A hot weather tent should have good mosquito netting, ventilation and a design that allows easy air circulation. Patterson is a retired firefighter and EMT, and as part of his job, was outdoors year-round.
Be strong enough to stand up to wind and snow load – with a low profile, strong poles, snow shedding design, lots of tie downs.
Have good hardware – hooks, clips, and slide adjustments should be easily operated with gloves.  Don’t get anything that needs to be fastened with your bare fingers. For winter camping, moisture can be a life and death consideration, in certain circumstances. A tent has to have adequate ventilation to keep moisture condensation down, Patterson said, but the vents have to be appropriately sized.
The tent will need to be large enough for the occupants to keep their sleeping bags away from condensation on the walls, Patterson said, and the condensation is usually the worst where the waterproof floor wraps up to the walls. This is Bob’s Sierra Designs Four-Man Extreme shown in the Boundary Waters in February.
But regardless of where you are, before pitching any tent, the first step is to get out of the wind. That might mean digging down into a snow drift, or finding a thicket that will break the wind.
Leon Pantenburg is a wilderness enthusiast, and doesn't claim to be a survival expert or expertise as a survivalist. As a newspaperman and journalist for three decades, covering search and rescue, sheriff's departments, floods, forest fires and other natural disasters and outdoor emergencies, Leon learned many people died unnecessarily or escaped miraculously from outdoor emergency situations when simple, common sense might have changed the outcome.
Leon now teaches common sense techniques to the average person in order to avert potential disasters.
After graduating from Iowa State University, Leon completed a six-month, 2,552-mile solo Mississippi River canoe trip from the headwaters at Lake Itasca, Minn., to the Gulf of Mexico. His wilderness backpacking experience includes extended solos through Yellowstone’s backcountry; hiking the John Muir Trail in California, and numerous shorter trips along the Pacific Crest Trail. Some of Leon's canoe trips include sojourns through the Okefenokee Swamp and National Wildlife Refuge in Georgia, the Big Black River swamp in Mississippi and the Boundary Waters canoe area in northern Minnesota and numerous small river trips in the Midwest and Pacific Northwest.
Since 1991, Leon has been an assistant scoutmaster with Boy Scout Troop 18 in Bend, and is a scoutmaster wilderness skills trainer for the Boy Scouts’ Fremont District. Leon earned a second degree black belt in Taekwondo, and competed in his last tournament (sparring and form) at age 49. As development continues at a rapid pace for ARK: Survival Evolved to the best it can be, today we got a new huge update for it that adds two new regions, the beautiful Snow region and the Swamp region.
If you ever find yourself in the great outdoors without a tent or some form of shelter, you’ll need to make your own.
Once your walls and roof are completed, you’ll want to add some extra coverage to keep out the elements. This simple shelter can provide some great insulation and serve as a nice camping spot for one or more people, depending on how big you make it.

Since you can be exposed to lots of sun on the beach, this shelter is especially important to providing you with shade. In a desert, you will find your access to trees and foliage much more limited than on a beach. Deserts are known for their extreme temperature variations – blazing hot during the day and cold at night. Due to the extremely low temperatures and sometimes-fierce winds, survival in snowy conditions can be particularly tricky. Once the snow has sufficiently hardened (typically an hour or two), start digging out a cave from one of the sides and into the middle. Make sure you poke some ventilation holes throughout the shelter so that a sufficient amount of fresh air is getting in. A skilled outdoorsman, Patterson is a regular in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness every year, and is a former member of the National Ski Patrol.
He is an enthusiastic Bluegrass mandolin picker and fiddler and two-time finalist in the International Dutch Oven Society’s World Championships. For the whole night before a minor snowfall, the news will be filled with hacks eagerly reporting on grit stockpiles, weather forecasters bounce around like small children, and Ranulph Fiennes gets called in to lecture on frostbite.
In some situations, you may just be able to camp out on the ground or find some natural shelter. It will provide you decent coverage from the wind and rain, and give you an extra barrier of defense against wild animals. Depending on how long you plan on staying, you may want to dig the branches into the ground and push them up against the center branch for increased stability.
Look for smaller branches that still have some leaves on them, or any sort of brush you can find. Make sure the sand forming the walls is compacted enough that the beams can lay comfortably across the top. Staying out of the sun will keep you hydrated longer and conserve your energy, as well as protect you from a potentially bad sunburn and debilitating heat stroke. You’ll have to make due with what you have and pay special attention to your surroundings to find natural shelters to help you out.
If you don’t have a shovel, use whatever you can find to do the digging to avoid using your hands. Hollow it out until there is enough room for you to lay down with a little bit of extra space. Where Patterson camps, in northern Minnesota, it can get very cold, with temperatures routinely hitting  -20 degrees.
It was inexpensive, and has served me well over at least 80 nights of camping under all conditions. Every technique, piece of equipment or skill recommended on this website has been thoroughly tested and researched. En na een seizoen in de sneeuw komen ze ook zeker niet met een dikke nek en wat extra kilo’s thuis. However, nature can sometimes threaten your safety if you’re unable to find an adequate shelter.
Lean up as many branches as you need to in order to form the combined roof and walls of your lean-to shelter. Weave these pieces into the walls of your shelter until it looks like you have enough coverage.
It can also be a great project for you and your family or a team building exercise when trolling through the woods.

Look for rock outcroppings that form natural trenches so that you have a base to build from. Secure it with rocks or sand on the edges, making sure you leave enough room for you to easily get in and out of the shelter. If you leave your shelter and it continues to snow, you can easily lose it if it’s not clearly marked. Since I can  generally find a place to pitch my shelter out of the wind, the lack of a vestibule has not proven to be a problem. But don't worry, it's just a bit of precipitation: you're a 21st Century man or woman, and you can beat nature! En als ze wel iets zijn aangekomen, dan ligt dat aan de overontwikkelde beenspieren door het vele skien. Armed with the ability to build your own shelter in different environments, you’ll be much more equipped for survival. If you can’t find one, get the largest branch you can lift and brace it up against a standing tree at a 45 degree angle.
You can also use the foliage to make the ground inside the shelter a little softer for you to sleep in. In a couple of instances, I dug down into a drift and built a snow block wall to break the wind.
Make sure you mix the snow in the process – mixing snow from different layers helps to make it stronger because of the different temperatures. Keep a constant speed, choosing the most suitable gear well in advance to avoid having to change down on the hill. In slippery, snowy conditions it's best to select '2', which limits the gear changes and also makes you less reliant on the brakes. Some autos have a 'Winter' mode which locks out first gear to reduce the risk of wheel spin. If you do get properly bogged down in snow (unlikely in all but the most remote parts of Britain), here are a few tips to get you out: - Check your exhaust pipe before you start the car. If it's buried in snow, your engine will have decreased power and carbon monoxide might build up in the car and kill you.
This is very much a last resort, and especially dangerous if, like most of the population, you don't keep an air A compressor in your car. Yeah, cycling in the snow can be a little bit dodgy, but on all but the most snowed-in roads it's a pretty damn good option.
If you're going to try it, ideally use a mountain bike, or at least get some knobbly tyres for your ride. Also remember to wrap up warm, and plan a route in advance -- you might know your tube commuting route down to angle is best to enter the train carriage at, but you'll still have absolutely no fecking clue about the actual path to take on the roads. Rather than battle through the gummed-up road network or pathetic excuse for a railA infrastructure, call your boss with an apologetic "sorry, it's snowing and I can't make it in today", whack those PJs on and crank up the (insert feelgood music of choice here); it's 'work' at home day! I'm not going to say that working from home is a total skiving doss (otherwise my boss may never let me do it again), but it's pretty damn sweet.
The key is to log on nice and early, while still in bed and half-asleep, and make it seem like you're keen to do work.
You can then drag projects out withA infeasibleA delays and hang-ups; if your work isn't totally brain-intensive, you can probably multitask nicely between 'working' and watching old people flog crap on Antiques Roadshow. Unless you're totally dependent on the train network (and boy do we feel your pain), you can probably trek into work somehow. If you have the option though, working from home is easy and painless, and provides endless procrastination opportunities.
