Ford just announced that the four-cylinder-EcoBoost-powered 2012 Explorer achieves 28 mpg on the highway, and it’s now released fuel-economy figures for its 2012 Edge crossover with the same engine. The optional turbocharged four-cylinder produces 240 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque here, which is 45 hp fewer—but 17 lb-ft more—than made by the Edge’s standard 3.5-liter V-6. Sporting an edgier exterior, refined interior, greater power and a host of performance and technological upgrades, the 2011 Ford Edge crossover is as sharp-looking as they come.
The five-seat midsize crossover is larger than compact SUVs like the Escape, but is smaller than three-row SUVs like the Explorer. This mid-size crossover competes with other crossover SUVs such as the Dodge Journey, Nissan Murano, and Toyota Highlander. The five-passenger crossover nets 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway with the turbo four and front-wheel drive. The EcoBoost Edge’s efficiency is aided by a unique six-speed automatic transmission, low-friction motor oil—remember to ask for it at your local lube shop, kids!—and active grille shutters that close at higher speeds to improve aerodynamics. A newly available four-cylinder engine with EcoBoost™ has caused the most buzz amongst consumers and critics alike. For comparison, front-drive Edges equipped with the standard 3.5-liter V-6 swill gas at a rate of 19 mpg city and 27 highway. Ford has not announced pricing yet, but the EcoBoost costs $995 on all Explorer trims, and we’d expect that to hold true here.

Compared with other crossover SUVs in the segment, the Edge is less rounded off than the Nissan Murano, but not as boxy as the Toyota Highlander. A high beltline gives the four-door, five-passenger vehicle a sleeker look than the Subaru Forester. Standard wheels are 17-inch alloy, while 18-, 20- and 22-inch wheels are offered depending on trim and option package. In a first for Ford, the base engine will come from their EcoBoost family of turbocharged engines. Also available for added fuel efficiency is a 240-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that makes 270 pounds-feet of torque.
The top-of-the-range Sport model features a 305-horsepower, 3.7-liter V-6 with 280 pounds-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive are standard, with all-wheel drive available. Ford is also debuting new adaptive steering technology on the Edge; it is available on Sport and Titanium models, and can change the amount of steering effort required to turn the car on the fly.

So if you’re in a parking lot at low speeds, it adds more steering to make the Edge easier to turn, but on the highway it smooths out inputs. Other optional features include a rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, and leather seats. Ford’s SYNC voice-activated controls and MyFord Touch infotainment system are optional, as is a premium Sony audio system. Back for 2012 after its introduction last year is MyFord Touch, which combines with Ford’s SYNC system (both are options) to give you total control over you Edge using voice commands, a touch screen in the dash, or controls on the steering wheel.
SYNC and MyFord Touch add Wi-Fi capability, text-to-voice capability, HD Radio with iTunes Tagging and voice-activated navigation system.
There is now an enhanced parking assist system that works for parallel parking and backing into perpendicular spaces as well; the Edge handles the steering, you just work the pedals and shifter.
There is also a 180-degree front-mounted camera that helps you see around corners, a hands-free power tailgate, lane keep assist, and side parking sensors all optional as well. Ambient lighting, power rear lift gate, high-intensity discharge headlamps and panoramic sunroof are among the notable available features. Adaptive cruise control with collision warning system, BLIS (Blind Spot Information System) with cross-traffic alert are available, as are rear parking sensors and a rearview camera system. And with the new twin-turbo four-cylinder it gets an added dose of efficiency that might make you think twice before you chose any other SUV.
