Despite current medical evidence, there are many who believe that type 1 diabetes can be managed effectively without insulin, using alternative therapies. In 2008, The Incurables, a U.S reality television series about people who overcome series medical conditions, aired an episode about a boy called Zachary Swerdlow who suffers from type 1 diabetes.
Zachary’s parents, who prefer homeopathic solutions to Western medication, began investigating alternative treatments shortly after his diagnosis. They consulted a natural pharmacist, Robert Kress, who believed that Zachary’s diabetes was caused by infections and parasites in the body, placing his internal organs under strain. Zachary was also taken to Alan Maynard, a chiropractor who informed the family that the vertebrae in Zachary’s spine responsible for the pancreas, were significantly out of alignment. While Zachary’s parents believed that when Zachary swam in a salt water pool, it would have the most significant effect on lowering his blood sugar. Using the above methods, amongst others, Zachary’s parents claim that he no longer requires insulin.
Whilst it cannot be denied that these different therapies may have helped to improve Zachary’s blood glucose control, they cannot be suggested as a cure for type 1 diabetes. It is important to note the difference between simply surviving and actively ensuring that blood glucose levels are kept in the target range as far as possible to avoid life-threatening long-term complications. It is well-documented that a healthy diet and exercise can assist in regulating blood glucose. It is more than likely that Zachary was experiencing such a honeymoon phase and therefore was able to manage his blood glucose without insulin. While alternative remedies should not replace insulin therapy, they may assist as part of an integrative approach to managing type 1 diabetes. Health24 spoke to Dr Shaun Harper, registered chiropractor at West End Chiropractic in Pinelands, Cape Town about his opinion on the use of chiropractic treatment in the management of the condition. A case study published in the November 2011 edition of the Journal of Paediatric, Maternal & Family Health, documents a case of a 4 year old child, who had very good results stabilising her blood sugar through chiropractic treatment. In the case mentioned above, it was found that there were vertebral subluxations (restrictions) at the spinal level that supplied the pancreas. It is important to remember that type 1 diabetes is a serious condition and insulin therapy should be continued according to your specific needs in consultation with your doctor. Few health problems pose a greater threat to patients than obesity and its related ailments. As our waistlines expand, so too do the number of medical problems caused by excess body weight. New obesity treatment guidelines will give doctors a helping hand. The American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology and Obesity Society recently developed a set of guidelines to help healthcare providers tailor weight loss treatments to adult patients affected by overweight or obesity. The guidelines recommend screening for body mass index at each annual visit, or more often if appropriate, and using the screening results to engage patients in a discussion about their weight and its impact on their overall health. Many doctors find that having the conversation with patients about their need to drop pounds can be difficult. The new obesity guidelines also recommend that doctors work with patients to develop a weight loss plan. His recommendations are in line with the new obesity guidelines, and with a study just published in the journal Obesity. There’s no shortage of diets to choose from, yet no one diet program is better than another when it comes to losing weight, Ryan says.
Making lasting change, as the Look AHEAD trial demonstrated, depends on patients engaging in a comprehensive lifestyle program that helps them both drop weight and maintain that weight loss. In fact, the new obesity guidelines recommend patients work with trained healthcare professionals, such as a registered dietitian, behavioral psychologist or other trained weight loss counselor. Although it has no obesity-specific program, the National Commission on Quality Assurance (NCQA) offers guidelines for physicians practicing in the Patient-Centered Medical Home model that support the care the obesity guidelines indicate are required for patients who are overweight or obese. These standards help guide physicians in developing or enhancing a medical practice infrastructure that can help patients with chronic disease, including those who are obese. For example, prioritizing the identification of patient populations, including those in need of weight counseling, is a goal of both the obesity guidelines and NCQA’s PCMH standards, and one that can be achieved in part with the effective use of electronic health records. Providing tools for lifestyle modification is also something NCQA evaluates in its reviews. With new guidelines in place to create more of a road map based on solid scientific evidence, the hope is that doctors will be better able to provide their patients with the help they need to make lasting change in their weight and their health.

Weight-loss surgery, medically known as bariatric surgery, produces weight loss by restricting food intake and, in some cases, interfering with nutrition through malabsorption. There are four types of operations that are commonly offered in the United States: adjustable gastric band (AGB), Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB), biliopancreatic diversion with a duodenal switch (BPD-DS), and vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG). Adjustable Gastric Band (AGB) (sometimes called lap-band surgery)works primarily by decreasing food intake. Jessi Colter and Shooter Jennings, the wife and son of the late country music legend Waylon Jennings, are working with the Phoenix-based Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) on a charitable initiative to help end diabetes. Jennings, who lived much of his storied career in Arizona, died in 2002 at age 64 from complications of diabetes.
Jessi Colter is sending a thank you letter to those contributing to this new fund, which should lead to better treatments and better quality of life for the nation’s nearly 26 million diabetics. Waylon Jennings was truly one-of-a-kind.  Often thought of as an “outlaw” and a mentor to a new generation of country and rock acts inspired by his spirit and individualism, he was, above all, someone who stood strong in the face of adversity. We now have a chance to honor the man who loved his country, his family and cared so much for his community, by helping to speed the development of new treatments for those suffering from this terrible disease. The new Waylon Jennings Research Fund at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) will spur innovative research into finding better ways to treat diabetes, and be a fitting tribute to his life and musical legacy. The Diabetes Media Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit media organization devoted to informing, educating, and generating community around living a healthy life with diabetes. Despite Kress’s beliefs, it is important to note that the exact cause of type 1 diabetes is not yet fully understood.
Kress believed that this would reduce the strain on Zachary’s “overworked” pancreas, enabling it to function better.
The condition can be managed through the control of blood glucose with a combination of insulin therapy, diet and exercise. Wayne May, an endocrinologist who also runs the DiabetesLife Clinic at The Kingsbury and Claremont Life hospitals in Cape Town.
May explains that after a diagnosis of type 1 diabetes is made, a patient can experience a period where their pancreas is still producing some insulin. The better levels experienced after swimming can be attributed to the fact that Zachary was exercising. Chiropractic adjustments have been shown to reduce subluxations and boost the coordinated responses of the nervous system. So by adjusting the restricted levels and thereby freeing the joint, the nerve supply was no longer hampered, and the body was allowed to function normally and coordinate the endocrine system of the pancreas.
Zachary’s exact blood glucose levels were not discussed in the episode, making it difficult to assess whether or not these methods really worked or whether he was actually poorly controlled and being placed at risk of long-term complications. You cannot get medical costs under control as long as we have these rising rates of obesity,” says Donna Ryan, MD, professor emeritus at Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University Health System, and previous past president of The Obesity Society. The guidelines are the result of a systematic review of the latest scientific evidence from 133 research studies on the risks of obesity and the benefits of weight loss. But with the right approach most people are willing to listen, says Adam Tsai, MD, MSCE, a practicing physician with Kaiser Permanente Colorado and chair of The Obesity Society’s public affairs committee.

It found that diet and exercise alone enabled half of participants with type 2 diabetes to maintain a 5% loss of body weight over an eight-year period through intensive lifestyle intervention for weight management that included diet and exercise.
Food and Drug Administration has approved two drugs for long-term treatment of overweight and obesity. Adding to the challenges associated with treating obesity is the environment in which most independent physicians practice today. Hawkins says the organization looks to see that doctors are providing patients with the tools they need, for example, to log how frequently they exercise and their daily calorie intake.

Food intake is limited by placing a small bracelet-like band around the top of the stomach to produce a small pouch about the size of a thumb (about one ounce, a normal stomach can hold about 3 pints of food). His “kicking down the doors” style of music will infuse TGen’s new Waylon Fund for Diabetes Research.
Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given its approval for the Dexcom G4 PLATINUM Professional continuous glucose monitoring system (CGM).
With minimal training and setup time, patients are placed on a professional CGM for a period lasting seven days.
He was also advised to apply regular mudpacks to the areas of the abdomen in which his kidneys are located. This improvement in type I diabetes management is most likely a result of better cellular communication. The goal of the guidelines was to provide recommendations as to who needs to lose weight and  give physicians the weight loss techniques that have been proven to work to help patients lose weight, Ryan says. Called the Look AHEAD trial, it is the largest and longest randomized controlled trial of behavioral intervention for weight loss. Still, for people looking both to lose weight and manage particular health conditions, some diets may be better than others.
They are phentermine and topiramate extended-release (brand name Qsymia), and lorcaserin HCI, marketed under the brand name Belviq.
A 15-minute office visit hardly leaves enough time for the range of medical issues with which patients present, and few physicians have the training to address the full spectrum of patient needs. Are physicians providing referrals to community resources and counseling to help them adopt healthy behaviors?
BMI is calculated from a person’s weight and height and provides a reasonable indicator of body fatness and weight categories that may lead to health problems. Patients who undergo bariatric surgery must also commit to a lifetime of healthy eating and regular physical activity. The outlet size is controlled by a circular balloon inside the band that can be inflated or deflated with saline solution to meet the needs of the patient. The Dexcom G4 PLATINUM Professional is the only professional-version CGM that offers real-time, unblinded feedback allowing the patient to experience the full benefits of real-time CGM, while providing the doctor with an opportunity to review glucose data retrospectively with the patient to make therapeutic treatment recommendations. During that time, dynamic and comprehensive data is collected and can be shared with the patient, which aids in their understanding of the impact between behavior and glucose activity. These healthy habits help ensure that the weight loss from surgery is successfully maintained. Clinicians can use the insights gained from a professional CGM session to adjust therapy and to educate and motivate patients to modify their behavior after viewing the effects that specific foods, exercise, stress, and medications have on their glucose levels.
News & World Report recently named the DASH diet as the best overall diet, and the top choice for people with high blood pressure, an assessment both Tsai and Ryan agree with. Eisai, one of the manufacturers of Belviq, reports that 50% of insured commercial lives can now have access to its drug.
Current professional CGMs offer only retrospective, blinded information but with the Dexcom G4 PLATINUM Professional system, physicians can help coach their patients to better outcomes through real-time visibility of dynamic glucose changes as they occur.
