Where the Girls Are: The Facts About Gender Equity in Education presents a comprehensive look at the educational achievement of girls during the past 35 years, paying special attention to the relationship between girls’ and boys’ progress. Christianne Corbett is a senior researcher at AAUW, where she writes about gender equity in education and the workplace. The third map shows how nations score on the Gender Equity Index based on indicators of education, economic participation and empowerment.
While there are some differences among these maps the basic pattern is the same: Women face less barriers and more opportunity in more advanced countries.
This is in line with a good deal of research on the subject, which documents the connection between economic development, higher levels of education and more open-minded and tolerant values.
Societies that empower women tend to be open to other kinds of diversity as well, which enables them to more fully utilize the talent and human capital of their people - foreign born, religious and ethnic minorities, gays and women alike.

UO Special Collections and University Archives, in collaboration with Oregon Softball and the Women In Flight program, presents a three-part series this week detailing the early history of Oregon women’s softball in celebration of the last regular season games this weekend at Howe Field (1936-2015). During Becky Sisley’s early years at the University of Oregon, softball and other women’s competitive sports and other Women’s Recreation programs received only limited funding from the Incidental Fee Committee.
Still under the aegis of the Department of Physical Education rather than the Athletic Department, softball players and other female student-athletes were still fighting for acceptance and institutional support; women’s sports were still dependent on incidental fees allocated by the ASUO for their annual budgets, and athletic scholarships were unavailable to women. The 1975-1976 Title IX Task Force Report brought to light the gap in the institution’s support for women’s athletic programs and numerous gender equity concerns across the campus. By the mid-1970s softball practices began during winter term to get a head start to the spring competition. Though they failed to return to the 1977 AIAW national tournament, as Oregon State swept their best-of-three series to determine which of the two Civil War rivals would earn the trip to Omaha, the Ducks recovered from the disappointment to repeat their success in the NCWSA Invitational Tournament.
When she was growing up in Alabama, Martina Edwards' family saw Wall Street as more of an idea than a place. Then she linked up with Sponsors for Educational Opportunity (SEO), an organization that strives to increase diversity in investment banking and other parts of corporate America.



Analyses of results from national standardized tests, such as the National Assessment of Educational Progress and the SAT and ACT college entrance examinations, as well as other measures of educational achievement, provide an overall picture of trends in gender equity from elementary school to college and beyond. That spring, Women’s Intercollegiate Athletics was merged into the existing Athletic Department, creating a single structure to oversee all intercollegiate athletics at the University of Oregon.
The team suffered a setback in 1978 when they lost their first 10 contests on the way to a 4-13 finish.

After the Beavers knocked off Oregon 5-1 at Amazon Field in Eugene, the Ducks rebounded to win two straight in Corvallis for the Northwest’s berth in the national tournament.
The university began to identify ways that it could reduce and mitigate the facility inequities and lack of a women’s athletics support staff that had been identified during the Title IX compliance review.
In addition to having a GTF assistant coach for the team as early as 1975, softball would finally have hope of getting their own field on campus.

Corbett holds a master’s degree in cultural anthropology from the University of Colorado, Boulder, and bachelor’s degrees in aerospace engineering and government from the University of Notre Dame.
She has a bachelor’s degree in biology from Hamilton College, a master’s degree from Boston College, and earned her doctorate in education policy from George Washington University.
