CyclingWith a thriving bike culture and a dizzying mix of bike-friendly terrain, the best way to see Victoria is on two wheels. Designated bike lanes across the city make riding an easy and safe experience for locals and travelers alike.
On showThe road bike and mountain bike owned by Cadel Evans are on show in the exhibition Freewheeling: Cycling in Australia. Two bicycles owned by champion Australian cyclist Cadel Evans help to tell a story of achievement on cycling's world stage. Riding a Ridley Helium road bike, and wearing the yellow jersey, Cadel Evans descends amid the peloton during Stage 12 of the 2008 Tour de France from Lavelanet to Narbonne. Cadel Evans rode this Ridley 'Helium' road bike during the 2008 Tour de France, the legendary three-week stage race held every July.
Cadel Evans' success in France was part of a long tradition of Australian cyclists riding in Europe for professional teams. Over the next century, 45 Australians competed in the tour, including some of Australia's mightiest cycling talents, from Sir Hubert Opperman in 1928 and 1931, to Russell Mockridge in 1955 and Don Allan in 1974 and 1975. Cadel Evans was a champion mountain bike rider long before he joined the professional European road racing fraternity. Physiological tests while at the Australian Institute of Sport revealed that Evans possessed the rare combination of an unusually high lung volume and the capacity to absorb more oxygen from each breath than 99.9 per cent of the population. Affectionately known as 'The Lung', Evans became a dominant force in cross-country mountain biking, winning the 1998 and 1999 world cups. His cycling career started in 1995 as a scholarship holder in the Australian Institute of Sport’s mountain bike program.
Evans was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for his service to cycling and the community in June 2013.
The National Museum of Australia wishes to thank Jason Bakker (Director of Signature Sport and Cadel Evans' manager), Josh Boyd (Echelon Sports), Warren Meade (Bicycle Passion), Trevor Nix (The Cyclery) and Robbie McEwen (Robbie McEwen Cycling) for their assistance in acquiring these two bicycles.
We've had a lot of great feedback following the release of our Kids Road Bike range late last year.
The guys over at BNA are cycling enthusiasts and we knew our bike was going to be put in the hands of a kid, and a parent, who knew Road Bikes inside out.

David goes on to make a really good point about the cost of kids bikes: "Good bikes are expensive, and I'm always looking for options, because I don't want my kids to ride crap. The Great Ocean Road and surrounding areas has a wide array of courses and facilities for cyclists - whether you're a road cyclist, love the energy of mountain biking or are searching for a cruisy leisure ride.
The Great Ocean Road region features some of the best mountain bike trails in Victoria, with Anglesea and Forrest being the hub of activity.
Arguably, the Great Ocean Road region has some of the most unique and picturesque leisure cycling tracks in Victoria - whichever destination you are chosing to explore! You can ride straight from the front door to the world famous Great Ocean Road or the surrounding mountain bike trails in the Great Otway National Park. The second, less-taxing section, follows the Benwerrin-Mt Sabine Road through the tall Otways forest. Running between Colac and Beech Forest, the trail traverses an railway line, rainforest, creeks, streams and open farmland. Cycling is a great way to explore the gorgeous coastal and hinterland scenery around Torquay. Zip down to Otway Fly for the ultimate Treetop Adventure this Autumn and take advantage of this exclusive offer. A Ridley 'Helium' road cycle and a Cannondale CAAD 4 hardtail mountain bike ridden by the champion cyclist are part of the National Museum of Australia's collection.
Victorian cyclists Iddo 'Snowy' Munro and Duncan 'Don' Kirkham rode the 1914 Tour de France, becoming the first Australian and, in fact, the first native English speakers to participate.
With an uninterrupted path of single-track it can seem like you’re floating through a forest.

So we were super happy when the Bicycles Network Australia (BNA) wanted to be the first to do an official review of the 620R - our road bike for kids aged 10 to 14 years old. And their review has not disappointed - they provide a really honest and open review giving great insight into what parents and kids look for in a road bike - and a must-read for any parent considering buying a performance bike for kids. The 's' (short reach) version of their brifters is designed for small hands and these are a popular choice on serious kids racing bikes for those in the know.
There's a variety of cycle tracks in the region for cyclists of all skills, fitness levels and ages.
A permit is required for horse riders to ride in the National Park and Parks Victoria staff can assist you with this. His tour win crowned an impressive list of successes since he had turned professional 10 years early, which included winning the 2009 World Road Championships in Switzerland.
