Ed Sheeran has regained the number one position in the official singles chart with his song Thinking Out Loud. The track first topped the charts five weeks ago but since then had dropped down to number four. Nearly 29 per cent of Thinking Out Loud’s combined chart sales figure comes from audio streams.
In the Official Albums Chart, Take That’s III has become their sixth number one studio album.
With sales of nearly 145,000 in the last seven days, III finishes the week over 38,000 copies ahead of the number two album, Ed’s X. Take That have topped the album chart in the past with Everything Changes (1993), Nobody Else (1995), Greatest Hits (1996), Beautiful World (2006), The Circus (2008) and Progress (2010). Singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran visits the radio Q102 Performance Theater on Friday, July 4, 2014, in Philadelphia. There really is no stopping Ed Sheeran right now as his second album X spends a fifth week at Number One and with it, he can now say he has something in common with Adele and James Blunt.

According to the Official Charts Company, to-date, 23-year-old Sheeran’s sophomore album has sold over 400,000 copies in the UK alone. This week also sees X earn the title of longest consecutively running Number 1 album since Adele’s 21 topped the chart back in January 2011. 21 spent a staggering eleven consecutive weeks at Number One and returned to the top spot on several occasions earning a total of 23 weeks at Number One. It’s also the longest consecutive chart-topping run for a British male solo act since James Blunt’s Back To Bedlam topped the chart for eight consecutive weeks in summer 2005.
Both Back To Bedlam and Adele’s 21 have since gone on to become two of the best selling albums of all time in the UK.
Making up the rest of this week’s Top Five are Dolly Parton, who is up one place to Number 2 with Blue Smoke, giving the country music icon her highest album chart position ever in the UK. Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour is this week’s Number Three, while George Ezra’s Wanted On Voyage is Number Four.

Huge congrats to Ed Sheeran, his new track Sing has gone straight to the top of the charts. Seriously, despite writing One Direction’s chart-topper Little Things and having twelve Top 40 hits in his own right, Sing is the 23-year-old Suffolk born singer-songwriter’s first ever number one as a lead artist.
It is the second single to be released from Ed’s hotly anticipated new album, X (out June 23). When it first reached the top position it claimed the record for the longest ascent to number one of any single in the Official Chart’s history. With over 1,672,000 streams in seven days the single has beaten its own record for most-streamed song in a single week.
