Given the popularity of SUVs, it's surprising that Ford has until now only offered the Kuga in the UK. Ford has worked to shift its image over the past few years, aiming for a more upmarket and premium image. Ford has revealed that prices for the Edge SUV will start at ?29,995 for the entry-level 177bhp 2.0-litre TDCi Zetec model. The 177bhp engine is also available in the Titanium and Sport spec levels, priced at ?32,245 and ?34,495 respectively.
Intelligent all-wheel drive, pedestrian detection, Active Noise Control, a DAB radio with Ford's SYNC 2 connectivity system, 19in alloy wheels and privacy glass come as standard across the Edge range.
The new Ford Edge SUV is set to arrive in the UK in early 2016 and will take on the BMW X3 and Audi Q5. Company sources confirmed they are hoping to launch the medium-sized Edge in spring 2016, but it will not spell the end for the MPV segment.
Previewed in concept form at the LA motor show in November 2013, the prototype shown at the Paris motor show in 2014 indicates that Ford is planning to stick closely to the design of the concept.
That large grille is believed to include new active shutters, which automatically open and close to help control temperatures inside the engine bay. The Edge will slot in as the third SUV in Ford’s showroom line-up above the Kuga and the recently launched EcoSport.
Ford says the Edge has been designed “from the ground up to be visually athletic and to meet high expectations for quality in Europe”.
Ford’s European marketing chief, Roelant de Waard, said the Edge offers more passenger space than similar-sized SUVs that cost considerably more. The new technologies offered on the Edge include Adaptive Steering, Active Noise Cancellation and Front Split View Camera.
The Active Noise Cancellation system features three cabin-mounted microphones which it uses to help generate opposing sound waves via the audio system’s speakers.
The Front Split View camera system helps the driver at difficult junctions and when manoeuvring out of parking spaces.

It's several thousand short of a base X3 (?33,945) and that's before adding any equipment to bring the specs near even. This is not strictly true, I work in the middle east & the Edge is quiet a common site. The previous Edge is sold in the Middle East and it is a really good looking vehicle and is quiet popular here. This looks more like a Hyundai, especially with that front grille, or a Kia, while in profile the proportions seem odd, almost as if the rear end looks to big and heavy for the size of the car.
After looking at how the X series does on the Jdpowers reviews perhaps Ford should be aiming a bit higher! Well Ford has made some significant changes to the Edge, giving it a diesel engine for starters as well as tweaking the steering and suspension. The Ford Edge is the quietest large SUV around and feels like a luxury saloon on the motorway with near silence at a 70mph cruise.
But Ford offers good PCP deals, helped by much improved residuals, and the Edge comes very well equipped. A Hyundai Santa Fe starts at almost £32,000, although admittedly it does come with seven seats - something which the Edge doesn't. It may not look it in the pictures, but the Edge is a big SUV - it's longer than a Volkswagen Touareg in fact.
Ford says the utility segment of the European new car market grew from 10% in 2008 to 21% in 2013, with sales of the Kuga said to be up 38 per cent year on year for the first five months of 2014.
Ford says its Adaptive Steering system continually changes the steering ratio with the vehicle speed, which it claims optimises the steering response anywhere between parking speeds and motorway cruising speeds.
These sound waves act as cancellation against unwanted engine and road noise in the Edge’s cabin.
One version, which produces 177bhp and 295lb ft, drives a six-speed manual gearbox, while the other makes 207bhp and 332lb ft, and drives a six-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. This new version doesn't stand out from the crowd like the previous version, the front grill and lights look too much like the Hyundai Sante Fe and Kia Sportage.

IMO the original Edge looked great and was better looking than this new model, as is the new Lincoln MKX. Because 2016 sees the launch of the Edge - a car that has already been on sale in the US for some time. Plus there are other changes like acoustic glass, which massively cuts noise levels inside.
The interior may lack the design flair of something like an Audi, but the quality is impeccable plus it feels well finished and solidly built.
That may put some buyers off, but the Edge is still family friendly with a huge boot, fold flat seats and lots of rear space. The Mustang may get all the attention but the Edge is a car that will no doubt do more to change the perception of Ford. The first generation of the Edge was a US-market-only car but was a significant success for the brand.
Additionally, along with familiar technology such as automatic city braking and blind spot warning, one of the more unusual options are inflatable rear seatbelts, which have an airbag inside the webbing strap that runs across the passenger’s chest. The Ford needs be more in line with the Korean pricing for it to be competitive, never mind a bargain. Ford have developed the new shape obviously for the European market, but I agree with Shrub starting at 30k seems rather optimistic.
The interior looks okay, but again nothing makes it any different to the looks of other cars competing on the same level (again the other 2 vehicles I have mentioned above). The interior is not good enough to compete against the X3 and Q5, there build and material quality and look of interior components is in another league to the Edge.
