With festival lineups starting to fill in all around the world, fans were starting to get antsy about who would play at this year's EDC NY.
EDC New York has announced the 2016 dates for fifth annual edition of Insomniac's Big Apple festival. Insomniac Events' flagship event, Electric Daisy Carnival, has announced it will be headed to Japan in 2016. Day two has come to a close and that means Electric Daisy Carnival New York 2015 has ended. The stage drew a strong, loyal audience that stayed from opening to closing and had quality from top to bottom. With a dearth of festivals on the market, promoters have to create new and innovative ways to market their events. There is a phrase -- PLUR (Peace Love Unity Respect) -- which is used by some to describe the ethos of the dance music culture, notably, the rave culture. After launching in Southern California 15 years ago and expanding ever since, the Electric Daisy Carnival held its inaugural New York-area event last week. Overall, EDC NY blew everyone away with unparalleled production for an electronic music festival — the lights, the rides, the performers were all top notch. Thomas Gold: Thomas is not only a great guy and talented musician (see our interview here) but he is also an awesome DJ, who puts on a varied yet always-entertaining set.
The Stadium Day 3: This is where the bassheads hung out all day until Bassnectar took the stage of course. We see your preferred language is English (United States), would you like to stay on English (United States) or switch to English (United States)? Sadly, there were few other art installations in attendance; most of them expectantly daisy themed. One “stage” that was unique to EDC New York was an Art Car decorated to look like an 80s boombox with “Made by Insomniac” printed on the back.
In 2014, EDC New York included a stage inside the stadium which, according to people who attended that event, “was the best stage. The only alternative terrains were elevated platforms, including two VIP ideas and the 7UP “Live It Up” deck, which invites people to climb a sketchy, 3 story scaffolding similar to the ones used during the construction of buildings.
An anonymous stage manager working for Insomniac later told me, “[Metlife Stadium] ended up being too costly for Insomniac.
Given the exclusion of Metlife Stadium from this year’s festival, and Insomniac’s previous experience with hosting festivals within stadiums (such as the LA Coliseum Catastrophe of 2010), there is a good chance that EDC New York will no long be held within Metlife Stadium. As far as Memorial Day Weekend events goes, EDC was still the go-to party on the east coast, boasting the best line-up of electronic danced music artists around.
The best performances at the 2015 Electric Daisy Carnival in New York, which included many surprises and debut tracks, were by (in no particular order) DJ Snake, Flux Pavilion, Laidback Luke, Kaskade, Afrojack, Armin van Burren, Bassnectar, Flosstradamus, and Yellowclaw. KCON Expands to New York for 2015, Following Successful Tokyo Launch; What's The Lineup? The KCON festival has expanded to the East Coast as Korean music and culture continue to find new footholds in the United States. The official dates of KCON 2015 in Los Angeles hasn't been announced yet but fans can be assured that it will once again be taking place at the Staples Center. New York is actually the second wave of expansion for KCON during 2015: The event went international earlier this month, when Tokyo hosted its first rendition. Although we on the Eastern half of the United States are stoked to check out who will appear next to the Atlantic, all eyes are on the Los Angeles event to see who they can secure for entertainment this year. K-Pop act NU'EST has announced its first American solo show and fans of the quintet will need to head to Texas to check the band out. Another K-pop will be making its solo touring debut in the United States and fans will have to react quickly to get tickets: B1A4 will be playing a series of four dates across the United States during early October. First making its debut in June 2014 to nearly 450,000 headliners during Electric Daisy Carnival Las Vegas at the Motor Speedway, the kineticCATHEDRAL finally lands in the city that never sleeps. Headliners at EDC NY can prepare to be blown away by the mesmerizing light displays, pyrotechnics, and intricacy of the stage. Additionally, Insomniac Events has curated a playlist for fans to enjoy prior to the annual event at MetLife Stadium. Two long days have come to a close with a lot of naked ravers going home tonight wondering why they didn't check the weather report this morning. Throttle - The young Australian may have had a 2:15 slot, but he was able to keep the crowds from moving past him and showed that the massive stage behind him did not overmatch his own abilities.
Don Diablo - Someone who has rebranded himself completely over the past two years into festival-friendly house music, Don Diablo brings out a large crowd for an early time slot. Hannah Wants - In an arena where very few women are booked on lineups, especially at the highest level, it is great to see Hannah Wants getting a solid spot at 4:15.
Ephwurd - The dubhouse duo of Datsik and Baishaus weren't like many duos first starting out in that they didn't have to start from scratch. Jauz - The second to last man on the Cosmic Meadow stage, Jauz had a good time and so did the crowd.
Kaskade - Attendees had to make the choice between Dillon Francis and Kaskade on the two main stages. Candy-Induced Smiles - The media work room was packed with snacks and with only a few hours to go a few of us decided to share the wealth with the world outside who had in effect paid for these snacks. Still taking place over two days, EDC New York 2016 will have two big changes from last year.
Details are scarce at the moment, but the event will take place in Tokyo in July next year.

There were good times to be had with outstanding production, quality music across four stages and good people.
Dance Circles: People go to electronic music events to listen to music, have fun and dance. The Magician: One of the classiest DJs in the business, The Magician took over the stage as the middle man in a succession of three DJs on the CircuitGrounds stage.
Eric Prydz: Eric Prydz had the unfortunate task of being paired with Kaskade, who was performing to the largest crowd of the festival thus far on the CircuitGrounds stage.
Costumes: Electronic music events always have an interesting array of different attire sported by attendees. Nobody wants to drive and if they are far away, the time spent in traffic can be almost as long as the music itself.
The electronic music festival brought 45,000 to the MetLife Arena in Northern New Jersey, offering 5 stages with 85 DJ acts across a three-day weekend (Friday May 18 – Sunday May 20). I was bummed that I missed out on some of the fun, but glad I rallied and was able to experience two full days of electronic music bliss. He turns 50 at the end of July and has been making tunes and making people dance for almost 30 years! He does play some of the popular tunes but always does live edits or mashups to keep it fresh, and his set at EDC was no different in that regard. From the pyrotechnic-laced opening to the crowd singing along to his “Pennywise Tribute” at the very end, every moment was incredible. That is why we are all headed for Metlife Stadium in New Jersey, home to the New York Giants and, during May 22 and 23, over 100,000 ravers from all over the East Coast.
Upon entry, attendees are greeted by a ten foot tall golden Buddha, replete with its own security detail. Although the Art Car did not budge an inch during the two day event, festival goers spent a few moments dancing in front of the “boombox” before moving on to the real stages.
Walking from one spot to another was lonely and tiring; no Mohawk performers to greet you, no interactive art installations to distract you, no other groups of people to high five along the way (attendance was low compared to past events). They were also giving out soda, sunglasses, and bracelets with blinking green lights on them.
Not just to clean up all of the vomit and piss, which gets into places you wouldn’t believe, but there is always some punk kid who wants to totally wreck some shit. The event, which has been held in Los Angeles for four years now, will make its debut in the New York City area during 2015. Residents of the Big Apple will have to travel an hour or so south to Newark, NJ, where KCON will take place at the Prudential Center on August 8.
The 2014 event was as big as ever, featuring showings by G-Dragon and Girls Generation. The group will play at Gilley's in Dallas, and so far no other American tour dates have been announced. On Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24, Insomniac Events will bring their breathtaking and colossal kineticCATHEDRAL Stage to the NY edition of EDC. The revamped version of the mammoth stage will stand 90-feet tall and 240-feet wide accompanied by 45-foot twin owls, which possess illuminated LED eyes. Attention to detail is a top priority with twenty multi-colored lasers and numerous LED screens, the illusionary stained glass effect at the kineticCATHEDRAL will enrapture festivalgoers with its elaborate elements. Day 2 had arguably a stronger lineup with names like Eric Prydz, Alison Wonderland, Jauz, Don Diablo, Kaskade, Hannah Wants and Throttle all going. The temperatures were already chilly, but the warmest they were going to be all day and Throttle had some summer house music ready for the crowd including some of his own cuts like his remix of Earth Wind & Fire "September," "Waiting" and "Moneymaker" that was played several times over the weekend.
He played plenty of his own music, but showed some dexterity to adapt to the situation dropping "Singing In The Rain" just as some moisture started to fall. Someone who is known for her talents as a DJ first, she knows how to spin a set together with the right track at the right time with some super clean mixes. Fans could have stayed from Hannah Wants to Alison Wonderland and heard some very different sounding music, but all worth the while. Mixing in the selections he has done with the likes of Netsky, Skrillex and Ephwurd, the set moved at a breakneck pace including dubstep, house, rap and more. He spends a lot of time cultivating his funny guy image and it has worked with his legion of fans that buy in and deliver some funny signage of their own at shows.
Seeing people's faces light up when you offer them the smallest thing like a bite size Milky Way or a tiny bag of fruit snacks was almost as good as being at the festival. We recapped for you yesterday the 10 best things from day 1, so here are the 10 best things that went down during day 2 (and some the whole festival) at EDC New York.
That dancing can be done quietly with small body movements or in more coordinated and taxing gyrations.
Sporting his signature priest outfit, Tchami kicked off with his religiously-themed "After Life" before launching into a myriad of his own remixes and originals, with a smattering of hip-hop tracks in there.
This left the crowd at the primary main stage with more space and for Prydz to get right to work. Insomniac transported the stage that was originally built for EDC Las Vegas last year to Metlife Stadium for this event so the cathedral could be used one more time. Whether you have someone in furry boots and tutus or a plastic horse head, there will always be someone looking to make a splash with their outfit. Similar to the DJ Mag top 100 poll, he has been voted number one in the Resident Advisor top 100 poll the past two years and continues to show why. The stage was the smallest inside of a tent, but it was by no means a barren place without any production value.

Almost too short to see over the decks, she keeps bopping the whole time and kept the crowd going for a solid set. He looked so bored his whole set that no matter how big the banger he dropped, I found it hard to get into. For anyone roaming the black tar plains it was hard not to notice to stifling presence of Metlife Stadium looming over everyone, like a creepy neighbor watching you dance from across the street.
It had better acoustics and was a nice break from [dancing on] asphalt.” This year, two tall fences encircle the stadium while a gold cart with flashing lights circles the stadium endlessly. For the moment, the new rendition of the festival will only be one day but if history is any indication, it could see expansion soon.
With five different stages there were plenty of great moments or acts, but we managed to pick 10 of them at EDC NY.
He also mixed in some drum n bass and heavier electro sounds to keep listeners on their toes.
Unlike many producers who become DJs to play out their music, Wants is a DJ and you couldn see it in the first 10 minutes. Alison Wonderland brought her technical prowess and eclectic selection to the boards for one of the more entertaining sets of the weekend.
He brings a sound that is melodic, uptempo and works in a main stage setting, but isn't the derivative one expects from that arena. As one of the final guys playing on a frigid night, Jauz had to keep the crowd from going home and he was able to keep the crowd swelling up to Dillon Francis.
As is the case in some other genres, those who are skilled at dancing, or just let it all loose on the dance floor, are able to draw a crowd and get others involved. There was a short hiccup technically at the start, but he got things going, premiering a brand new song at the festival, while only including one previously released track in its original form. It was a welcome relief from the massive walls of LED panels found on other stages and best incorporates all the elements of lighting, pyrotechnics, water fountains and lasers throughout the show. Looking across festival lineups and you will be hard pressed to see many ladies on the bill. Insomniac equipped the tent with eight overhead light rigs, a front display with puzzle pieces LED panels, more lights and plenty of lasers.
Event producers Insomniac and their collaborators for this venture, Pacha NYC, deserve credit for such an epic event. His signature “oh yes, oh yes” lets you know he still loves what he does and the crowd really appreciates it.
It is hard to define the German-born, Detroit-raised producer’s style, but whether you want to call it house, tech-house, progressive, or anything else, the fact remains that she makes some killer tunes. Goldie, who is also getting up there in age but can still put on a massive set, was great to see.
I wish he wouldn’t move around as much as it makes taking pictures impossible and maybe cut that hair so we can see that face … just kidding, he can do whatever the heck he wants as long as he plays sets like that.
Their arms are cased in colorful plastic beads and the guys wear neon sunglasses inside the terminal while the girls seem at ease in their underwear and tutus.
The Los Angeles version, the original KCON, was founded during 2012 and was just a single-day event.
They played plenty of the dubhouse that was quite popular on the main stages on the first day and has populated sets all across the dance music spectrum. This was shockingly the first time we heard "Panda" dropped, but no doubt it was played elsewhere. He started his set with some Cirez D techno, but then about 25 minutes in the gusting winds curiously shut down the stage for 20 minutes, despite all of the other stages staying open. There were the standard pics of Dillon's head on a taco and on a dolphin in a kiddie pool, but also more updates ones teaming Francis and his alter ego DJ Hanzel as the men to make America deep again.
In a moment of brief hubris, your author launched himself into one of these circles, probably to the detriment of those who though they might pick up a thing or two, but he is no worse for the experience and may try it again sometime in the future. He was in rare festival form, switching back and forth between monikers and putting together a asset with IDs spanning multiple years. They were far and far between at EDC New York, but luckily Gina Turner was on hand to deliver an hour and a half set that appealed to everyone regardless of genre.
I hope Carl keeps it up for another 30 years because he is truly one of the best, and EDM would not be as big if it weren’t for him.
Dieselboy, another legend, put on a high paced DnB laced set that helped me meet my cardio quota for the day and the MC with him was quite impressive.
He came back to close out with another 30 minutes of music, but didn't have the full momentum all the way to the "Opus" finale. There was also another with DJ Dillon Francis in his red button down as seen in the "Need U' music video.
The one previously released track was his new single "Generate" and people went mad for that. Her mix of tribal beats and house was a great way to get the day started and on the CircuitGrounds stage, the second main stage, nonetheless. Danny Tenaglia gave a nice and heartfelt thank you and big hug to Carl Cox before his set and said Carl is the reason Danny does what he does. Downlink was also pretty dope but I didn’t care as much for his live MC, minus the fact he was wearing a Misfits shirt which will always gain you points with me.
