AnonymousJanuary 16, 2014 at 9:51 PMDo you have a link to the pouch you use or at least the model, brand and dimensions? Many survivalists know that cotton dryer lint that has been coated heavily with petroleum jelly can be used successfully as fire tinder.
Be sure to use lint from cotton dryer loads only – man-made fibers will not do the trick.
Once you start collecting dryer lint for tinder kits, you’ll never grumble about cleaning the lint trap on the dryer again. While I have a stock of disposable lighters that I plan on giving out or using for barter, I also keep a good, old-fashioned refillable lighter both in my home and my car.

In survival situations, the ability to build and light a fire can make the difference between life and death. Fire can cause problems, as well.  If you are hiding from someone, the enemy can detect the smoke and light it produces. Understanding the concept of the fire triangle is very important in correctly constructing and maintaining a fire.
If you are in a wooded or brush-covered area, clear the brush by scraping the surface soil from the spot you have selected. If you have a device that generates only sparks, charred cloth (called charcloth or char cloth) will be almost essential. Despite these warnings, I have known people to store their buckets of wheat and #10 cans of white flour in garages without air conditioning, in attics, in storage sheds, etc. I didn’t even remember the fire event until I got home with a batch of my free food and opened a mylar pouch of instant mashed potatoes. In the spirit of curiosity, I made it a mission to go through a selection of food items that had survived the fire in order to ascertain the extent of the damage. Freeze-Dried Strawberries: One can of these were fine, but a different can looked and smelled distinctly crispy. Instant Mashed Potatoes: I personally checked at least 15 pounds of these to see if there was at least one mylar pouch that was still good. Your survival knife will help you process fuel down to the appropriate sizes before getting your first flame started. Cartoons that show people rubbing two sticks or two rocks together don’t show how difficult this sort of friction fire starting can be.
No matter how skilled you yourself are, you’ll want something that’s easy to do because you want any member of your family to be able to start a fire and make that cup of soup.

We make fire starter kits by coating our dryer lint in petroleum jelly (we buy multi-packs from Amazon) and stuffing it into toilet-paper roll cores.
Keep these stored in a special container away from heat and when you need to start a fire, these twigs will catch very easily.
This one is excellent because it’s lightweight and easy to take along, and lasts for a very long time. You have several of these easy methods to start a fire already on hand when the big quake hit. Whether you’re sitting in front of your fire place at home or a fire pit outside, starting a fire can be tricky. One by one, either submerge the cotton balls into the jelly or work the jelly into the cotton balls with your fingers. If you take these pine cones and apply some melted wax, you have yourself a fine fire starter.
It is always a good idea to have a lighter but they can run out so having waterproof matches is a great alternative. Always remember to practice the utmost of safety around fire and in general, keep small children away from the flames as much as possible.
You can use fire to purify water, sterilize bandages, signal for rescue, drive animals from their homes, efficiently modify the landscape, smoke and preserve food, softening tar for adhesives, making charcoal for medicinal purposes, and provide protection from insects and animals. Charcloth holds a spark for long periods, allowing you to put tinder on the hot area to generate a small flame. It is bigger than tinder but smaller than fuel wood.  Again, this material should be absolutely dry to ensure rapid burning. Ash is a very good insulator, so embers left overnight will only lose a fraction of their heat. To properly cool a fire, water should be splashed on all the embers, including places that are not glowing red.
The sand will deprive the fire of oxygen quite well, but it is much less effective than water at absorbing heat.

A little over a year ago, an arsonist torched the storage facility where my parents kept most of their #10 cans. It hadn’t been in the fire with everything else, but it was still old-ish and had been sitting in a hot Houston garage for the better part of a decade. Even if an arsonist passes you by, inadequate temperature controls will work their inescapable black magic.

A good survival knife is a must for any situation but understand that its just as important (if not more important) than your fire making devices. The paracord lanyard is for securing the flint and steel to my belt loop so that I don't lose it.
One is a Piezo Electric and works even after being submerged in water (watch our video on this HERE). I also included some of the Coghlans version that are really saturated and have a little longer of a burn time. But now, you must stay out of your home as the aftershocks have made it unsafe to be indoors. When you’re trying to survive, you don’t have time for cartoon-inspired methods, no matter how cool they seem. And now, you gather around a toasty fire and have a warm cup of soup and a reviving cup of coffee. The trick is to start off with something that burns for a long time then gradually add larger and larger pieces of wood until you reach your desired size of fire. Take that dryer lint and carefully place it into the individual holes in a cardboard egg carton.

Dip your matches into the wax to cover the match head and part of the stick, or you can dip the whole match in the wax, it is your preference.
Fire not only cooks and preserves food, it also provides warmth in the form of heated food that saves calories our body normally uses to produce body heat. Fire can also cause burns and carbon monoxide poisoning when used in shelters.  Weigh your need for fire against these concerns. It will also reduce flying sparks and cut down on the amount of wind blowing into the fire.
You are looking for a thin material with a large surface area.  The best wood from trees are the dead branches that have not fallen off yet.
You can make charred cloth by heating cotton cloth until it turns black, but does not burn.
It is even possible to restart the new day’s fire by using the embers as an igniting device.
Once the fire has been covered thoroughly with sand, all water that can be spared should be poured on it, and the sand stirred into the ash.
A The food never did actually burn, but the fire was close enough to cause heat-related damage.
What had once been under beds and stashed in their garage is now in their new basement, lining the shelves in rows upon rows of #10 cans, buckets, and Rubbermaid bins. My parents’ specific unit and its contents survived the fire, but not everything escaped wholly unscathed. It might be interesting to run some kind of chemical analysis to see if they still have any actual nutrition in them, but we were unable to tell based on taste alone.
The magnesium helps start even wet tinder and the striker is so that I don't have to use my knife. Make sure you put them in something like a bag in hot climates, so they don't mess up your entire kit. Tinder Quik tabs are small cotton tabs that have been impregnated with something to make them waterproof and long burning.
You’ve been busy setting up camp in your backyard and helping your next-door neighbor craft a tent out of survival blankets.
There’s even a cotton ball and room for a spare in the bottom of this storm-proof match kit.
Another possibly troublesome time transformed into what will someday be a happy memory of gathering with your family in front of the fire. Fire starters make this process easier by burning a long time and lighting easy and they are a great addition to anyone’s survival gear. For best results waterproof your matches as soon as you open a box so the matches do not pick up any moisture.
The correct ratio of these components is very important for a fire to burn at its greatest capability. It can also be created by placing cotton cloth in a tin and and setting the tin into a campfire.  Once it is black, you must keep it in an airtight container to keep it dry. Then the ashes should be stirred with a stick to make sure that the water has penetrated all the layers; if the hissing continues, more water should be added. The insurance company declared the food a loss, but figured my parents were capable of tossing it themselves, as they saw fit. It takes some practice, but since it requires no fuel it’s great to have on hand in case of an extended emergency.
Not wanting that indecent amount of granola, freeze dried fruit, and instant mashed potatoes to go to waste, my parents kept it. It would probably still be okay for making play-dough, but I don’t know anyone who needsA that much play-dough. You can also use it to make a bird nest to be used with primitive techniques like the bow drill method (watch video HERE).
Charred materials are also not affected by wind but actually benefited by a hotter burning effect.
