Frankly, the calf muscles are insanely stubborn and a pain in the ass to grow, which is why most people stop focusing on them altogether. Successful calf development starts with an understanding of the anatomy and muscle fiber types involved, which directly influence the exercises, rep schemes, and loads used. Even though the gastrocnemius is the calf muscle everyone sees when you’re prancing around the beach, the soleus is incredibly important. Aesthetically, it adds height to the gastrocnemius and helps it pop out of the legs with 3D-like effect. But there’s one key difference that has massive implications for calf training — muscle fiber types. Combine the two effectively—leveraging their individual attributes—and you’ll see growth skyrocket. Straight-leg — all straight-leg exercises, usually done standing, primarily hit the gastrocnemius. Bent-leg — all bent-leg calf exercises, usually done sitting, almost exclusively work the soleus. It’s an easy pattern to keep track of, but ample balance is critical for effective results.
Don’t use momentum or bounce — the recoil takes most of the emphasis off the calf muscles (it displaces it to your Achilles). Use the foundational calf workout below to supplement your leg days—calf exercises ARE NOT a replacement for squats and lunges—and leverage all 4 power exercises below to keep growth consistent and fresh. The Standing Barbell Calf Raise is an all-around calf killer that not only hits the gastrocnemius, but also works the core and cranks up the intensity. Variation(s): You can also do these with dumbbells, a Smith machine, or a standing squat machine.
Maybe you’ve heard the hype about High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts and how they improve your cardiovascular fitness while helping you build lean muscle and burn fat.
High Intensity Interval Training or HIIT is a type of workout where you give maximum effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise followed by short recovery periods. Research shows that shorter, high-intensity workouts can do more for your health than longer, more leisurely workouts. HIIT also helps burn more fat at a faster rate.
The key to HIIT training that makes it different from basic intervals is that high intensity intervals involve maximum effort not just a higher heart rate. So to differentiate from plain old intervals you have to push yourself to the max during the work portion followed by a period of recovery. HIIT workouts are different from other types of interval training because the high intensity intervals involve your MAX effort and not just a higher heart rate. There are many ways to create high intensity intervals by changing the timing of the work vs. Tabata intervals can be incorporated into riding a bike, running, exercises using your body weight, plyometrics and strength training, but there is one variable that doesn’t change—the formula. HIIT can be for all types of people, you just may not be using all out effort when you first start.  HIIT helps people significantly improve their cardiovascular fitness, endurance, and fat loss without losing the muscle mass they already have. With the increased intensity, you can cause more wear and tear on your body, so make sure you follow these HIIT safety tips.
If you have a sedentary lifestyle or are inactive, you may have an increased risk for coronary disease. Always warm up and cool down for at least five minutes before and after your HIIT workouts. Take time to recover from your HIIT workouts.  Take at least one to two days off per week from HIIT workouts.
If you ever experience chest pain or difficulty breathing during your HIIT workouts, start to cool down. Don’t stop completely because your blood can pool in your extremities and cause lightheadedness, just stop the intensity and cool down slowly. My HIIT program on Get Healthy U TV features workouts that specifically target your upper and lower body. If you only have ten minutes, you can choose a 10-minute booty blast or a 10-minute ab blast, too! Not sure if I'll get a reply but it's worth a shot, I loved doing HIIT workouts before but I haven't exercised at all in the past 3 months, I've gained some weight and lost all of my stamina and I've decided to start working out again. Well - don’t look at it as “doomed” - but HIIT workouts are intense so if you are still needing to build up stamina - it makes sense you may feel nauseated. When purchasing running shoes, go to a specialty store where the salespeople are runners themselves.
Your cadence, or the number of steps you take per minute, should be around 180 steps per minute (for both feet), according to most expert runners. Before running it is best to do some dynamic stretches, such as walking lunges and leg swings. Running too much too quickly can result in many overuse injuries, such as runner’s knee, Achilles tendonitis and shin splints. While running is a great workout, failing to do other types of exercise is a surefire way to get hurt down the road.

Proactive recovery means working to prevent damage and allowing your body to recover and adapt after a hard workout. Genetics and a predisposition to explosive calf growth do play a surprisingly large role in that, but equally—if not more so—calf issues are predicated on the willy nilly, uncalculated, half-assed nature at which most people attack the muscle group.
Slap 10 minutes of dedicated, progressive calf work onto the tail end of leg day and you’ll quickly sprout lumps on the backside of your lower legs. It’s the visible muscle that bulges out of any pair of killer calves, and conversely, is noticeably absent from toothpick legs. It sits underneath the gastrocnemius and Achilles, and because of that, isn’t actually visible.
It also specializes in endurance-based activities (more on that in a second) and works synergistically to improve the strength of your lower legs, which directly translates to accelerated growth. The gastrocnemius is predominantly composed of fast-twitch fibers (FT), while the soleus is made up of slow-twitch fibers (ST). And if you want to take leg training to the next level, superset Standing Barbell Calf Raises with Barbell Squats one after another. Stand with your feet slightly more narrow than shoulder-width, with the balls of your feet on top of the plates. Donkey Calf Raises are an effective move to hit your gastrocnemius from an alternative angle. You can improve your heart health and significantly reduce your risk for metabolic syndrome, as well as a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors including obesity, high triglycerides, low levels of HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure and high blood sugar. The quick bursts of all-out effort, followed by less active recovery periods get your heart rate up and burns more fat in less time.
The high intensity part of HIIT involves giving it your all for a certain amount of seconds (duration can vary). You can do as many Tabata intervals in a row as you’d like but for most fitness enthusiasts, if you are going full out effort, 20-30 minutes is max.
Izumi Tabata who discovered that he could shorten the training time and vastly improve fitness levels with a specific HIIT regimen.
HIIT is for you if you want to try something new, if you want more for from your workout or if you are a diehard fitness enthusiast and you want a bigger challenge. Family history, cigarette smoking, hypertension, diabetes, abnormal cholesterol levels and obesity increase this risk, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.
With HIIT workouts, you don’t have to carve out two hours for a workout—you can get an effective heart-pumping workout that combines cardio and strength training into 30 minutes.
In these workouts you’ll perform bodyweight exercises, strength exercises, athletic drills and plyometrics.
No more I don’t have time excuses for you!  The best part is you will soon see how 30 minutes invested in exercise can change your fitness level and body. And yeah I immediately jumped to HIIT, I've modified it a lot and was going slowly but I still did too much and felt nauseated. I think it’s totally ok to modify and keep trying if it doesn’t make you feel sick or discouraged.
They can observe the way you run, discuss your running goals and help you find a pair of shoes that will work best for you. Your foot should land underneath your hips, and you should run with your back straight and leaning slightly forward at the waist. A good rule of thumb is to increase mileage by no more than 5 to 10 percent from week to week because the body needs time to adapt to training changes. Do strength training for your upper body, lower body and core two to three times a week. Reactive recovery methods are used as a way to manage existing damage and include ice baths, wearing compression socks and using a foam roller.
Mark looks like he's been working out to get ready for the role, and his partner in crime, The Rock, has likely been hitting the gym in preparation for his return to the ring. It’s composed of 2 different heads (medial and lateral) that together create a diamond shape when grown out. Translated for training purposes, FT fibers generate power and respond better to heavy loads; ST fibers are more conducive to endurance-based aerobic training and respond better to higher reps. They slide nicely into the back-end of any leg workout, and shouldn’t take up more than 10 minutes to thoroughly blast from a variety of angles. Because you’re bent over with weight on your back, they tend to work the core and hamstrings to a higher degree.
HIIT workouts get your heart rate up and improve your cardiovascular fitness level while burning more fat and calories in less time. Don’t be fooled by thinking that shorter workouts mean easier. HIIT training is not for the faint of heart.

He worked with the Japanese speed skating team and developed a timed interval program as described above.  His research challenged the notion that you need a lot of time and miles under your feet to see results.
If you want to get familiar with HIIT before joining a class, or if you want the ease of doing HIIT workouts from home, I have a HIIT program on Get Healthy U TV. Select from any of the seven fun classes and fire up your metabolism. You can start with light weights for the first few times and figure out what weights are best for your current fitness level. My question is can I continue doing HIIT but keep on modifying to ease it up and built up as I regain my old fitness level or am I doomed to do easier workouts for a start?
And no matter what I would cross train with some moderate (still hard) workouts including strength and cardio!
Unfortunately, in order to keep our content free for users, we do need to have ads on our site and we don't control each individual one. Anche per rassodare le gambe, come gia accaduto per i glutei, e efficace lo squat, ossia il piegarsi sulle gambe e risalire mantenendo la schiena sempre dritta. Running in shoes with too little or too much support can result in anything from blisters and sore feet to muscle imbalances and injury. You should talk to a specialist before considering changing the way you run, in order to ensure an injury-free transition.
If you begin to experience any pain, reduce mileage until the pain subsides and slowly build back up (key word: slowly).
It is also a good idea to incorporate cross-training, such as biking or swimming, in order to improve your muscle balance while maintaining your overall fitness. If you go out for a run and notice a sharp or stabbing pain, stop running until the pain subsides.
With Halo Top — the dangerously delicious ice cream with 240 calories, 24g protein, and 20g fiber PER PINT. Tabata-style takes high-intensity training to another level with workouts comprised of 20 seconds of all-out effort followed by 10 seconds of recovery, eight cycles in a row—a total of four minutes. Yes, HIIT should be intense, but pushing too hard, too fast can result in injuries and other setbacks. Keep in mind, quicker doesn’t mean easier—we are talking about high-intensity here and that means a sweaty, heart-pumping, challenging workout where you push yourself!  CHALLENGE TO CHANGE, I always say! Feel free to press the mute button next time that happens or refresh the page as you'll often see a new ad.
He's taking on his long-time enemy John Cena on Sunday night with other famous names like The Undertaker and Chris Jericho expected to participate in the televised event. I love doing and teaching these high-intensity workouts because they can be done in 30-minutes or less. Yes, HIIT involves short bursts of intense all-out effort, but here’s the good news: you know it’s over in 30 minutes! My suggestion: listen to your body, use modifications where necessary, choose good form over speed and ease into how many HIIT workouts you do a week.
