Diabetes is on the rise in Australia and the rest of the world and has reached epidemic proportions. Feeling tired and lethargic, always feeling hungry, having cuts that heal slowly, skin infections, blurred vision, gradual weight gain, mood swings, headaches and dizziness. You are more chance of  becoming diabetic if you have a family history of diabetes or if you are over 55 years of age – as the risk increases as we age.
There are so many benefits to strength training: increased muscle strength and power, increased muscle size and endurance, reduction in body fat, increased bone mineral density, increased metabolic rate, lower blood pressure, increased sense of well being and self esteem… do I need to keep going? Strength training programs should be designed by qualified trainers (and supervised where possible) and  and be reviewed regularly so that weights are gradually increased. If you think you know someone who might be at risk of type 2 diabetes, their GP is the best place to start.
Celebrities including Rachel Weisz, Elizabeth Hasselback, Zooey Deschanel and now even Miley Cyrus are going gluten free.
A protein found in grains including wheat, rye and barley, gluten gives elasticity to baked goods, helping them to rise and keep their shape and also resulting in that chewy texture we associate with freshly baked bread. Even if you aren’t diagnosed with Celiac disease, you may have a milder gluten sensitivity or intolerance, which causes symptoms including skin problems, headaches, brain fog and pain. Some experts caution against going gluten free just because it seems that everyone else is doing it. Some health professionals maintain that over 90% of gluten sensitivity (whether Celiac disease or intolerance) is undiagnosed!
In animal studies with pregnant rats, signs of a biotin overdose included a higher risk of miscarriage.
A biotin overdose is rare but is possible if someone takes high doses of the vitamin over a prolonged period of time.
Biotin is an important element for genetic cell division and the metabolism of amino acids and carbohydrates. Medication taken for seizures, as well as dialysis for kidney disease, might cause a deficiency of biotin. Supplements that may lead to a biotin overdose are generally not needed if a healthy diet is consumed.
A recent study used very high doses of biotin (100 to 300 mg--which is 1000 to 3000 mcg) and they treated patients for over six months. I know it is possible to overdose on just about anything, but have never heard of anyone overdosing on biotin. I take a multi vitamin every day that has some biotin in it, but was looking for something to strengthen my nails. They were very soft and I could not get them to grow very long.

I was originally worried about a biotin overdose, but from reading article I think I need to see my doctor about a biotin deficiency.
I have read that it is actually pretty rare to overdose on biotin for those that are healthy. You are also at risk if you are over 45 years of age and are overweight or have high blood pressure or you are over 35 years of age and are from an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, or Pacific Island, Indian subcontinent or Chinese cultural background. Particularly for people with diabetes, strength training and increased muscle mass means more uptake of insulin into the muscle, (and therefore less glucose floating around in the bloodstream causing trouble.) Exercise increases the amount of insulin receptors released and an increase in muscle cells from strength training means more opportunities for insulin to bind to those receptors and move glucose from the blood into the cells. Contrary to the popular belief that exercise should be light, research shows that type 2 diabetics, with no other contraindications, will experience the most benefit from moderate to hard weight training sessions. They maintain that vitamin and mineral deficiencies will develop if your alternate diet isn’t well planned. A doctor who practices preventive cardiology in Wisconsin, Davis contends that it’s not just gluten, but wheat itself that is detrimental to health.  Modern day wheat has been hybridized to create a grain that spikes blood sugar higher than a Snickers bar, plays havoc with the intestinal system and with the brain, resulting in a host of health problems including obesity, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis.
If you think that you may be one of those individuals you may want to ask your doctor to test for Celiac disease. Possible signs of a biotin overdose include slower release of insulin, skin rash, lower vitamin C and vitamin B6 levels, and higher blood sugar levels. It converts glucose and fatty acids into energy, and prevents the kidneys and liver from storing excess fat.
Signs of too little vitamin B7 include loss of appetite, hair and nail problems, lethargy, or hallucinations, but deficiencies occur infrequently.
The research found that the placentas of the animals also shrank with high doses of biotin, but a deficiency of biotin caused birth defects.
I looked them up online and found that they contained high doses of biotin, and one of the side effects for people who aren't used to getting it through supplements is increased dream activity. Some studies have shown that even taking 30 times the recommended daily amount have been just fine.
Without going into too much detail, diabetes is essentially a condition where the body is not able to regulate its blood glucose levels.
Or that you may gain weight, choosing to fill up on gluten-free versions of breads, cakes and cookies that are loaded with starches, sugar and fat. If tests come back negative, consider an elimination diet to help determine if you have a sensitivity. Biotin, which is vitamin B7, also called vitamin H, is water soluble, meaning the body excretes what it doesn’t use through urine.
Physicians might advise pregnant women to take between 30-35 mcg daily, preferably through diet.

These properties lead some people to believe that biotin supplements can reduce high cholesterol and help those with diabetes. Smoking has been linked to depletion of biotin, and pregnant women might need additional supplements of the vitamin if their doctors recommend it.
There are no known side effects of biotin overdose in humans because human trials have not been done.
But I don’t want to freak anyone out here, what I do want to talk about is how weight training can help with management of diabetes. In its most severe form, individuals who are gluten sensitive develop Celiac disease, an immune disorder that can result in bloating, diarrhea, fatigue and a host of other health problems including osteoporosis and internal bleeding.
While he holds the wheat grain responsible as the biggest culprit, he cautions that the consumption of all grains are associated with adverse health effects. Give up all gluten containing products (anything with wheat, rye or barley) for a few weeks and gradually reintroduce them to see if you experience any side effects. If you’re a baker, then the internet is loaded with sites that will help you create the perfect flour blend for your favorite treats. I guess I will have to see my doctor about getting a supplement if it is indeed a loss of biotin that is causing my itchy scalp and hair loss. People with this kind of diabetes can suffer from upset insulin levels and a doctor may have to adjust their insulin intake levels if they are taking biotin. Biotin is usually taken for those that have a specific deficiency. Glucose (sugar) is carried in the blood and uses a hormone called insulin (produced by the pancreas) to convert into energy for use by the cells of our muscles. However, if you’re giving up gluten to feel better, the hope is that you’ll steer towards healthier choices including more fresh vegetables, fruits and lean proteins. For this reason, Davis recommends minimizing grain consumption and loading up on vegetables and lean protein instead.
In people with diabetes insulin is no longer produced, or not produced in enough amounts so the glucose remains in the blood stream.
If that’s the case, you’ll get more than your fair share of the recommended daily allowances of essential nutrients, including plenty of fiber. Loaded with sugar, it isn’t always the healthiest option especially if consumed in large quantities.
