If you want to get rid of fleas, this seems the easiest way to catch and kill the monstrous fleas, yes a flea trap! At night, place a plate or a bowl in each of your rooms, preferably in the middle of the room. Warning: As you are using fire at night when applying this home remedy to trap fleas, you should be extra cautious. If you have been thinking of a flea bomb loaded with chemicals to eliminate fleas from your house, you must reconsider once and give a try to this herbal spray instead. Collect everything that cannot be vacuumed and wash it at the hottest setting of your washer.
Spray your carpets, furniture, pet bedding, window sills, floors, every nook and corner of your house. Do this daily for at least 2-7 days depending upon how bad is the flea infestation in your home.
When fleas become less noticeable, you may then repeat every 3-4 days and thereafter once a week throughout the flea season.
If you start using this non toxic spray just when the flue season is approaching, you will need to spray only once a week throughout the flea season.
As common an ingredient as salt can get you rid of tough fleas, especially from your carpets. Fill up your spice bottle with this salt leaving a little room on the top so that you can shake and sprinkle the salt from it. Precaution: Although boric acid is low in toxicity for human beings and pets too, it should be used cautiously when kids and pets are around. Now wherever you think the fleas or their larvae might hide, sprinkle the DE in thin layers. You may even use this Diatomaceous earth in your yard but this will need a large quantity of the powder. Crush a handful of fresh pennyroyal leaves in a mortar and pestle till the leaves release oil and aroma.
If your house is not badly infested by fleas but yes if it’s irritating due to even a mild flea infestation, you can use the herb rosemary for controlling such flea problem in your home. Take all the herbs and grind them together using a mortar and pestle or in a coffee grinder. Sprinkle this herbal powder on your carpet, furniture, pet’s bedding, below furniture, window sills or anywhere else where you think there may be fleas. While you can get a lots of flea spray in the market, they all contain chemicals that can be hazardous in a long term.
Horse apple (Maclura pomifera) belongs to mulberry family and is commonly known as Osage orange. Place the fruit or the pieces all around your house, in rooms, hallway, window sills and even in yards. These fruits not only control fleas but also other insects and rodents including field mouse, grass snake etc.
Whatever home remedies for flea control you decide to apply, it’s better to begin with the arrival of flea season or even before this season starts.
Sara is a Boston-based registered dietitian who works with clients to improve their health by optimizing nutrition. I read that feeding your dog a quarter tsp ( a pinch ) of powdered sulfur orally, every 10 days, will eliminate chiggers, ticks bited, mosquito and flea bites. For what its worth. Jade Inez Carlisle Havent found the sulfer and will buy some soon.My dog for some reason hasnt had any prob this year as previous yrs.
It does but it's also toxic if too much is inhaled so be careful not spray it around your pets and make sure the room is well ventilated. Get one of those electric zappers that looks like a racquet…stroke it at an angle over the bed or affected area. I dissolve a tbsp of regular salt in a 16oz spray bottle and fill the bottle with warm water to dissolve. Rubbing alcohol can cause eye and skin irritation for people and pets, not to mention respiratory and digestion issues as well.
Patricia Sue Boling The vet just gave my dog some liquid called revolution and withing 30 minutes I could see the fleas falling off my dog.
The Athlete’s foot typically affects the skin on the feet between the toes, but can move anywhere and even affect the toenails. Athlete’s foot and fungus may also spread to other parts of the body, notably the groin and underarms, by those who scratch their feet and then touch themselves elsewhere. Fungal infection of toenails, called Onychomycosis, is a common foot health problem that many people do not recognize. Our feet have to bear the consequences of all the physical activity that we do during the day and ironically they are also the most neglected part of our bodies.
Bleaching agents are known for the drying effect they have on fungi causing the infection and the ultimate aim of treating any infection is to get rid of the infectious agent completely. Always mix the bleaching agent with water before using it to treat fungal infection of the foot. Baking soda is a well known agent for treating various skin infections at home including those of the feet caused by fungi. Leave the foot in the solution for 15 minutes and keep massaging the infected area with the baking soda solution.
To treat foot fungus with Vicks VapoRub apply generous amount of the rub on the infected part of the foot and rub it for 2-3 minutes.
Boric acid is an amazing chemical agent for treating various skin infections including bacterial and fungal.
Mix liquid boric acid and water in equal parts and use this as a foot soak for treating the infection.
Definition: Canine Atopic dermatitis is a genetically predisposed inflammatory and pruritic allergic skin disease with characteristic clinical features. Diagnosis: The diagnosis of CAD begins with attaining a good history and recognizing the primary clinical signs, performing a dermatologic examination to characterize lesions and distribution, creating a differential list to work from, and performing some basic diagnostic tests to refine the differential list.
History and Clinical signs: The most important aspect of evaluating a pruritic dog is obtaining a comprehensive history. Dogs with CAD are pruritic (itchy), and pruritus is usually the initial and most salient feature of the presenting problem.
Parasites: The dermatologist will treat and control for all ectoparasites that are pruritic, and rule out demodecosis if there are compatible lesions. Diagnostic tests: The tests performed on patients presented for pruritus will be dependent upon the history and lesions identified during a complete dermatology examination. Differential list: The differential list will be dependent on all information gathered after history is obtained, the exam is performed and results of some basic diagnostic tests are available. Components of therapy used in the management of CAD: As there is no one cause or trigger for CAD, there is not one treatment approach that will satisfy the needs of all patients.
In order to prescribe ASIT, allergens to which a dog is hypersensitive need to be identified through allergy testing. When considering which type of test (intradermal or serum) should be performed, consider that neither modality is perfect.  Both intradermal and serum testing have their place in dermatology practice. Intradermal allergy testing (IDT) detects the presence of tissue-bound IgE and the ability of the antibody to bind allergen and cause mast cell degranulation to form an erythematous wheal.
In clinical practice, I expect that 70% of well characterized dogs with CAD will have a 50% reduction in pruritus. Conjunctivitis is the term which depicts the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the transparent tissue that covers the surface of the eye. The nature of the discharge and the fact if the infection is limited to only one eye or both eyes may help find out the cause.
When only one eye is affected and the cat is pawing at it, it may indicate the presence of a foreign object or simply eyelashes rubbing against the eyes. When the discharge appears like mucous or pus and the conjunctiva appears red and swollen, it is very possible that the infection is caused by bacteria. When the cat is squinting and keeping the eye shut from pain, a foreign object may be embedded or other serious eye disorders may be into play such as keratitis, uveitis or glaucoma which may result in blindness. When the discharge is purulent and due to bacteria, antibiotics may be needed to clear out the infection.
There are really no home remedies that may help a pet once the infection has set in, however, the pet may be helped feel more comfortable at home. Cats with watery discharge may be helped in some cases at home by applying a moist warm tea bag (just plain tea) to the eyes due to its tannin contents.
Simple sterile saline solution (without disinfectants) may be helpful as a temporary measure to clean the eye and give relief.
Some pharmacies or the internet stores sell over the counter Terramycin which is an ointment which can help eye infections in case of conjunctivitis. There have been reports of owners healing their cats from eye problems upon rubbing one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar on their neck. Fleas love to survive on warm vertebrates and thus your dogs, rabbits, cats and in fact, even you can be their hosts. If you give a bath to your dog with a dishwashing liquid, you’ll be able to kill the fleas on its body too. When they jump towards light, they will get stuck in the high viscosity of the liquid with soap. Vacuum each corner, upholstery as well as cervices with the help of various vacuum attachments. It acts as a desiccant or a dehydrating agent which causes severe dehydration in fleas due to which they are killed. As you have worked the acid down into the carpets and upholstery, it will continue to kill the fleas. While fleas start dying 4-6 hours after you treat your home with DE, it’s still better to leave the thing for longer. While this Diatomaceous earth is non toxic, it is still a fine powder that may get messy and irritate your eyes or throat. European pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium) and American pennyroyal (Hedeoma pulegiodes) have been traditionally used to deter fleas. You can make your own herbal flea spray with such natural ingredients as lemons, rosemary and certain essential oil. It is a volatile oil derived from stem of the plant Cymbopogon nardus (Ceylon citronella) or Cymbopogon winteratus (Java type citronella) along with greenish blue lemon scented leaves.
Thereafter, you can do once a week to keep the fleas as well as mosquitoes away from your home.

The other names of horse apple include hedge apple, monkey ball, bois d’arc, bodark, or bodock. For getting the best out of the fruit, use the green ones and let them be there till they dry out. You can find her running, sweating in hot yoga, cooking in the kitchen, dining out, or exploring. Here are the two most common fungus issues our athlete patients deal with and some solutions to fix the problems. Fungi easily attack the nail, thriving off keratin, the nail’s protein substance, and exfoliated nail bed tissue. If it is ignored, it could impair one’s ability to work or even walk because it is frequently accompanied by thickening of the nails, which then cannot be easily trimmed, and may cause pain while wearing shoes. A suitable treatment plan may include prescribing topical or oral medication (such as Lamisil), and debridement (removal of diseased nail matter and debris) of an infected nail. Most of us spend a fortune looking after our face and hands but spend very little time pampering our feet.
And liquids known for bleaching clothes are known to help eliminate the micro-organisms responsible for the fungus. However, bleaching liquids, powders and solvents contain very strong chemicals that may harm your skin if used undiluted. To treat the infection mix one part bleaching agent with three parts water and soak your infected foot in this liquid mixture for 20 minutes. The chemicals in vinegar help fight the foot fungus infections as well but one has to be very regular in the treatment while using vinegar. Dry your foot without washing it with water and repeat the treatment every four hours for 15 days at least.
However, as with other home remedies one has to be very regular with the treatment using baking soda. After 15 minutes wash your foot with warm water and dry it completely using a soft towel or a hair dryer. It is eucalyptus oil and camphor based rub that effectively gets rid of the virus responsible for causing common cold. Leave the rub on the skin for 30 minutes and wash off using warm water and anti-bacterial soap.
The chemical properties of the acid work brilliantly on the agents responsible for the infection and eliminate them completely.
Keep the infected foot in the solution for 20-30 minutes and then wash the foot using warm water and strong soap. While the chemical bleaches well it doesn’t harm the skin at all and this is one reason it can be safely used for treating fungal foot infections. Mix one part hydrogen peroxide with one part water and pour the resulting liquid in a basin.
The treatment should be done once a day for 15-20 days to eliminate the infection causing fungus. Infections of the foot caused by fungus should be treated at the earliest to ensure the infection doesn’t spread or worsen. If itch precedes the appearance of any rash, I am almost certain I am dealing with allergic skin disease (if parasites are already controlled for) as the primary problem. They will review clinical signs, lesions and treatment for demodecosis and sarcoptic mange. Avoidance: Complete avoidance of offending allergens is typically not practical and is difficult to sustain. Control of Secondary Infections: Antimicrobial therapy is used for active infections and may have a purpose in prophylactic therapy in some situations.
Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy, is the practice of administering increasing quantities of an allergen extract to an allergic subject to ameliorate symptoms associated with subsequent exposure to the causative allergen.
Essentially, the pet is “desensitized” to specific allergens to which it has demonstrated hypersensitivity, and immune tolerance is induced. None of the commercially available serum tests has been proven to be more accurate than another in reviewed publications. Antihistamines: The appeal of antihistamines is that they are nonsteroidal and relatively safe, yet they are not approved by the FDA for the use in CAD.
Essential Fatty acids: Fatty acids improve the skin and hair coat and enhance the epidermal barrier. Topicals:  Shampoos, conditioners, sprays, rinses, and leave-on conditioners are available and may remove allergens from the skin surface. Corticosteroids: Corticosteroids are anti-inflammatory agents used in 65-80% of atopic dogs.
Cyclosporine: There is strong evidence for the use of oral cyclosporine in the management of CAD.
It is well tolerated by most dogs for long term therapy.  The most common side effects reported include gingival hyperplasia, papillomatosis, vomiting, diarrhea, bacterial infections.
The main function of the conjunctiva is to protect the eye by trapping debris and protecting the eye from dangerous viruses and bacteria.
When both eyes are generally affected and the discharge appears clear, allergies or systemic diseases may be the triggers. Some times the secretions are so thick that the eyelids may appear sealed after the cat takes a nap.
If the infection starts in one eye and then progresses to the other later, Clamydia or Mycoplasma may be suspected.
The antibiotics are topical in the form of eye drops or ointments and need to be given as prescribed without stopping early, even if the cat’s eyes appear to be already healing. The eye can be cleaned and flushed for a few minutes with fresh water from the faucet and it should be checked for any foreign matter. There are many serious conditions out there and it is not worth risking the cat’s sight! If your cat is exhibiting eye problems, please refer to your veterinarian for a hand’s on examination.
We had just moved to a new house, I didn’t have a new vet yet, and I should have known my cat would have a stress-related flair up with conjunctivitis. One reason for their overwhelming presence in your house is the fact that the eggs of fleas can get dropped anywhere inside your house.
Also, do not let your pets and children roam freely when you have laid a trap with soapy water and lit candles in the middle of each room.
You need to sprinkle boric acid wherever you doubt there may be fleas, their larvae or eggs. Place some pebbles into the container to prevent caking of boric acid when it is stored away. Don’t sprinkle boric acid on counter-tops, especially in kitchen where food is prepared.
However, pennyroyal which belongs to the mint family, is dangerous for human and animal health. If you have kids and pets around, keep them at a height where they cannot reach these tea bags.
While dogs can be washed with rosemary water (made by boiling rosemary leaves in water), cats should not be given this treatment due to certain reactions in them. Preventing the fleas from developing at the first instance will help you a lot in your efforts for flea control. Eating Food-Mostly Plants, and improving our relationship with food, is the secret to lifelong health in her eyes. Wipe the walls and floors with deleted bleach to get rid of their trail and before you know it their all gone. I have some homemade cleaner of whte vinegar soaked citrus peels for months that I dilute with water, so I added salt and dissolved it, since vinegar (apple cider) citrus deter's and kills fleas along with peppermint.
Athlete’s foot is also much more common in people who tend to have moist feet, a condition called hyperhidrosis. This is especially common among athletes where the repetitive stress of activity distorts the toenail construct and allows organisms, which already exist on the skin, to invade under the nail plate.
When the feet are not cared for properly it often results in foot infections of various kinds including bacterial and fungal. Vinegar does not contain strong chemicals as does bleaching liquid and therefore can be used undiluted.
Your infected skin may sting a bit when exposed to pure vinegar but this only proves that the vinegar is working on the infection causing fungi.
In half a liter of water add half cup baking soda and immediately soak your infected foot in this solution.
Perform the treatment two times a day for 10 days to eliminate the infection causing fungi.
However, many people also use the rub for treating infections of the feet like athlete’s foot. Application of the rub may sting a bit but this is because of the strong nature of camphor. The acid is available in both liquid as well as powder form and should be used with water for treating fungal infections of the feet. Place the infected foot in the basin for 20 minutes while gently massaging the infected area.
In regions where fleas are not a problem, CAD is the most common canine allergic skin disease.
It is characterized by chronicity, pruritus, typical lesion distribution and a familial history. Food trials are also essential prior to confirming CAD in a dog with non-seasonal pruritus.
Empiric treatment for sarcoptic mange can be considered a diagnostic test, and is always appropriate to prescribe. If a dog has seasonal disease, flea allergy dermatitis and insect bite hypersensitivity are differentials. No evidence that avoidance alone is 100% successful, but certain avoidance measures can be helpful and make the pet feel better. Shampoos, sprays, and topically applied medications with barrier enhancement properties are available.
Allergen specific immunotherapy (ASIT) should be recommended in all cases of CAD, unless clinical signs are very mild and controlled easily with nonsteroidal therapy.
A positive allergy test indicates the presence of excessive amounts of IgE, and a positive result may be associated with clinical allergy or subclinical hypersensitivity. There are several tests available and each uses a slightly different method to detect the serum IgE levels. They are used in 30-50% of CAD patients, but only 10-15% of dogs have a sustained reduction in pruritus. In addition, restoration or enhancement of the compromised epidermal barrier may reduce allergen penetration, microbe penetration, and irritant exposure to the skin immune system.

They are appealing because of their rapid time to effect, but side effects occur with chronic usage. However, as with any tissue, the conjunctiva may be prone to irritation and infection, therefore causing conjunctivitis.
Other causes may be related to irritants such as dust, wind, and allergens which often cause eye itchiness with the cat pawing at the eye and rubbing its face. Terramycin is an eye ointment available over the counter which can help for cat conjunctivitis. If something is identified, a q-tip may be used to carefully and gently allow the debris to stick to the cotton. After Googling, I (skeptically) dabbed ACV + tiny bit of water on the back of his neck, and the next morning his eyes were almost completely clear. Don’t ever buy DE used for pool filtration systems as they are hazardous when breathed in.
Citronella oil effectively repels insects such as fleas and ticks, mosquitoes, black flies etc.
The flea activity is usually under control by the next day and I only spray once a week because the salt stays active for several days, and I have never had a problem with damaged furniture or carpet discoloration. Debridement allows for reduction of fungal load and more effective penetration of topical medications when used.
Athlete’s foot and toenail fungus are the two most common foot infections caused by fungi. It is important to treat all infections as soon as possible and this holds true for foot fungus infections as well because of the pain and discomfort associated with them. Repeat the treatment thrice a day for 10 days or until you are completely free from the infection. Once you are infection free perform the treatment twice a week to ensure the infection doesn’t return.
The combination of oil and camphor works together to get rid of the fungus causing the infection.
The involved allergens are dust mites, pollens, mold spores, danders, insects, and other miscellaneous allergens.
Ultimately, the diagnosis of CAD is made based upon signalment, typical history, presentation of compatible clinical signs, and the systematic exclusion of all other pruritic skin diseases.
Empiric therapy for sarcoptic mange is often indicated early in the plan for pruritic dogs.
If pruritus is non-seasonal, without exacerbations, cutaneous adverse food reaction, sarcoptic mange, and contact hypersensitivity are differentials. The dermatologist will ensure that there is adequate control of secondary infections as they proceed through diagnostic steps and design the management plan.
I recommend ASIT be incorporated early in the course of disease as a core component of the management plan. The significance of a positive result can only be ascertained once all other causes for the dermatitis have been ruled out.
In the tests, the specificity of the IgE detection reagent is critically important to minimize false positives. Both omega 3 and omega 6 have been recommended; omega 3 for pruritus and omega 6 for the restoration of the cutaneous barrier. Conjunctivitis is often referred to as red eye or pink eye and it is the most common eye disorder seen in cats. Delays in treating serious eye disorders may result in major ocular damage and even blindness in severe cases.
What’s irritating is that flea eggs can remain dormant for over a year and that’s why sometimes when you have treated your home and felt as if it is now fleas free, they appear from nowhere! But how does this Diatomaceous Earth kill fleas? The cell walls of Diatom are made of silica which in turn is a component of glass. Diatomaceous Earth, however, is not so effective in humid environments and also when it is wet.
However, because we are discussing flea control for overall house, here’s a recipe for rosemary powder that you can use anywhere in your home. You can mop your floors with a mixture of essential oils with citronella oil as one of the key ingredients. I also make my own carpet fresh with baking soda cinnamon and clove just added some salt to it and sprinkled my carpets yea.
Professional swimmers and people who expose their naked feet to floors of common washrooms should apply VapoRub to their feet thrice a week to keep fungal infections of the feet at bay. Several breeds are over represented including the Boston terrier, Boxer, Cairn terrier, West Highland White terrier, Scottish Terrier, Fox terrier, Yorkshire terrier, Chinese shar-pei, Cocker spaniel, English bulldog, English and Irish setter, Labrador and Golden retrievers, Pug, and German Shepherd, and miniature schnauzer.
It may appear seasonally in the early years, but develops into a non-seasonal disease in most dogs. Also, we prescribe very strict flea control for all pets in a household with an atopic dog.
Alopecia in CAD is the result of pruritic behaviors of licking, biting, scratching, chewing, rubbing, etc.
Secondary infections with bacteria and yeast should always be treated and controlled, as they are an important contributor to the severity of pruritus in many cases. In addition to possible barrier enhancement, one benefit of topical therapy is mechanical removal of allergens from skin and hair coat. A 50% reduction in pruritus should be considered favorable, as it may permit elimination of corticosteroids or other adjunctive medications. Also, a positive result should be for an allergen present in high quantities at the time of year that the individual patient has exacerbations of skin disease. Negative IDT reactivity was demonstrated in 20% of dogs in a population of dogs with clinical signs of atopy.
The main mechanism is to block H1 receptors in the skin and prevent or reduce the release of histamine.
All the other elements of our management plans are aimed at eliminating the need for corticosteroids all together. Metabolism is inhibited in cases of liver dysfunction or when drugs that suppress the cytochrome p450 system are given.
Reevaluation after 4 -8 weeks while the dog is still receiving treatment is essential to establish a response to therapy. And that’s why you need to be on a regular watch and clean your home frequently once you have eliminated fleas.
The exoskeleton or the hard shell of fleas or such other insects are vulnerable to the sharp edges of microscopic diatoms.
They may even die if the pennyroyal essential oil is licked by them or its leaves are chewed by them. Also let your family members know about this herb and how your are using it so that they do not try to experiment with it in any way.
I am deathly allergic to pesticides so was so happy when I learned about the salt method three years ago, and I have been using it ever since. The owner bombed but didn't realize how bad they were until I moved in and started moving stuff around. Temporary removal of the infected nail can be performed to permit direct application of a topical antifungal.
However, before you rush to a doctor to get treatment for fungal infection of the feet there are many effective home remedies that you can try.
Successful management requires a basic understanding of the complexity of the disease, an accurate diagnosis, control of secondary problems, institution of a comprehensive management plan, and frequent reassessment.
Fleas are a trigger factor for CAD, and flea bite hypersensitivity is often present in combination with CAD.
Light coated breeds may also have salivary staining at body sites that are licked and chewed.
To avoid pollens, avoid outdoor environment when pollen counts are high, keep grass cut short, bathe dog frequently, use air conditioners and change filters often, and wipe the pet down with a wet cloth after outdoor activity. This likely decreases quantity of allergen in contact with skin and likely decreases the amount of percutaneous exposure of allergen through the defective cutaneous barrier. Thus, the dermatologist will review patient history prior to selection of allergens for immunotherapy. A small percentage of dogs with CAD never have positive allergy tests, and this is considered to be equivalent to human intrinsic atopic dermatitis. They modulate leukotriene and prostaglandin synthesis, restore the normal composition of lipids in the skin, and modulate lymphocyte functions. If corticosteroids are part of the plan initially or for flares, they are used strategically and carefully.
Here are some effective home remedies for fleas with which you can not only kill the fleas but can also control their recurrence.
Try to avoid DE from coming in contact of the skin of your pets as this may dry out their skin. However, when you don’t want to kill fleas and just want to repel them, you may like to use pennyroyal. At the first sign of fleas I give the dogs a bath in tea tree oil shampoo and strip the bedding and put it in the dryer if it is newly cleaned, if not I wash it first. Permanent removal of a chronically painful nail, which has not responded to any other treatment, permits the fungal infection to be cured and prevents the return of a deformed nail.
In this section we will give you the best home remedies for treating fungal infections of the feet easily. Some dogs will not have any lesions, and pruritus is the only problem.  The distribution of lesions and pruritus in CAD is characteristic.
They decrease pruritus and inflammation by altering the potency and quantity of mediators formed during inflammation.
Many failures are attributed to the owner decreasing the frequency of administered when there has not yet been a response to therapy.
Common sources include cold water marine oil, evening primrose, borage, and black currant oil. Monitoring for side effects must be scheduled and planned.  At least q 6 months serum biochemistry, CBC, and urine culture are recommended in my practice.
When restarting, I have the owner administer the capsule with a small amount of food until it is tolerated for a few days.
But the only one which belongs to food grade category and not the one used for pool filtration systems.
