This was the advice Swami Vivekananda gave to a junior monk when he complained about restless meditations. Swami Vivekananda instructs us to develop the attitude that all activity, work, and service is the worship of God. Swami Vivekananda knew what he was doing when he gave his lectures on karma yoga to audiences in the United States in the late 1800′s. Our personal yoga and meditation practices can be enriched beyond comprehension once we learn to serve the Living God within us and within our fellow man. This is a collection of the writings and talks of Swami Vivekananda on the theory and practice of meditation. Ramakrishna found his disciple Narendranath (pre-monastic name of Vivekananda) a dhyana-siddha (expert in meditation). One evening Narendra and I were meditating under a mango tree at the Cossipore garden house. In this post we'll make a collection of Swami Vivekananda's quotes, comments, and opinions on meditation (dhyana). Swami Vivekananda stressed on practising meditation as it brings one closer to another and increases the power of mind. Self-realization is to be attained by renunciation, by meditation—renunciation of all the senses, cutting the knots, the chains that bind us down to matter. When, by the previous preparations, it becomes strong and controlled, and has the power of finer perception, the mind should be employed in meditation. Meditation consists in this practice [of dissolving every thing into the ultimate Reality — spirit]. Similarly, when the devotee Surendra told Sri Ramakrishna, Swami Vivekananda’s guru, that his meditations on the Divine Mother were not successful, Sri Ramakrishna stressed the importance of balancing meditation and contemplation, on the one hand, with the practice of ritual worship, pilgrimage, and service to living beings, on the other hand. For years I have been a student of yoga and meditation, but it was not until recently that I realized that my own spiritual practice was unbalanced.

In their enthusiasm, some devotees want to spend day and night in meditation and contemplation. In one’s enthusiasm to perform good works, one must not allow the pressure of work to be an excuse to limit one’s meditations.
To develop true compassionate service, says Fox, we must develop a balance between introvert meditation and extrovert meditation. As we constantly strive to perform true service with the right balance of meditation, compassion, unselfish action, self-surrender, self-sacrifice, worship, and love, we must keep in mind that we are God’s servants, doing His work. It doesn't merely state practical ways of meditation, but explains the philosophy behind it and ultimate goal of meditation.
This meditation must begin with gross objects and slowly rise to finer and finer, until it becomes objectless. You go through all these processes purification of the elements — making the one melt the other, that into the next higher, that into mind, that into spirit, and then you are spirit. Prayers, ceremonials, and all the other forms of worship are simply kindergartens of meditation.
Indeed, both Sri Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda emphasized repeatedly that in these times the traditional vow of personal liberation through meditation only is not enough to realize God; one must also take the vow of service to others to experience God fully. I was placing too much emphasis on my own daily meditations and yoga practice without giving any conscious consideration to the importance of the spiritual discipline of service to others. Contemplation on the Atman is important, says Swami Vivekananda, but working for the sake of others with non-attachment is as difficult as any tapasya, and produces identical results.
In introvert meditation, we discover that God is within us; in extrovert meditation, we move toward organic wholeness, an understanding that God exists all around us, and that we are a part of His wholeness.
The art of compassionate service then becomes a working meditation, a worship of God in all we do. He too used to spend time in worshipping and meditating in front of idols of Hindu gods and goddesses such as Shiva, Rama, Krishna.

That realization is to be attained by renunciation, by meditation—renunciation of all the senses, cutting the knots, the chains that bind us down to matter. Swami Vivekananda tells us that, in fact, service to the living God in man (and woman) is the goal of life. Extrovert meditations are required to move the richness of the solitude discovered in introvert meditation outward through work and action toward a celebration with life and a feeling of compassion for life, not an ascetic denial of life. And so, in 1893, during the World of Parliament of Religions forum at the Art Institute of Chicago, Swami Vivekananda talked about Hinduism, about Vedanta and Yoga.Yogananda's forerunner, Narendra and who only lived 39 years, listen to this, 39 years!
One through Raj-yoga (through control of mind) and other through understanding Vedanta - the non-duality (soul and brahma). This is more of philosophical book than a guide to those who are just beginners wanting to learn meditation. Compassion becomes meditation when we grow in the attitude that we are serving God in all beings.
Worship cannot be confined to our meditation hour, our week’s hour at church or temple, or our time of prayer. When, before meditating, you proceed to "purify the nerves", you must mentally strike hard on the Kundalini in the Muladhara (sacral plexus), and repeat, "Arise, Mother, arise!" One must practise these slowly.
If we can develop the attitude that all of our work is His work, then we must make greater effort to be skillful in that activity, as if it were a meditation.
In the long run this power of meditation separates ourselves from the body, and then the soul knows itself as it is — the unborn, the deathless, and birthless being. But this happens simply owing to a lack of steady practice in meditation and concentration.
