Under this goal one of the targets focused on teachers: all governments should ensure by 2030 that all learners are taught by qualified, professionally-trained, motivated and well-supported teachers. Micro-innovations refer to cost-effective, replicable and scalable classroom or school management interventions that can be implemented by teachers and schools across different Indian states. In India, about 60 million more children are going to school than before which is an amazing figure. Many other countries have also had an equal level of improvement, but what is also important to note is that the quality of education is not always high enough, especially for the disadvantaged children.
So, at STIR, we think about solutions for that, in terms of what the teachers are already doing in the classrooms, in the way the schools are being managed, in the way parents are being engaged. Our scale-up partners include respected NGOs such as the Azim Premji Foundation, Bharti Foundation, Teach for India and Pratham; the Delhi and national governments.


The selection process is three-staged and intensive - including a visit by the STIR team to the school, a face to face interview, and a final assessment centre where teachers will be asked to present their ideas to their peers and to a distinguished national and international panel. It also aims to leverage funding from official aid donors, philanthropic funders and governments to scale the most successful micro-innovations up. There are lots of good policies now in place, but the difficulties often come with implementation. We are looking, and have found, promising micro-innovations in each of these areas - because we know these will lead to improved educational attainment for poor children.
