It was interesting in the book that when things were pretty bad, most were about to give up. Listen to this broadcast or download “Priorities -vs- comfort” in player below!
Preparedness lists are helpful in that you will often find a new idea within — something that you may not have thought of before.
Here is a list, in no particular order, of items possibly worth considering in your overall survival preparedness plans. This list of prep items is meant to give you ideas, and not meant to be an all-inclusive list for preparedness, because no list ever is. Important legal papers: copies of deeds, mortgages, insurance policies, wills, trusts, etc. I would only add one thing, a .22 caliber pellet rifle, otherwise I believe you covered almost all of the bases.
Best two dogs I ever had were a male and female Lab from the Humane Society shelter in Savannah, GA. I highly agree with a .22 caliber PELLET rifle (big enough to kill those garden pests, racoons, possum, squirrel, cats, dogs, birds, etc and NOT much noise. But the cheapest price SINE wave inverters (off grid) inverters,, are typically from China (sorry). I installed a little 5w panel on my riding mower (no controller here), and it keeps my riding mower battery GREAT. Heck, you can even nail some boards on the roof and do some container gardening on the roof. The above ground plant, is clearly a sunflower, but the blossoms are NO bigger than a yellow DAISY. Skyrocketing crime rates, disease, threats from abroad, economic collapse, natural disasters, and civil strife all make the likelihood of needing a safe shelter a very real scenario. When it comes down to it a€“ you want to make it out on top, and having the proper gear, protection, and refuge can help you achieve that. Created for use by the US Military, the Tennier Industries Bivy Sleeping Bag is your solution for lightweight, portable, and waterproof protection.
Building and designing your own personal survival kit can be a very rewarding project – especially if you ever actually have to use it.
I must say Creek, I was very impressed at how well planned and prepared this little tin is. Well, I happened to stumble upon these when I was purchasing 550 paracord for a homemade survival bracelet. Do you mind if I quote a few of your articles as long as I provide credit and sources back to your blog?
Being prepared for any emergency with the right EM Kit not only saves time but also your life and others!!! For Honey buy or if you already have honey then get straw cut size desired or as is melt one side of straw then pour up the honey melt the other side.
In a disaster situation where you actually WANT to be rescued, your signalling and communication skills need to be much higher up on your list of survival priorities. In fact these skills rank around number 4, even before food, as a means of being rescued needs to be set up very quickly. However, for preparing for actual survival of a doomsday scenario, they rank much lower down the list of basic survival skills that you need to learn. When the SHFT one of the main survival elements is to lay low and ride out the aftereffects un-noticed. Going unnoticed is one of the key prepping objectives in the early stages of a major disaster, especially if the situation has required you to effect a permanent bug out, away from the looting and unrest and potentially highly dangerous people who need food and water at all costs. For a prepper your signalling and communication skills will generally be restricted to your family and close prepper network friends.
Pre arranged signalling between family is needed to ensure your safety and communication between other preppers is a means of knowing the bigger picture and exchanging notes on the state of the disaster you are all in. As usual, these must be prepared way in advance – practiced and understood between all parties, and any equipment needed must be stored away in the bug out bags.
You can also break down signalling methods into manageable pieces, for example, Some signalling requires you physically do something, like make a hand gesture – this is generally known as ACTIVE SIGNALLING. While other methods like forming an SOS sign on a beach or with rocks is considered to be STATIC SIGNALLING. Hand signals are by far the most effective methods of signalling as they are noiseless and relatively simple.

You can also control the volume of a whistle quite easily with a little practice making this a good way of communicating. One of the good things about a whistle is they are cheap to buy – the one shown here is less than ?5 all in. They can be used to guide you back to camp – or for complete signalling theres always the internationally recognised signalling method of Semaphore. Mirror signalling is good for short and long distance communication and require relatively little sunlight to produce good results. At worse any old reflective surface will do (the end of a can, some broken glass) the inside of your Survival Tin is also a very good makeshift signalling mirror. You can also get highly polished reflective survival signalling mirrors that incorporate all the modern features you would ever need for this type of signalling. Specific signalling mirrors come with a targeting device in the center making them perfect for pinpoint signal accuracy.
For a good quality signalling mirror (like the one shown here on the left) you can expect to pay up to ?20 – but this is top of the range stuff. Fires and Flares and Glow Sticks are a lot less covert than the other methods mentioned here so far, but need to be included for pure positioning and location reasons. A fire can be a bad idea if you are trying to stay concealed and requires a lot of skill to hide the smoke it gives off. It is said that it will push temps down next week to January levels and bring strong winds as far inland as Minnesota!
As a communications technician I would also add that a shortwave receiver be capable of single side band (ssb) reception. Remember also tools, microscope, crank power cells, telescope, biometric data reader, maps, a good forge and metals, animals for food source along with good seed. Then every time you eat a tomato, watermelon, eggplant, squash, etc,, SAVE the seeds from it.
Too many women (and some men) have these flimsy belts that are little more than decorations and would never withstand repeated draws and reholstering.
For those unsure of their ability to build their own shelter, several companies are available to do the work for you. When disaster strikes, time is of the essence.
Since the beginning of time, man has been designing Survival Kits of all types, shapes and sizes. Building an expansive 72 Hour Bug Out Bag Survival Kit can take many hours and can be expensive. In this small kit I packed 2 waterproof matches (dipped in nail polish) and taped a match strike strip on the underside of the lid.
Pack a strong nylon thread – it can double as fishing line, snares or other cordage needs. But just the smell of the coffee can bring ones moral up real quick if feeling down and defeated…like you say Creek, staying alive is mostly mental. What a great time, the instruction was top notch, realistic, and easy to incorporate into everyday life. There downside is both parties have to be within eyesight of each other and know what each signal means. They can be the same as the textbooks or even make your own up – but get something done so you can communicate silently with your family if you are in danger. Smoke can be seen for miles and will lead anyone straight to your camp along with the use of glow sticks, these should be avoided if you want to stay unnoticed. Forget packing like you're going on vacation a€“ it's time to go!The Emergency Zone Reflective Emergency Shelter Tent is a great portable shelter that should be included in your basic emergency survival kit. This tent is made of reflective Mylar, an amazingly durable film crafted from polyethylene terephthalate.
This tent comfortably sleeps two and measures 44 x 51 x 92 inches (width x height x depth). A popular challenge within the survival community is to build a small and thorough Survival Kit using an ALTOIDS CANDY TIN. I’ve been preparing my vehicle with survival items such as rope, bottled water, gas cans, etc.
It was how Randy Bragg in the main character, took some time to put up a box of things, goodies, like coffee.
Even the smallest of skills must first be learned if you expected to survive after the SHTF.
This tent helps keep your body heat from escaping, ensuring you are warm and comfortable when out in the wilderness.

To ensure the greatest ease of storage and portability, the Texport Bivy weighs only  4 pounds. They are hard to find by themselves so typically you will have to buy something else and pry it off.
I’ve recently completed my get home bag with hope of working on a BOB in the near future.
Just tear it open and smell the wonderful aroma, then just fold over, stick a piece of duct tape on it and re-use later when needed. If you are having trouble accomplishing a certain skill the staff will make the time to make sure you are comfortable before completing the course.
In a situation where mobility is key, finding water from natural sources to supplement your ready supply is essential to keeping your pack weight low and to keeping you on the move. In my group our children have skill enough if they get separated from the group they can setup shelter and fire.
The Emergency Zone Reflective Emergency Shelter Tent is 8 feet long and wide enough to comfortably sleep two people.
In this article, I’m going to cover just a few of the easy ways to procure water in a survival situation. At only $10 per tent, having two or three of these is an economical solution to ensuring your whole family will be prepared. Second, it puts you in the survival mind-set and forces you to think creatively about how and what to pack in the kit. SIGMA 3 Survival School only hires the most elite operators and your instructors are the real world special forces operators that have decades of experience in these specialty skills sets.  If you are traveling or are worried about urban survival, then this is the best course in the country available to civilians to get you prepared.
Transpiration Bags One of the easiest and simplest ways to obtain water in the wild is by the use of a transpiration bag. While this method may not be one of the more mobile methods for obtaining water, it is reliable in any environment that contains living and green vegetation. This method does require you to carry large, clear polyethylene or similar bags in your kit. In a pinch, gallon-sized or larger Zip-Loc bags will work as well. The first step in gathering water from plant materials is to first ensure the plant you’re planning on using is not toxic.
Not a must have, but we promise you will appreciate it!Our Scout Survival Kit also contains lots of items that are useful for this course. There are plants that release toxic alkaloids as they transpire as well as plants that have a surface coating of irritating chemicals such as urushoil oil. Always determine beforehand whether or not the plant you’re going to use to obtain water is safe. The concept of the transpiration bag is simple. As plants undergo photosynthesis, pores on the leaves open to allow the passage of carbon dioxide and oxygen. During the period that these pores are open, oxygen exits and water vapor is also released.
Your goal in this process is to trap this transpiring water as it escapes. The first step in setting up your transpiration bag is to secure a fairly large leafy branch (preferably one that is under full sunlight) and place it gently into your transpiration bag. Try to ensure that one of the corners of the bag is on the bottom as this is where the water will collect.
Additionally, you can add a small clean stone to that corner of the bag to ensure that the water pools there. Secure the mouth of the bag as tightly as possible to prevent the transpired water from escaping the bag. With the bag secured, the only thing left to do is to wait and allow the water to collect during the heat of the day.Once the temperature begins to cool it should be time to gather the water. Keep the small pool of water in the bag low and gently shake the branch that the bag is on.
Collect the water in your hydration source and pick out any leaves or bugs that may have fallen in and consume within 24 hours. Though we are not all related by blood, the bond of 2nd ammendment supporters is just as strong.
