South Africa did less well on the vote for favourite long-haul overseas country, especially with the 2010 World Cup coming up, and was not included in the top 5 list of New Zealand, Cambodia, Chile, Vietnam and Japan. Switzerland, Norway, Austria, Sweden and Italy were the top five European countries voted for by the British readers. Luxury traveller magazine, Conde Nast Traveler, has released the results of its annual readers’ choice awards – revealing Cape Town as the best city in Africa, and 4th in world. The annual list compiles information on the best cities, hotels and global destination based on its reader survey which drew response from 76,659 people in 2014.
According to the magazine, Florence, Italy, took the top spot as the best city in the world (from 2nd position last year), followed by Charleston in the USA, Budapest, and Cape Town – 7 spots higher from 11th position in 2013. Five of the top 25 cities are found within the USA, Conde Nast said, spread across the entire country – from Santa Fe (10th), to San Francisco (20th) on the West Coast, Chicago (23rd) and New Orleans (16th).
Three of the top 25 cities listed can be found in Italy – aside from Florence (1st), Rome (7th) and Siena (16th) also remain in the top cities.
Looking at Africa, Cape Town was the only African city to make it into the top 25 – making it the best city on the continent, according to Conde Nast.

In August, the magazine ranked Cape Town as the world’s 8th friendliest city, thanks to its nature, coastline, mountains and beaches, noting it was also quite safe for tourists. However, Johannesburg was ranked as the world’s unfriendliest city, due in large part to safety and security issues associated with it.
The Singita Sabi Sand also cracked the top 10 as the 4th best hotel in the world, with a score of 98.11. The town of Gibsons, population about 4,000, was named the best place in the world to live, among communities with fewer than 20,000 residents, by the International Awards for Liveable Communities. The town was first thrust into the spotlight on The Beachcombers, an internationally distributed CBC television comedy-drama series that first began filming there almost 40 years ago. Among the qualities recognized in Tuesday's award announcement was Gibsons' commitment to healthy living and environmental sustainability.
A geothermal plant is in the works, generating heat for hundreds of homes with a minimal carbon footprint.

When Craig Perry docked his boat in Gibsons, it was supposed to be a brief stopover on a sailing trip to Russia. The community does have its challenges, and closely fought local elections in 2008 reflected the split between those who want to encourage development and those who want to slow it down. Builders are fighting to turn the lush mountainside into luxury condos for retirees from Vancouver. Smith said he hopes the international recognition for Gibsons special ecosystems will serve as incentive for the town to continue going green. The harbour is also being re-developed and environmental activists worry that could spell the end to what make Gibsons so special.
