Last Sunday (June 29th, 2014), Ed Sheeran captivated thousands of onlookers as he commanded the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury.
Judging by the album, the last 3 years can’t have been overly great for Sheeran, as the record predominantly focuses on romance and heartbreaks, and how the West Yorkshire-born singer-songwriter put his career first and made mistakes along the way.
If you wanted to know what Ed Sheeran sounded like before his 6x platinum record + or his sold out tour with Taylor Swift, now is your chance. Sheeran proves with his latest release his talent for writing beautiful and clever lyrics and strong melodies is nothing new. The collection takes you through the joys and pains of falling in love, breaking up and walking in the streets of London. He tackles the internal debate anyone who has ever been in love understands all too well, “Do I love you?
While his lyrics and melodies have grown in complexity and layers in his last two studio albums, 5 shows a beautiful simplicity and vulnerability.

Opening with Beatle–like screams, the demographic for tonight’s gig was generally towards the younger age, which is no surprise as Ed Sheeran himself is 20 years old himself, and for that age his musicality is very impressive. Ed Sheeran’s blend of acoustic melody, hip hop beat boxing and rapping has led him to gain a large following throughout the UK and tonight’s gig was unsurprisingly sold out to committed fans, avid chart listeners and those who appreciate true musical technicality and talent. I fall into the latter demographic and went to Rock City simply to be impressed by Ed Sheeran, which I definitely was.
It is hard not to side with Ed Sheeran, his confidence for such a young age shone through his set and his likeability extends when you think about the current state of popular music today dominated by the X Factor view that to be a successful musician it’s more important to look good, than sound good. The highlight of the set was Ed Sheerans cover of the old spiritual blues song ‘Wayfaring Stranger’ that featured apache-like crooning and impressive use of his loop pedal. Ed Sheerans performance tended to peak at times only to slow down and by the end of the gig it was clear that a large majority of the crowd where ready to leave, however in no way do I doubt that the members of the public who witnessed Ed Sheerans performance tonight left with a lasting impression and further appreciation of his music.

Ed Sheeran asked the audience to let him sing alone only once Sunday night, and it turned into the most poignant moment of the show. Words simply couldn’t describe the bubbling anticipation as I and many other Ed Sheeran fans stood patiently waiting outside the Cambridge Leisure Centre. Finally the doors opened and after a short period of waiting we were graced with a fantastic performance from the great Killamonjambo to warm us all up. He also had everyone enthralled with his magical performance of Drunk, as well as the heart pounding UNI which showed just how diverse this multi-talented musician can be. Each song he played was filled with passion as he encouraged us to sing-a-long in enjoyment. The highlight of the night was of course a superb performance of ‘A Team’, but that was to be expected since it’s such a universal song that everyone can enjoy! Overall it has to have been one of the best live performances I’ve ever had the pleasure of going to and I’m sure much more can be expected from Mr. No hidden media agendas and no long complicated self-indulgent articles, our reviewers just write passionately and from the heart.
The album sold more than 182,000 copies in the space of 7 days, making it the fastest selling album of 2014 so far. Heavily influenced by the pop and r&b styling of Justin Timberlake, the track was produced by and features the vocals of Pharrell Williams (who seems to be doing no wrong at the moment), so it’s no surprise that this is one of the strongest songs on the album. However, he makes them applicable to his young fan base by populating his tracks with references to his favourite pastimes, such as playing with LEGO. Sheeran previously released all five EPs himself before he was a household name under Atlantic Records. The variety in his music adds to the story of the lovable, smart redheaded Brit we all want to be serenaded by. Sheeran’s words and melodies transports the listener into his world and lets them see the sights, feel the emotions and understand the passion behind his songs. Most of her time is spent pretending to be best friends with celebrities, eating cereal and professing her love for one of the Franco Brothers. His set of 2 hours included Ed Sheeran manipulating his loop pedal to the absolute maximum.

His single ‘The A-Team’ featured a guest appearance by rapper Mikill Pane that went down like a storm with the crowd and his encore performance of single ‘You need me, I don’t need you’ gave the perfect end to a long yet impressive set.
It had been six weeks since I received my beloved Ed Sheeran tickets and I’ll tell you right now that it was the slowest six weeks of my life!
The atmosphere in the air was buzzing and it only got better after the angelic voice of Lucy Rose completed the warm up. It was time for the ginger superstar to take to the stage and dazzle us with his talent – and boy did he dazzle us alright! Of course I’m sure most of us who have been in long distance relationships can relate to such a track and since the majority of the crowd was made up of students, the song was definitely well received.
It goes without saying that Ed is a crowd pleasing man with a stage presence to be reckoned with. The follow-up to his debut album ‘+’ shows a darker side to Ed Sheeran, who told Buzzfeed that he wrote about “s**t that happens” and that it “sums up the last 3 years of [his] life pretty accurately”. It’s a clever technique that makes Ed Sheeran stand out from the other singer-songwriters that are currently dominating the charts.
Specific details and simple rhymes are refreshingly honest and tell an elaborate story of Sheeran’s past. At times you could close your eyes and imagine there was a full band playing up there, but as soon as you looked back onto the stage it suddenly felt intimate again, regardless of the teenage screams.
He gave an absolutely staggering performance of his latest hit Grade 8 which truly gave an example of just how talented this 20 year old man really is! At certain points in the night it even seemed like Ed wanted to have just as much fun as we were having. Sheeran is sharing a special gift with his fans by granting them insight on his journey to become the artist they know and love today.
