Environmental, economic and social indicators tell us that our current model of progress is unsustainable. The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD) seeks to mobilize the educational resources of the world to help create a more sustainable future. The vision of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) is a world where everyone has the opportunity to benefit from quality education and learn the values, behaviour and lifestyles required for a sustainable future and for positive societal transformation. Throughout the Decade, education for sustainable development will contribute to enabling citizens to face the challenges of the present and future and leaders to make relevant decisions for a viable world. Reorienting educational programmes: Rethinking and revising education from nursery school through university to include a clear focus on the development of knowledge, skills, perspectives and values related to sustainability is important to current and future societies. Building public understanding and awareness: Achieving the goals of sustainable development requires widespread community education and a responsible media committed to encouraging an informed and active citizenry.
Providing practical training: All sectors of the workforce can contribute to local, regional and national sustainability.
Going beyond environmental education to reach education for sustainable development: the concept of sustainable development being closely related throughout its evolution to the question of the protection of the planet, environmental education today is widely known and practiced.
Drawing up an inventory of what exists for the Decade: many countries have carried out education for sustainable development programmes or activities. Mobilizing the media: the media represents a powerful means of awareness-raising and dissemination about the principles and values of sustainable development, as well as about promising experiences.

Establishing partnerships and creating synergies among the initiatives and programmes: no institution, even at global scale, can manage to achieve the goals of sustainable development on its own.
For the duration of this project Nektarina Non Profit serves as an umbrella organization, coordinating activities and resources.
The Conference will showcase initiatives, actors, networks and ideas that were inspired by the DESD and review their impact on the basis of data provided by stakeholders and collected by UNESCO. ESD implies integrating content related to sustainable development into education and using teaching and learning methods that help learners acquire skills such as critical thinking and motivating themselves to act for a better future. Achieving sustainable development requires a fundamental change of mindsets that results in changes of action. With the target date of the Millennium Development Goals and the Education for All objectives approaching in 2015, and two years after the Rio+20 conference, the World Conference will also highlight the crucial role ESD plays for the next set of global education and development goals. ESD employs a partnership approach that engages multiple sectors and stakeholders – including media agencies and the private sector – and utilizes all forms and methods of public awareness raising, education and training to promote a broad understanding of sustainable development.
By embracing these elements in a holistic and integrated manner, ESD enables all individuals to fully develop the knowledge, perspectives, values and skills necessary to take part in decisions to improve the quality of life both locally and globally on terms which are most relevant to their daily lives.
Business and industry are, thus, key sites for on-going vocational and professional training, so that all sectors of the workforce can have the knowledge and skills necessary to make decisions and perform their work in a sustainable manner. Identifying these, evaluating the results, and disseminating information about them will allow us to accelerate the integration of this new vision of education into national plans. Making the media an ally for transmitting quality information to citizens is a pledge of success for the Decade. Only united together, from North to South, East to West, can we be sure to build a viable world for us and for generations to come.

Sustainable development offers the best chance to adjust our course (UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon).
With a view to post-Decade activities, the conference will celebrate the successes of the DESD but also analyze obstacles encountered and lessons learned. ESD, which addresses the interdependence of environment, economy and society, can help bring this change about.
It will make concrete contributions to the post-2014 education and sustainable development agendas. Examples of good practice from all over the world will provide insight into viable approaches to ESD and help to identify key areas for future action.
Building on the Bonn Declaration from 2009, which states that “ESD is setting a new direction for education and learning for all”, the World Conference will address the importance of ESD as an integral component of quality education in the twenty-first century.
The World Conference will highlight the role of ESD for the transition to green economies and societies and as a catalyst for cross-sector planning and implementation of programmes in areas such as climate change, biodiversity and disaster risk reduction. The World Conference will also address how ESD can help move sustainable development policy and action forward to meet different global, regional, national, and local needs. Education alone cannot achieve a more sustainable future; however, without education and learning for sustainable development, we will not be able to reach that goal.
