Some folks might disagree with me and put warmth ahead of shelter in terms of importance, but I believe shelter is extremely important. When I talk about shelter I’m talking about some sort of structure that will shield you from rain, moisture and heat robbing wind. Luckily building a decent shelter isn’t that difficult, especially if you have a few key items in your kit. You want to be sure that the lean to has enough slope to shed water, but you also want it to be fairly close to the ground. Under the lean to you’ll want to create a thick bed of leaves, pine boughs or whatever else you can find that will provide cushioning and insulation from the ground.
When you’re ready to turn in, wrap yourself in the second space blanket and pull as much debris as possible over yourself to act as insulation.
For this reason clothing constructed of a synthetic wicking fabric or better yet wool or Moreno wool is the way to go. With a rudimentary shelter and the proper clothing you’ll be able to survive a rainy wet night or two in the woods.
The first and simplest way to make a fire is via a waterproof match locker filled with waterproof windproof matches. To make a fire you’ll have to find more dry tinder in the field to combine with your lint. Hope for the best, but plan for the worst…That’s the mindset that will preserve your life if you get lost or stranded in the field! Stranded woodsmen have been known to survive for 30 days or more with almost zero food as long as they had access to water. Depending on the season and location, water can also be very difficult to find in the field. In the areas I frequent there are typically both seasonal and year around streams flowing, in addition to ground water in the form of puddles and small ponds.
Remember to note the direction of the wind and build your shelter such that the opening faces away from the breeze. The space blanket will reflect heat back toward your body and the more insulation you create the more heat you’ll be able to retain. Once they get wet they take forever to dry out and when wet they offer almost zero insulation. Wool is a great insulator and it maintains it’s insulating properties even when damp or wet.
If the conditions are really wet making a fire might be a stretch especially if you don’t have a lot of time to invest. In addition to these I carry a magnesium fire starter as well as a standard butane lighter. And remember before you strike the first match you’ll need to gather enough wood to last through the night.
