As well as making sure you have the best training to get your new career in the subsea industry off to a flying start, what additional certificates and medicals will you need to be able to work offshore? The Offshore Survival Course for UK waters is officially known as Basic Offshore Safety Induction and Emergency Training, or BOSIET.  It includes a range of skills which may be required when working offshore including safety, first aid and hypothermia, fire prevention and fire fighting, helicopter safety and escape and survival at sea. Everyone that works offshore is also required to complete a medical.  If you are a commercial diver, your Diving Medical (renewed annually) will cover this as it is much more extensive than the standard offshore medical.

Biodiversivistby Russ FinleyLatest: Did Climate Change Drive the Bramble Cay Melomys to Extinction? Throughout the course I kept wondering about the likelihood of actually surviving a helicopter crash.
SIX offshore workers were killed and another missing feared dead last night after a helicopter belonging to an Aberdeen-based firm ditched into the Irish Sea. The aircraft, carrying five Centrica employees and two crew, ditched into freezing water 25 miles off the coast between the Isle of Man and Morecambe Bay on the Lancashire coast. SINCE 1969 there have been more than 30 fatal incidents involving oil rig support helicopters, with more than 110 workers and air crew killed. Britain’s worst helicopter disaster happened in November 1986, when 45 people died after a Chinook crashed while ferrying oil workers to and from oil platforms in the North Sea. The twin-rotor aircraft, whose three crewmen were ferrying 44 workers from Shell platforms in the Brent fields, plummeted into the North Sea only two miles and one minute’s flying time from Sumburgh airport, south Shetland. However, my office is next to the airport in Aberdeen, and these helicopters are taking off every 5 or 10 minutes. There was no way I was going to give up, but I agree, I could think of more enjoyable activities in which to partake!
The mission of R-Squared is to foster civil, objective discussions on energy and environmental issues. The oil and gas industry’s training standards body has set new and higher standards for Tropical Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (THUET). The training has increased from four hours to a one-day course which must be repeated every four years.
Albert Skiba, OPITO Vice President Gulf of Mexico, explained: “To date survival training in the Gulf of Mexico has been sporadic with no common standard and no common quality control. OPITO has developed this common training standard in partnership with industry and training centres in the region are currently seeking accreditation to run these courses.
Funded by industry for industry, OPITO is the recognised, global authority on safety training in the oil and gas sector.
OPITO works with governments, regulators and industry all over the world to deliver improved safety training standards and workforce development frameworks. OPITO’s Tropical Basic Offshore Safety Induction Emergency Training standard (TBOSIET), of which THUET is one element, is not mandatory in the Gulf of Mexico but the organisation is hopeful that it will eventually become a statutory requirement in this region as operators accept the value of this three day course over what is currently being delivered.
Group chief executive of OPITO International, David Doig, concluded: “One of the most pioneering and hi-tech industries in the world, oil and gas operates in hostile environments and hazardous conditions. Ideally you should have a technical or electronics background to get into this section of the industry.

Have been working in foreign going bulk carriers for six years, As third engineer for last two years.
You have a great background and you would be an ideal candidate to think about doing the HSE Diver training and then look for work inshore and offshore in this industry. There are some agencies out there but a majority of our students will contact the companies themselves.
I know there are Site Manager roles but I know that this would involve experience on a rig in the first place. With your background in construction you have a strong skill set to bring to commercial diving, so it might be something worth considering.
IF you are already working as a ROV Pilot and have logged 500 flying hours already then you can look for offshore work if you have not already worked in this sector of the industry. We offer commercial diving courses starting from a 9 week standard package through to a 13 week Premium Package or you can go down the ROV route.
The purpose of the training is to prepare people to survive offshore in the North Sea, and is required before you are able to go offshore in the U.K. I had a lot of people who told me they never counted to seven, they just pushed out the window, unsnapped their seat buckle, and exited the window. It was important to keep your hands on the window, because when you flipped, you tended to float away from the window. I did a bit of investigating, and odds are you are never going to have to use your training in the event of a crash. It took me four tries to obey the cardinal principle that THOU MUST NOT MOVE YOUR HAND OFF THE WINDOW. One guy showed up drunk when we were going to have to go into the water, and he was dismissed. It covers how to get out of a helicopter in the event of a ditching or controlled landing on the sea as well as rig abandonment and sea survival.
The new THUET standard goes well beyond what is outlined by the BSEE Bureau of Safety Environment and Enforcement by the US government and is designed to give offshore workers the knowledge, competence and confidence they need to remain safe and in the event of an incident while travelling to work.
The organisation’s vision is to have common safety training standards accepted and adopted by the industry to significantly improve the safety of the global oil and gas workforce.
All our courses take in the whole of St Austell Bay making your days with us informative and fun. I have previously undertaken course work in electronics, hydraulics and physics while serving in the army. If you have a CV you can email through we can then advise if it’s the 7 week ROV Premium course you need to do or the 3 week Rov Pilot Technician course.
Of the seven, three would involve capsizing where we would have to escape from the simulator upside down. You are already wearing a survival suit, which is tight around the neck (but mine leaked like a sieve). In fact, there were people in my class who came out as soon as the simulator went under water. After my training, I feel better-prepared to survive a ditching, but it is certainly never something I wish to test my skills against.
I can still recall the week-long toothache I got after one of those times of being plunged to the bottom of the pool. The training takes an individual through many scenarios to get them comfortable with a safe evacuation of the helicopter whether it is upright or submerged and upside down. Every worker, on every helicopter trip has the fundamental right to know that the people around him, or her, are trained to the highest standards. Half of the time I was mainly working on deck, but last 4 months I was almost all the time with 3rd officer. A big portion of the course involved learning how to evacuate a helicopter that ditches in the North Sea.
But I found that once I had gotten past the gag reflex, it was no problem to stay under water and breathe with the rebreather. And the only EBS device OPITO approves can be used only by white caucasian men, or to be more polite, persons with big narrow nose. What this entailed was being strapped into a helicopter simulator, being plunged under water, and then getting out and to the surface. Afterward, I developed a tremendous headache and tooth ache (still haven’t quite gotten rid of the tooth ache) as the pressure on my sinuses must have aggravated a nerve. But after I was finally able to breathe with the rebreather, the helicopter simulation was really a piece of cake.
