Acute myocardial infarction (AMI), commonly known as a heart attack, is the interruption of blood supply to part of the heart, causing some heart muscle cells to die.
The most common symptom of a heart attack in both men and women is some type of pain, pressure or discomfort in the chest. These signs and symptoms are more subtle than the obvious crushing chest pain often associated with heart attacks.
Many women tend to show up in emergency rooms after much heart damage has already occurred, because their symptoms are not those typically associated with a heart attack. Although the traditional risk factors for coronary artery disease — such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and obesity — affect women and men, other factors may play a bigger role in the development of heart disease in women. Metabolic syndrome — a combination of fat around your abdomen, high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high triglycerides — has a greater impact on women than on men. Low levels of estrogen after menopause pose a significant risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease in the smaller blood vessels (small vessel heart disease).
The diagnosis of myocardial infarction can be made after assessing patient's complaints and physical status. A chest radiograph and routine blood tests may indicate complications or precipitating causes and are often performed upon arrival to an emergency department.
The WHO criteria were refined in 2000 to give more prominence to cardiac biomarkers.[75] According to the new guidelines, a cardiac troponin rise accompanied by either typical symptoms, pathological Q waves, ST elevation or depression, or coronary intervention is diagnostic of MI. While the vast majority of abnormal Q waves are due to myocardial infarction (MI), others can be caused by other cardiac illnesses such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (the result of long-standing high blood pressure) and may simulate anterior or inferior myocardial infarction. An unexpected change such as this on a routine EKG should be evaluauted  with a cardiology consultation, a stress ECHO, and probably a CTCA Scan.
Treatment aims to salvage as much heart muscle as quickly as possible ("time is muscle"), preserve heart function and to prevent complications such as heart failure. If the EKG confirms changes suggestive of a heart attack, medication is injected that dissolves blood clots obstructing the coronary arteries, or a Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) may be performed in STEMI, but to be effective requires to be performed in a very limited time span. If the ECG does not show typical changes, the term "non-ST segment elevation ACS" is applied. It is important to note that individuals with diabetes, women, and the elderly mayexperience “silent” heart attacks in which case they don’t experience the classic chest discomfort.  These individuals may experience only new onset shortness of breath, or some of the other milder symptoms as listed.

People who are trying to quit smoking often become discouraged when they do not succeed at first.
See your health care provider if you wish to stop smoking, or have already done so and are having withdrawal symptoms. So my parents have always told me that our ancestors came over on a boat from Scotland and England.
Digging a little deeper into my mitochondrial DNA, I can see that my Maternal Line stems from Haplogroup H.
About 21,000 years ago an intensification of Ice Age conditions blanketed much of Eurasia with mile-thick glaciers and squeezed people into a handful of ice-free refuges in Iberia, Italy, the Balkans and the Caucasus. So all this is pretty cool to know, but as usual, I want to know what I can learn from this new information. So if I go back to what foods were available to my ancestors in Northern Europe, I would find lots of wild game and fresh fish.

As I’ve said before, it takes some trial and error to dial in the right diet for you.

It is most commonly due to occlusion (blockage) of a coronary artery following the rupture of a vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque, which is an unstable collection of lipids (fatty acids) and white blood cells (especially macrophages) in the wall of an artery.
This may be because women tend to have blockages not only in their main arteries, but also in the smaller arteries that supply blood to the heart — a condition called small vessel heart disease. ECG changes, coronary angiogram and levels of cardiac markers help to confirm the diagnosis. New regional wall motion abnormalities on an echocardiogram are also suggestive of a myocardial infarction.
Oxygen, aspirin, and nitroglycerin (NTG) are used routinely as an initial therapy, often first given in the ambulance.

Once they received my specimen, they did a full DNA analysis and provided me with ancestry-related genetic reports as well as tons of raw genetic data.
My ancestors originated about 40,000 years ago in the Near East, where favorable climate conditions allowed them to flourish. Several branches of Haplogroup H arose during that time, and after the glaciers began receding about 15,000 years ago most of them played a prominent role in the repopulation of the continent. R1b1b2 is the most common Haplogroup in western Europe, where it is found in more than 50% of men. I’ve recently read some research showing that the best diet for you might stem from what your ancestors ate.
We all know that how and what you eat is a significant factor for diseases, but the degree to which diet influences how likely you are to get a given disease could depend on your genetics.
But the more information that you have to help build that diet, the more likely you are to get it right.

The resulting ischemia (restriction in blood supply) and oxygen shortage, if left untreated for a sufficient period of time, can cause damage or death (infarction) of heart muscle tissue (myocardium).
ECG gives valuable clues to identify the site of myocardial damage while coronary angiogram allows visualization of narrowing or obstructions in the heart vessels.[70] At autopsy, a pathologist can diagnose a myocardial infarction based on anatomopathological findings. The EKG lead above the necrotic tissue looks through a window of dead muscle tissue right into the heart cavity, causing a negative Q-wave.
The accepted management of unstable angina and acute coronary syndrome is treatment with medications alone.
People who smoked the longest or smoked a greater number of cigarettes each day are more likely to have withdrawal symptoms.
Tobacco and related chemicals can increase your risk of serious health problems such as cancer, lung disease, and heart attack.
About 10,000 years later they spread westward all the way to the Atlantic coast of Europe and east into central Asia as far as the Altay Mountains. Ancient representatives of this Haplogroup were among the first people to repopulate the western part of Europe after the Ice Age ended about 12,000 years ago.

There are many intriguing theories about what traits the amount of Neanderthal DNA may have imparted on modern humans, but we don’t know yet if having a little more than average Neanderthal DNA could explain why someone is extra brawny, short or boorish. I have no doubt that in the near future, scientists and nutritionists will be able to match someone’s recommended diet to their unique genetic make-up. It is estimated that 10 to 20% of the population has varicose veins with the incidence being higher in women.
Quitting tobacco is hard if you are trying to do it alone. To be successful, you must really want to quit. I’ve been sitting on my results for a few weeks now, so I thought I would take a few minutes to tell you about my ancestry-related reports. So it looks like my Mom’s side of the family can be traced back to the Nordic countries of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
In the process the Haplogroup differentiated into even more distinct groups that can trace the details of the post-Ice Age migrations. This is thought to be due to the effects of progesterone, which inhibits smooth muscle contraction and allows dilatation of the subcutaneous veins.
Although the FDA is now preventing 23andMe from providing users health-related reports, I was able to find several websites that had downloadable apps that would allow me to upload all of my raw data from 23andMe.
A vegetarian diet might result for great health for some people, while eating a diet of high fat and protein may be best for someone else. Men are not immune to this condition, however, constituting approximately 30% of the patients. I can see literally every strain of DNA that I have and how those could play a role in my current and future health….truly amazing stuff! From what I can gather, my ancestor’s probably ate a diet consisting of 50-60% fat, 20-30% carbs and 20-30% protein. Smokeless tobacco products are either placed in the mouth, cheek, or lip and sucked or chewed on, or placed in the nasal passage. Treatment is required for varicose veins only when they cause symptoms or when complications arise.
The nicotine in these products is absorbed at the same rate as smoking tobacco, and addiction is still very strong.
These programs are offered by hospitals, health departments, community centers, work sites, and national organizations. Nicotine replacement therapy may also be helpful. Occasionally, varicose veins may be complicated by manifestations of chronic venous insufficiency such as leg swelling, skin discolouration, eczema, induration, venous ulcers and varicose vein rupture. It involves the use of products that provide low doses of nicotine, but none of the toxins found in smoke. Although varicose vein rupture and bleeding is an uncommon manifestation of varicose veins, massive bleeding and even fatal cases have been reported. The goal is to relieve cravings for nicotine and ease your withdrawal symptoms. Health experts warn that e-cigarettes are not a replacement therapy for cigarette smoking.
