Understanding the underlying mechanism of bypass surgery is an urgent goal because the expense and complexity of the operation place it out of reach for the majority of obese diabetics. In this vein, Laferrère has tried treating her patients with standard medications that were designed to mimic the effect of incretins.
In 2010 Laferrère embarked on another avenue of inquiry after she met Christopher Newgard, a biochemist and director of the Sarah W. Putting those two pieces of information together, Laferrère wondered whether these amino acids might work in tandem with the incretins to facilitate diabetes remission after bypass surgery. To explore the issue, he plans to feed obese, insulin-resistant rats a diet lacking BCCAs to see whether decreasing dietary sources of these amino acids improves blood sugar levels.
