As regular readers of our restaurant reviews are undoubtedly aware, we're not vegans, or vegetarians, preferring an omnivoric approach to our eating. Also good was the Green Bean Cafe's vegan Special Grilled Cheese, made with Diaya brand soy-free, dairy-free cheddar, which tastes enough like the real thing to keep us happy, though the texture, once melted, was perhaps a bit more mucus-y than ideal.

The Experience: The environment itself is clean, peaceful, and that of an upscale restaurant with a touch of at-home rustic. Be sure to check out Candle Cafe in NYC and pick up a copy of their cookbook to learn more about vegan cuisine at home. Vegan-friendly restaurants are quietly expanding through New York City, on top of long-standing luncheonettes and temple canteens.
The Blossom family of organic vegan restaurants began with their flagship restaurant in Chelsea in 2005. V-Note is only a few blocks away from Candle Cafe and Candle 79, which poses a little competition on the UES for Vegan restaurants. Potato Salad: Small Chunks of Potato Salad, Shitake Mushrooms, with fresh herbs mixed together to form a delicious side. Seitan Quarter Pounder with a Side Salad: House Made Seitan Burger with Pickles, Tomatoes, Onions, Cheese and V-Note Special Sauce.


That said, we love any sort of food that tastes good, so when several of our Upper East Side friends recommended the NYC vegetarian restaurant Green Bean Cafe (they have lots of strictly vegan items on the menu, too), we decided to check it out this week, and had a terrific supper.
The menu consists of mouth watering tofu, seitan, tempeh, and creative vegetable options served up with Asian and Hispanic-influenced sauces and seasonings. Not only do they use local organic food as much as possible, but they also maintain their restaurant using eco-friendly techniques. I came into V-Note expecting to compare it to the Candle Restaurants…but I have to say that I find each restaurant to be unique in its own way, although the prices and portion sizes are similar. If you’re looking for a good healthy vegan bite in NYC, this is the place you’ll want to visit.
