It was a case of two legs good, two wheels even better at Burghley Horse Trials in Lincolnshire over the weekend.
Following the Burghley event, a fleet of 26 cycle response units (as they are called) will be rolled out across the UK this month. On their first assignment, the bicycles almost immediately proved useful when a call came through to say a man had suddenly collapsed. Fellow volunteer Adam Young added: "The cycles really came into their own when trying to get through the busy crowds at Burghley. She crashed in the last lap of the race, falling over her handlebars after another rider lost control in front of her. Nearly 100 Red Cross volunteers and staff provided first aid for people at the event, including other riders with injuries caused by crashes – some of whom were sent to hospital for further treatment.

We provide Scotland with the highest standards in First Aid skills, services, and volunteering opportunities. Volunteers, supporters or staff - we need a wide range of people who can commit to our work so that together we can save lives in Scotland. More than 200 Red Cross volunteers were on hand to provide first aid cover along the challenging 32-jump course – but two volunteers were also equipped with new custom-built bicycles to ensure speedy access to any casualties.
Each of the bicycles, which were donated by Land Rover, comes fitted with a defibrillator, advanced first aid kit and resuscitation equipment. The cycling volunteers were there in minutes and treated the casualty – ensuring he was comfortable and ruling out anything serious – before the ambulance got there.
Is making a mistake in public – and having it replayed on Youtube – worse than making a mistake in private? Might the anxiety of helping in public, and not wanting to get it wrong, have actually contributed to the errors? In reality if someone is bleeding heavily or is unconscious and not breathing they need help fast – whatever the risks. Do you think this fear of humiliation prevents some members of the public from stepping forward to give first aid?
