Rebecca Klaper studies emerging contaminants in freshwater systems, including the residuals of pharmaceuticals in wastewater.
A medication commonly taken for Type II diabetes, which is being found in freshwater systems worldwide, has been shown to cause intersex in fish -male fish that produce eggs. A study by Rebecca Klaper at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee determined exposure to the diabetes medicine metformin causes physical changes in male fish exposed to doses similar to the amount in wastewater effluent. In addition to intersex conditions, fish exposed to metformin were smaller in size than those not exposed, said Klaper, a professor in UWM's School of Freshwater Sciences. The study, co-authored by Nicholas Niemuth, a researcher in Klaper's lab, was recently published in the journal Chemosphere. Because intersex fish are particularly prevalent downstream from wastewater treatment plants, many studies have investigated the effect of hormones from birth control pills, Klaper said. Initially, the results of her study seemed surprising since metformin is not a hormone and it targets blood sugar regulation.
But Klaper said it is also prescribed to women with a common hormonal disease called polycystic ovary syndrome. Of the chemicals she has detected in water samples collected from Lake Michigan, metformin stands out, Klaper said.
The prevalence of the chemical in samples led Klaper to investigate what effects the medication may have in the environment. In a previous study, she exposed mature fish to metformin, and although there were no physical changes, she found the genes related to hormones for egg production were being expressed in males as well as females - an indication of endocrine disruption. For the current study, the researchers monitored fish that had continuous exposure to metformin from birth to adulthood.
Pharmaceuticals, caffeine and items such as toothpaste additives have been found farther out in the Great Lakes than ever before, according to a new study that also raises concerns about their levels. Researchers have found that pharmaceuticals and personal-care byproducts persist at low levels miles from sewage discharge pipes in Lake Michigan. A new study could explain why DNA and not RNA, its older chemical cousin, is the main repository of genetic information.
Migratory birds often use warm, rising atmospheric currents to gain height with little energy expenditure when flying over long distances.
There are plenty of things that make it possible for humans to live in large groups and pack into cities.
People who live with Type 1 diabetes suffer from an autoimmune disease, where the body has attacked the beta cells in the pancreas.
Possession of small quantities of the drug would become a non-arrestable, ticketable infraction in Jamaica resulting in a fine, Golding said.
He added that the government would propose a bill in the Jamaican Parliament soon that will expunge the criminal records of people convicted for possession of small amounts of the drug, which is grown widely across Jamaica.
Anyone ticketed will be given 30 days to pay the fine, failure of which will result in it becoming a minor offense, resulting in the offender doing court-ordered community service. It is a skin disorder characterized by the presence of dark spots and patches on the surface of the skin.
Persons with family history of allergic disorder like asthma and atopic dermatitis are prone to get nummular eczema. People who live in stressful lifestyle and working in great variations of temperature are likely to get this eczema. Skin biopsy is done for diagnosing the disease after physically examining the body for lesions and dry patches. Avoid working in stressful environment and places in which there is more chance for contacting irritants.
Symptoms of gout in the foot are due to the formation of uric acid crystals in the body which eventually store themselves in the person’s toes, ankles or into the foot as a whole.
Gout is primarily caused by too much uric acid present in the blood, or medically known as hyperuricemia.

These are the common causes of gout, and because of these, symptoms of gout in the foot such as tingling, pain, tenderness, swelling and redness would develop. Symptoms of gout in the foot may really impede our ability to do our normal day to day activities. This website is purely for information purpose and gives information that is general in nature.
This post is an overview on calcium channel blockers, in this first part we will discuss their classification, mechanism of action as well as clinical indications. Phenilalkylamines: verapamil is the only drug in this group, it binds to the V binding site. Dihydropyridines: the prototype agent in this group is nifedipine, a first generation dihydropyridine that binds to the N binding site. Calcium channel antagonists block the inward movement of calcium by binding to the L-type calcium channels in the heart and in smooth muscle of the peripheral vasculature. Dihydropiridines have minimal effect on cardiac conduction or heart rate, while they have potent actions as arteriolar vasodilators. On the other hand, verapamil and diltiazem slow AV conduction and decrease SA node automaticity, they also decrease heart rate. CCB’s  effectiveness in the treatment of hypertension is  related to a decrease in peripheral resistance accompanied by increases in cardiac index. CCB are also useful in the treatment of hypertensive patients with comorbidities such as: asthma, diabetes, angina, ond or peripheral vascular disease. Calcium channel blockers act as coronary vasodilators, producing variable and dose-dependent reductions in myocardial oxygen demand, contractility, and arterial pressure. In the presence of heart failure, the use of calcium channel blockers can cause further worsening of heart failure as a result of their negative inotropic effect.
Verapamil and diltiazem are class IV antiarrhythmics, according to Vaughan and Williams’ classification of antiarrhythmic drugs. So, using these highly-scientific and time-tested methodologies, which kind of medicine would you like to practice?
This is a stage that happened to be easy for me, but at which many students make very bad choices. The classic diseases of the rich would be the presbydysaestheticoses, including facial keratoses, generalized loss of skin turgor, and sagging boobs. I think we need a second chart for people already in internal medicine to decide about their sub-specialty.
But if I’m really going to guess, I need at least one further piece of information: what are your favorite and least favorite procedures?
Dianne may be right– but I dunno, our MarkH just might be crazy enough to be an ER doc!
The research in her lab indicates metformin could be a potential endocrine disruptor - a chemical that confuses the body's complicated hormonal messaging system, interrupting a range of normal activities, including reproduction. The next step is to determine the corresponding changes in the genome, which Klaper is doing at UWM's Great Lakes Genomic Center. These relate to possession of small quantities of ganja for personal use, the smoking of ganja in private places and the use of ganja for medical-medicinal purposes,” he said.

The change means that a person cannot be arrested if he has in his possession up to 57 grams (2 ounces) of ganja in a public space. According to Golding, possession of ganja for religious or therapeutic purposes as prescribed by a registered medical practitioner, or for scientific research by an accredited institution, will also be decriminalized. Certain factors from environment like workplaces in which there is constant exposure to strong chemicals and irritant materials also increase the risk of this disorder. Usually, the person feels a tingling sensation and tenderness that start on the toes and make their way up the entire foot.
The parents may have a defective metabolism of the uric acid which causes its buildup in the system. You should stay away from purine rich foods such as sardines, shellfish, scallops, beans, and too much red meat, to name a few. In order to battle this inconvenience, taking the extra steps to prevent or manage this disease would greatly help in overcoming the painful symptoms. Please contact your health care provider for specialized medical advice, diagnosis and treatment. Diltiazem is used in the treatment of variant angina because of its coronary antispasmodic properties. These combined pharmacologic effects are advantageous and make these agents as effective as beta blockers in the treatment of angina pectoris.

Lucky for me the fine folks at the Australian Defence Force payed my way through med school (with a shiny 90K salary on top of having no debts) So Military Medicine it was for me. Are you going to tell us or just let this thread drift off the page with the question unanswered?
These lesions gradually start becoming crusty and ooze out fluids spreading more infection. Also do not wash or take bath very often, since it may cause dryness worsening the problem.
Due to the inflammation, the foot would look red and somewhat shiny, and feels slightly painful at first and becomes severe if unattended. They also decrease cardiac contractility (negative inotropic effect) ,automaticity at the SA node and conduction at the AV node.
They are indicated when beta blockers are contraindicated, poorly tolerated, or ineffective.
Their ability to inhibit the AV node is employed in the management of supraventricular tachyarrhythmias, such as: atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter and paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia. They are indicated when beta blockers are contraindicated, poorly tolerated, or ineffective. Would you tell a developmentally delayed child she could think her way out of her disability or tell a blind man all he has to do is open his eyes?Charlatans try to sell "cures" to Type 2 diabetics, who want to perpetuate the myth that a poor diet caused the illness, when the cause is really a genetic disorder. Finally, this story has nothing to do with Big Pharma. Uruguay recently became the latest country to legalize marijuana use, joining several countries in Europe as well as the U.S. There may be painful itching on the affected area and the skin may become scaly with reddish color. However, you just have to find ways to manage the pain and tenderness before they get worse.
