide” their dental disease and discomfort from you, and we never know what’s going on under the gum line until we look.  Make sure to follow your veterinarian’s recommendations for home care and professional care, to keep your pets healthy and pain-free!
If your pet is lucky enough to have pulpitis only at the tip of a tooth, the tooth may still live and become healthy.  The tooth should be X-rayed yearly during routine dental cleanings (Oral-ATPs) to monitor the pulp and the roots. Limit your pet to soft or firm rubber type chew toys, especially if he or she is a “hard chewer” or likes to toss the toys in the air and catch them.
Our last three postings have focused on plaque and the dangers of leaving it on the teeth.  Let’s talk about how to defeat it! At your chosen time, settle in with your pet on the bed, chair, bathroom counter, wherever you’d like to work.
Once the toothpaste is readily accepted, try putting the dab on the toothbrush and allowing your pet to lick it off. If at any time your pet becomes nervous, just back off to the previous step for a day or two. Most of us associate fleas with the warm summer months but lately we here at Mueller have seen quite a few fleas and some flea allergy dermatitis as a result. Fleas have a complex life cycle and not all the preventions and treatment methods are effective for all life stages. Topical flea preventions such as Parastar, Revolution, Frontline, and Advantage – These work by killing the adult fleas and preventing the eggs from hatching.
Newer oral flea medications such as Nexgard, Trifexis and Comfortis – These are oral, so once they are in the pet, they cannot be removed. Talk with your veterinarian on finding the right flea prevention and how often to apply based on your pet’s needs and lifestyle. Fleas can also carry other diseases, such as Plague, Tularemia, cat scratch disease and parasites, such as tapeworms.  They can also suck so much blood from an animal that they can become anemic and need blood transfusions.
Stage III Periodontal Disease:  The infection destroys more bone and more of the tooth’s attachment. Last month we learned about some of the special qualities that make plaque so difficult to remove from teeth.  Plaque that is not physically brushed away on a daily basis will contribute to dental disease. We all know plaque as that soft film that grows on our teeth overnight.  Left alone, plaque is the basis for tooth decay, tartar formation, gingivitis and periodontitis, and ultimately the loss of teeth.  Sure it’s disgusting, but also fascinating in its own, slimy way! The bacteria begin manufacturing a molecular matrix, a substance which surrounds and protects the bacteria.  The complex of bacteria and surrounding substances is called a biofilm. So this month we are talking Fall Safety, and I have decided to cover one of my favorite type of parties and get-togethers, Game Day! When you are hosting game day celebrations, don’t forget about your four legged friends and how to make it a safe and fun event for them too!
Make sure that the people you invite to your home know that you have cats and dogs and what the rules are for their outside activities. If you haven’t seen that Budweiser commercial with the dog that has aired recently, it is quite a tear jerker.
During normal growth and development, the upper and lower jaws, along with the teeth, grow in harmony with each other.
Although the facial structures and jaw bones are in a correct relationship to one another as seen in these diagrams, in many instances the teeth may be misaligned. A normal dog’s body temperature is 100-102 and when temperatures climb above 106, disastrous results can occur. Some dogs may whine or cry or just be restless, some dogs will be lethargic and just not have the energy to move around.

The most important thing is to cool off the pet rapidly, but not too rapidly as to cause hypothermia, an abnormally low body temperature. These treatments may be needed for several days and some complications do not arise for hours to days after the initial onset. As much as we try to explain it to them, they just don’t understand the loud booms in the sky. Too much human food can often upset your dog’s stomach and may even land him in the hospital. Secure all your pets inside, dogs and cats alike as they are likely to run off during the fireworks show you’ve been looking forward to. Some finders may not take the pet to the vet or shelter to have it scanned for a microchip and will rely solely on tags to get them home.
Is it easier in your morning routine, in front of the TV during primetime, at night before bed? It should be a place where your pet is comfortable, and where you can easily reach and see what you’re doing.  Place the toothbrush where it can be seen, but don’t try to use it yet. Do this daily for about a week, and you should find that Mittens or Skippy is waiting for you at the brushing spot for the daily treat!
If your pet accepts this step, you can work toward brushing the front teeth, then the back teeth. Once you’re all the way to brushing, most pets will graciously accept the brushing in exchange for the yummy toothpaste treat. There is usually no need to brush the insides of the teeth (unless your veterinarian has recommended it for your pet), since most of the problem areas are under the lips and cheeks. I am not quite sure of the whys of the recent uptick in flea cases, but it is a good reminder that in the Sacramento area, flea prevention should be year round. They may take up to 24 hours to take full effect and last about 30 days (that can be shortened with repeated water exposure and bathing, though they are mostly waterproof).
Only 10% of the fleas in your house are actually on the pet (only the adults are on the dog).
Just like when we are bit by mosquitoes, dogs aren’t allergic to the fleas, but they are allergic to the antigens in their saliva.
So control the fleas not only for annoyance and comfort, but for the health of you, your family and your pets!
This is the only stage of dental disease that is completely reversible.  If the plaque remains to cause more trouble, the dental disease will advance to Stage II. Treatment for Stage IV periodontal disease includes extraction of the severely affected teeth. The bacteria become less-susceptible to antibiotics, and their attachment to the pellicle becomes stronger.  At this point, no amount of rinsing will remove the bacteria—the whole plaque layer must be physically wiped off the tooth (bring on the toothbrush!).
When I wrote this article, the World Series was just beginning, so I am sure by the time this is published, the World Series champions will have been decided but I must say Go Giants anyways. I know we all love nachos and fried finger foods, but our pets may decide to sample them also.
These costumes (thinking of my Raider fan friends) can be very scary and stressful for our four legged friends.
Some pets will try to take a sip and due to their smaller size, a very small amount of alcohol can cause vomiting, respiratory depression, and sometimes even coma. Even if you didn’t bring your four legged friend to the party, remember they are at home waiting for you. This type of condition is known as a Class I malocclusion, where the jaws are correctly positioned, but the teeth may require treatment for problems such as: crowding, tipped teeth, rotated teeth, missing teeth, cross bites or extra spacing. A dog normally cools itself by panting, not sweating like humans do; which means that hot temperatures, being overweight, being confined in a hot environment (kennel, dryer cage or outdoors without shade), having respiratory or cardiovascular compromise, or being one of those smooshy face breeds (like Pugs or Bulldogs), can quickly result in a dog’s inability to get rid of heat. It is very important that if you see these signs, that you get your pet to somewhere cooler, stop exercise and offer water. Common complications of elevated body temperature include the inability of the body to clot, severe bloody diarrhea and shedding of the gastrointestinal tract, acute kidney failure, seizures, fluid in the lungs and brain, heart failure, and death. Once the pet’s core temperature has been normalized, your veterinarian will likely perform tests to assess organ function, ability to clot, ability to oxygenate tissues, and electrolyte imbalances.
If neurological signs develop, pets may need to be placed in a medically induced coma until the brain swelling resolves.
Consider telling your guests not to feed your pets or put a few (emphasis on few!) of his favorite treats out for your guests to alleviate their guilt.
Fleas are not just yucky, but they can harbor disease and can create a very uncomfortable situation for our pets. Adult fleas can live 4-6 weeks, depending on the environment.  As soon as the adult flea hatches and finds an appropriate host, they start feeding on blood. Comfortis and Trifexis can take 4 hours to take full effect, NexGard is labeled that it has maximum effect within 24 hours. Vacuuming the house and the areas were your pet rests and lays will help minimize the number of eggs, larvae and pupae that are in the environment.

These teeth are often loose, and frequently extraction is the only option, in order to improve the pet’s overall health.
If you are going to have multiple people in and out of the house, consider putting your pet in an area of the house that won’t have as much traffic. Many high fat foods are not only bad for the waistline of our pets, but can cause serious and even life threatening gastrointestinal upset. If you think your four legged friends may get anxious or scared because of these unusual outfits, consider finding a less stressful and quiet place for them to be during party time.
After a General Practice Residency at the Mountainside Hospital, he continued postgraduate training in Orthodontics and Implant Dentistry. It acts onthe teeth and jaws for 24 hours each day, patient cooperation isnot a problem, and as a result the treatment time is short. A dog must have access to clean and fresh water at all times but since panting cools by evaporation of water this is critical in the heat of summer. Some of these signs don’t develop for hours after the exposure and the quicker that they are recognized and stabilized, the better the prognosis.
X-rays may be necessary depending on how the pet is breathing to assess lung and heart function. A female flea can start producing eggs within 24-48 hours of her first blood meal and she can produce up to 40 eggs a day. Make sure you only use the weight appropriate dose for the labeled species; mistakes with these medications can be toxic and life threatening if used incorrectly. In heavily infested houses, flea sprays and bombs can be used to further get rid of the fleas in the environment. Flea allergic dogs can be very miserable; they can lose hair, create secondary infections through self-trauma, and be so itchy they don’t want to do anything else. This will lessen the chance that you will have to spend game day searching for your lost pet or worse spending time at the ER. He is one of the few dentists in the world that has formal training in Implant Surgery, Implant Prosthodontics, and Orthodontics.
Placing cool water (not ice water as this will cause constriction of blood vessels and further inability to get rid of heat) on the armpits, groin and paw pads can be helpful. So use common sense when the weather is hot, never leave a pet in a hot car even for a minute, if your pet is overweight or a smoosh face breed, keep them indoors in the air conditioning during the summer, and don’t exercise in the hot weather. A consult with your veterinarian is necessary to help treat these allergic episodes and treatment will depend on their clinical signs. By treating the pet, you remove the food for the flea and ability of the flea to reproduce. Be careful of those sugar free treats too; many have xylitol in them and that can be very toxic to animals.
Keep human treats out of reach of pets and make sure you notify your guests if your pet can have snacks and what snacks are safe for them. The pupae then wait for the humidity, ambient temperature and a host to be present (they can sense carbon dioxide and warmth) before hatching.
The pupae are almost indestructible and can lay dormant for many months.  So the flea cycle can go as fast as every 2 weeks or as slow as a few years. The growthmodulation minimizes the necessity of extraction of permanentteeth and probably orthognathic surgery. Lack of compliance in adolescent populationhas been a major concern of healthcare providers.
The duration of prefunctionalphase of treatment was 6 months. Then Forsus appliance was inserted (Figs 3A to C). After 22 monthsof treatment, the fixed appliance was debonded, a fixedretainer was bonded in the lower anterior region and wraparound retainer was fabricated for the upper arch.Cephalometric AnalysisPAR (Peer Assessment Rating) IndexDISCUSSIONManagement of class II malocclusion has wide spectrum ofoptions. Since this patient was adolescent, it was decidedto treat her with some form of growth modulation. Thepossible options are headgear to restrict the growth ofmaxilla, removable functional appliance and fixedfunctional appliance. Since, very little amount of activegrowth was left, we could not take a chance of patient’scompliance, therefore, the option of using a headgear orremovable functional appliance was ruled out.
We couldnot use a rigid fixed functional appliance viz herbst, as wedo not have the laboratory facility to fabricate herbstappliance. Teeth locked in stableclass I intercuspation are more likely to transfer maxillarygrowth forces to mandible.5 This patient was in decelerationphase of growth spurt, when growth modulation treatmentwas done.
Pretreatment tracing is in blackcolor ink and posttreatment tracing is in red colorThe advantage of choosing growth modulation mode oftreatment in this case was, it avoided the necessity of premolarextraction and an orthognathic surgery at a later stage. The use of this viz Forsus appliance helps to integratethe functional and fixed appliance phases of therapy intosingle phase of treatment and minimizes the duration oftreatment.
