Quality Education, a life-skills approach and Education for Sustainable Development are inextricably linked. This publication demonstrates how the United Nations Decade of Education for Sustainable Development provides an opportunity to progress towards implementing universal quality education that fosters the knowledge, skills, perspectives and values that lead to a more sustainable future. Workforce development is emerging as a new framework for orienting vocational education and training (VET). In 2007 Judy facilitated a Reframing the Future project which aimed to assist TAFE SA to provide consistent, responsive and quality RPL services. Vocational Education and Training (VET) by its very nature has always had strong connections with industry. This Concept Map, created with IHMC CmapTools, has information related to: Education for sustainable development. SERES, a movement started seven years ago in Guatemala and El Salvador by Australian engineer and passionate change maker, Corrina Grace, has been awarded the UNESCO-Japan Prize on Education for Sustainable Development. Corrina and SERES leadership facilitator, Abigail Quic, were invited to Paris to receive the prize on behalf of over 2,000 youth and young adults between 15 and 25.
The methodology plants the seeds for life-long learning and provides the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors to help participants become more informed, engaged and empathetic members of society. SERES programs include youth congresses, Congresos de Juventud Liderando por la Pachamama, with 30 potential youth leaders in local communities throughout Guatemala and El Salvador coming together for a three-day congress, facilitated by their peers who have become certified SERES trainers.
By the end of the congress, priorities have been chosen and action plans written that are shared in a public forum where not only the message of the plight we are facing, but of the understanding that we can lead through it to building more sustainable and peaceful communities is declared. SERES is currently working in a partnership with the sustainable department of the University of California, Irvine to offer a similar Education for Sustainable Development program for its students. SERES is now developing a center in Guatemala that will serve as a training ground, a living lab, intellectual hub and meeting place for cross-cultural, multi-disciplinary collaboration among local leadership, civil society, development practitioners, researchers, international institutions, students and the philanthropic community.

Sustainable communities are places where people want to live and work, now and in the future. The text of this page, more details and a full reference can be found in the Word document 'What is a Sustainable Community?'. These characteristics of sustainable communities are also presented in the 'Egan wheel' named after Sir John Egan who chaired the review into skills for sustainable communities.
Imagine you can move the spokes of the wheel to demonstrate in a pie-chart the notional importance given to each component in the conventional teaching of the geography of settlement. This project was run in partnership with the Academy for Sustainable Communities which has since become the Skills and Knowledge team at the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

Education encompasses teaching and learning specific skills, imparting of knowledge, positive judgment and well developed wisdom. Education in its contemporary development should be aimed at the future, should “foresee” and form in a certain way and satisfy needs of future generations of people. Sustainable Development is a complex concept with its origin in the natural and social Sciences that has been developed through international dialogue in response to the challenges facing the world today.
A core principle behind sustainable development is the idea that economic, social and environmental conditions play a major role.
The Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD, 2000), proposed the Decade of Education for sustainable Development (DESD). In India, since the mid 1980s efforts have been on to bring Environmental education (EE) in formal education at all levels. If government officials or school district administrators are unaware of the linkage between Education and Sustainable development, re-orienting education to attain sustainable development will not occur. Pacific Education for sustainable development framework (2006) have identified a priority area in formal education and training which focused on structured learning initiatives for improved knowledge and understanding to support implementation of sustainable practices where the objectives of promoting quality education in all member countries was given focus. Since ESD involves a comprehensive approach to educational reform, it should extend beyond the boundaries of individual school subjects and requires the attention of teachers, educational administrators, planners and curriculum agencies. Inclusion of materials and experiences to develop a conceptual understanding of the phenomenon of change and the problems related to Sustainable development and to develop minds that cope with change and reasonable techniques for doing so is required. 3.Have you ever taken up any initiative as mentioned above that may lead to a sustainable society? 4.List a few activities for developing proper habit of disposal of Degradable and Non- Biodegradable wastes among school students? Content is available under the Creative Commons Attribution Share Alike License unless otherwise noted. It is increasingly used by practitioners, policy makers and commentators involved in skills development both in Australia and overseas. Full time VET teachers of industry disciplines come into the vocational education sector after working and building their skills, experience and industry contacts and networks. On the one hand, Neil is Head Teacher (Manufacturing) at Orange Campus (TAFE NSW Western Institute), while on the other hand he is the Training Manager for Manildra Flour Mills  (MFM), one of the biggest flour mills in the world. These youth have been involved in SERES’ new approach to education and leadership, an approach that acknowledges our increasingly interconnected and interdependent world. They explore what it means to be a leader, what good leaders do and how they might become one in their communities.
In a recent survey, 100 percent of the participants identified the program as being “essential to their educational experience at UC Irvine,” highlighting the importance of this shift in education. Promoting the "Best of Guatemala" through articles on Travel, Food, Culture, People, Business, Health, and Community Service. They meet the diverse needs of existing and future residents, are sensitive to their environment, and contribute to a high quality of life. The eight components have a high level of language sophistication in both of the forms in which they are given. It is probably best thought of as a framework for looking at communities which can to be explored and tested by geographical thinking. The GA promotes and supports geography teaching by producing high quality resources for teachers, running CPD events and influencing policy makers.

That means that education should be anticipatory to social, economic and cultural life, it should form desirable sustainable future. According to Brundtland Commission (1987), Sustainable Development is “development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”.
ESD has five components; knowledge, skills, perspectives, values and teaching issues which are to be addressed in a formal curriculum for sustainable development. It considers the year 2005-2014 as the United Nations Decade for Education for Sustainable Development (UNDESD). In 2003, the Honorable Supreme court of India directed that EE should be a compulsory subject at all levels of education. When people realize that education can improve the likelihood of implementing national policies, regional land and resource management programs, then education is in a position to be reoriented to help achieve sustainability. Integrating the objectives, concepts and learning experiences of education for a sustainable future into syllabuses and teaching programmes is an important part of such reform, indeed: “A basic premise of education for sustainability is that just as there is a wholeness and interdependence to life in all its forms, so must there be a unity and wholeness to efforts to understand it and ensure its continuation.
Content and outcomes needs to be in tune with the social and cultural realities of the times.
They are safe and inclusive, well planned, built and run, and offer equality of opportunity and good services for all. This is an eight-minute video explaining sustainable communities with professional viewpoints and glimpses of Basingstoke, Greenwich Millennium Village and Newark. It is an application of pedagogy, a body of theoretical and applied research related to teaching and learning. The basic vision of the DESD is a world where everyone has the opportunity to benefit from education and learn the values, behavior and life styles required for a sustainable future and for positive societal transformation. Orientation to cultural and social realities also involves value bearing concepts and experiences which encourage examination of value and value conflicts. Can you identify specific terms or vocabulary to introduce or reinforce for subsequent geographical learning?
Or does it really come down to people wanting 'good design and facilities on their doorstep'? The basic aim of the education system for sustainable development is ‘education of a new man', ‘a man of a sustainable type of thinking’ a man of Cosmo-planetary consciousness with a holistic world outlook, who has a culture of sustainability, high socio-cultural needs and deep moral ethical values, who is capable to solve global tasks facing by the mankind and to promote the forming of sustainable society. We need new organizational forms and educational institutions mobile, synergetic, creative, future-oriented- which could provide the implementation of new objectives and new historical functions of education. Thus the importance of ESD must reach beyond the delegations and permeate the educational community and general public.
Hence ESD should be incorporated in the entire curriculum starting from pre-schooling to higher education which should be transacted in a meaningful manner. For that it is necessary that all spheres of life of society be incorporated whenever possible upon the principles of sustainable development.
The decade provides an opportunity for countries to define for themselves the kind of path they wish to follow. While there will be overall agreement on the concept, there will be nuance differences according to local contexts, priorities and approaches.
