One of the fantastic benefits of homeschooling high school is being able to invite great teachers into your home. This year my high school junior and senior tackled one of the more challenging courses, Old Western Culture. Old Western Culture is a study of the great books that shaped western culture and the world.
The Romans is a full year of instruction which includes four units: The Aeneid, The Historians, Early Christianity, and Nicene Christianity. For our family, we have found it is such a huge blessing to invite master teachers into our own home! Plus, if you think about it, the one time purchase (or streaming option) can be used for all of our children. Over at Out of Print, you can play The Great Gatsby video game and donate books at the same time. Back in 2011, Charlie Hoey and Peter Malamud Smith created the video game, turning the famous novel into a Nintendo-era video game.
Every time her students get ready to talk about a piece of reading, Amber Damm, a seventh- and eighth-grade teacher at Clara Barton Open School of South Minneapolis, MN, arranges her classroom desks in a circle and assigns seats. For the last five years, Damm’s students have used the Shared Inquiry method of learning, developed by the Great Books Foundation. As an added bonus, the Shared Inquiry method is also preparing Damm’s students to meet the benchmarks under the Common Core State Standards. It can be scary to hand control over to students, but the rewards are worth it, says Sarah Benefiel, a sixth-grade English teacher at Carlos Fuentes UNO Charter School in Chicago, IL.
For Benefiel, student-led Socratic seminars were a way to challenge students to go beyond an initial reading of the text.
If you are new to student-centered discussions, how do you go from being the one who asks all the questions to the relatively silent facilitator? In the Shared Inquiry method of discussion, the text provides the foundation for student understanding, multiple meanings, and debate. Take Away: Even if you think a text is above your students’ reading level, bring it in and plan opportunities for students to engage and grapple with it. Before any discussion, Damm’s students spend five to ten minutes writing their response to the? first question. Students at Sarah Smith Elementary School in Atlanta, GA, start learning Shared Inquiry discussion practices in kindergarten. When teachers seize on student questions and use them to drive discussion, it empowers students, agrees Denise Ahlquist, professional learning consultant at the Great Books Foundation.
Take Away: Set the expectation that questions are valuable and take time to answer every question that you can during discussion. Damm and Benefiel sit outside of the discussion circle and interject only to facilitate or to invite students to participate. Take Away: During discussion, give students simple directions to encourage them to interact with one another.
At Sarah Smith Elementary, a week before student discussions teachers have their own Shared Inquiry discussions about the stories they are reading in class. Take Away: You will find more success with student centered discussions if you are able to prepare for them in collaboration with other teachers.

How quickly or how effectively you will transition to student-centered discussions depends on your own experience as a learner and teacher, so be patient and plan to spend a few weeks teaching students how they work.
Here are four more things to keep in mind when getting started with student-led discussion. During Shared Inquiry, the role of the teacher is to be a model learner for students and to show what it means to go from not understanding to creating meaning. As you ask your students to take risks, be willing to be pushed out of your comfort zone as well. I attended a shared inquiry workshop in Staten Island, New York and have tried it with my group of second grade students. It was amazing to see how the group openly discussed, learned from others opinions and built on other students’ ideas through the use of shared inquiry. Deborah, Thanks so much for taking the time to share your positive experience using Shared Inquiry!

Which means we will be doing history through the summer (just like last year!) because we won’t be able to wait. She is author of You ARE an artist art curriculum for all ages, a cookbook series and helpful homeschool habits at Hodgepodge.
For every player that reaches a score of 25,000 on the game, Out of Print will donate one book. So far, 280 books have already been donated. This method prompts students to uncover their own ?meaning from challenging texts through deep discussion and questioning. The new standards very much emphasize the student-centered discussions that take place in Damm’s classroom on a daily basis. When Benefiel started hosting student-led Socratic seminars in her classroom, she chose two poems, “I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings” by Maya Angelou and “Sympathy” by Paul Laurence Dunbar. Both Damm and Benefiel found that when preparing for discussion, students were able to grapple with a text much more difficult than that they may have read on their own. This allows less outgoing students to share their carefully considered answers, and ensures that everyone has an opportunity to participate. Underscoring the value of questions also helps open the floor to students who may struggle with reading in general.
During discussion, asking students “why?” and “what do you think?” is enough to encourage students to deepen their understanding of the text without losing student ownership. If one student disagrees with another, for example, prompt her to turn to the other student and try to convince him of her point of view. This helps teachers go through the process and become deeply familiar with the texts before they facilitate student discussions. Set up pair-shares, informal discussions, and other opportunities for talk as students work with a text.

But resist that urge and trust the process of discussion to get kids to form their own understandings and build off of each other’s ideas. Taylor excels as Velvet Brown, a 1920s working-class girl whose dreams of owning her own horse become a reality when she wins Pie, a wild and unruly horse, in a raffle.

The double-credit assumes that the student will watch all the videos, read the required reading, answer the daily worksheets, and take 4 exams (one for each unit). Plus, Dave Raymond’s American History (40% off) you know how much we’ve enjoyed that course! In the course of her experiences using Shared Inquiry, Damm has come to value the way that this method encourages her students to grapple with ideas. Indeed, as more schools adopt the CCSS, teachers will need to follow Damm’s lead in letting students take the floor.
Throughout the week, students read and re-read the poems, wrote and revised discussion questions, and planned their discussion contributions.
On the other hand, students were more engaged because they knew this was a rigorous discussion.
After the discussion, students reconsider their answers based on what they’ve heard from other students, and are given a chance to change their initial responses. Damm and Benefiel both recommend keeping a record of who has contributed to the conversation so you can ensure 100% participation. With the help of Mi Taylor (Mickey Rooney), a skittish, gun-shy ex-jockey, Velvet trains Pie to be a race champion despite the wishes of her loving but cautious parents (Donald Crisp and Ann Revere). This has made for an incredibly rich year and the equivalent of two full high school credits for each of my students. It was the education of the Church Fathers, of the Medieval Church, of the Reformers, and of all the Founding Fathers of the Unites States. During their final 25-minute discussion, the conversation about symbolism and author’s perspective was so productive that Benefiel was hesitant to end the conversation, even when class was over. Damm reads the final responses to assess how students changed their minds during the discussion, and why. Velvet's determination pays off, and the Brown family (including Angela Lansbury as Edwina, Velvet's sophisticated older sister) pools its money and enters the family pride and joy in the prestigious Grand National race, only to have its hopes dashed when the rider renegs--leading Velvet to do something extraordinary. This uplifting adaptation of Enid Bagnold's novel features stunning photography of coastal England and acclaimed crosscut editing that heightens the tension in the famous race scene.
