The Scottish Centre for Regenerative Medicine is the first large-scale, purpose-built facility of its kind in the UK and was the first laboratory building in Scotland to receive a BREEAM Excellent rating. The internal configuration concentrates daylight and natural ventilation on the spaces that will benefit most. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all material is copyright © 2016 University of Edinburgh.
The Centre will develop new treatments for human diseases affecting the nervous system, liver and other organs. Write-up spaces and offices are located around the perimeter, surrounding concentric rings of primary and secondary laboratories and smaller specialised rooms towards the centre of the building.
The building’s cantilevered structure is clad in clear and opaque curtain walling maximising views of the surrounding landscape.

The plant has been located on a mezzanine level between the laboratory areas on the ground and first floors, to maximise efficiencies within these heavily serviced spaces. These include medals of medical interest, wartime memorabilia, books about the Polish School of Medicine (in English and Polish), photographs, paintings, sculptures and other artefacts, including the original crest of the Polish School of Medicine and a hand painted tea service. Vertical aluminium fins minimise solar gain and provide a striking feature to the elevations.
The building features a variety of sustainable design solutions, including ground source heat pumps, rainwater harvesting, photovoltaics and chilled beams, all contributing to its BREEAM Excellent rating. Most of the collection is housed at the Chancellors Building, the University of Edinburgh’s Medical School, with a small satellite exhibition at the Lister Postgraduate Institute. Many of the items in the Collection have been gifted to The University of Edinburgh, or directly to the Collection, by Polish Medical Academies, grateful former students, staff and graduates of the Polish School, and their families and friends.

The late Dr Wiktor Tomaszewski, a former member of staff at the Polish School and a long serving and revered Edinburgh doctor, was the main driving force behind the realisation of this collection and also added extensively to it. The establishment of the Polish School of Medicine in March 1941 was a unique wartime academic initiative. Although originally intended to meet the needs of students and doctors in the Polish armed forces, the School opened its doors to civilians from the outset. Students followed a Polish curriculum, were taught mainly in Polish, and were awarded a Polish degree.
