If you are purchasing worms for an indoor bin, ideally you want worms at all stages of the lifecycle: adults, juveniles as well as worm castings which contain the eggs. The worm supplier you buy from should offer a worm starter kit that includes bedding and castings. Indoor vermicomposting bins will turn out great fertilizer for house plants or limited outdoor areas that need a boost.
For most urban dwellers, the vermicomposting bin is the only compost method they have the materials for. Backyard Ecosystem began as an expression of my determination to make a difference in our own backyard. Permaculture is an approach to designing your home and agricultural systems that are modeled on the relationships found in natural ecologies. While originating as an agro-ecological design theory, permaculture has developed a large international following. As we all know that many people are adopting organic gardening rather going for the traditional forms of gardening.
Compost contains sufficient amount of minerals and nutrients which can be readily absorbed by the plants. You can create your own organic gardening compost by using the left over food or you can purchase ready made compost from any local gardening store.
One major advantage of preparing your own compost pile is that the high temperatures that will occur will help in elimination of the harmful diseases which are brought by pests or spores. For making the decomposition process of your compost pile more efficient you can add more scraps from your home. With the help of the above mentioned tips you can create your own organic gardening compost pile in no time.
The reason vermicomposting is becoming popular is because worms are very efficient eating machines. If you look online you will notice a bunch of different companies selling their own version of a worm bin, however If you look around your house you may be able to make one yourself for next to nothing. 6.)Place bedding at bottom of container with holes( I used a cocoa mix, cardboard clipping work fine as well. If you get this far, keep adding your worm food daily and wait at least three months for your worms to their thing. An application of compost tea will add life to your soil with beneficial micro organisms that will fight disease and pests, as well as, boost your plants growth. Many assume that worm tea is simply made by collecting the liquid that drains out the bottom of a worm bin (if it has drainage, that is), but this isn’t really the case.In actuality that liquid is referred to as leachate, and definitely isn’t nearly as good as real worm compost tea. Figuring out what type of fish you want to raise and the types of vegetables you want to grow is only a minute part of putting together a good system. Here is example of a home scale gravity feed constant flow aquaponic unit that I set up in a front yard in Ocean Beach, California. The water is pumped up into a set of 8ft x 4inch PVC tubes with 3inch wholes cut every 10 inches for the vegetables to grow out of. The bottom tube drains into grow bed made out of a food grade cement mixer container filled with river pebble.
Vermiculture composting (Vermicomposting) is the act of creating rich, organic humus for your garden or lawn by allowing red worms to help in the decomposition process. Make sure these are all chopped or shredded really well as some of them take longer to decompose than leaf litter.
Use a thermometer to monitor temperature in the bins until you get a feel for what external temperature is ideal for your particular set up.A  For our set up, the room temperature is kept at about 65aµ’ in the winter and 72aµ’ in the summer. Mary Appelhof (deceased) writes in her book Worms Eat My Garbage about burying small amounts of leftover meat on the bone with no ill effects.
If those don’t work, mince or puree citrus fruit and add about a tablespoon per 5 gallons compost, incorporate really well into the compost, and add a bit of water. While waiting for the worms to move to the bottom of the pile, hose down and scrub binsA  with a cleaning brush, taking special care to clean the vent holes. Here are a few benefits of vermicomposting in order to produce a high quality fertilizer for your garden. Composting your organic waste brings a variety of benefits to your garden, providing a nutrient-rich material to feed plants, helping them to thrive.
Like conventional composting, vermicomposting is a process of breaking down organic waste, including food peelings, garden cuttings, tea bags, coffee grounds and eggshells. Worm castings are also rich in humic acid, a substance that maintains the overall quality of your vermicompost. One of the most effective ways to encourage wildlife into your garden is by introducing a pond.
Patagonia's unique approach to revealing information on their manufacturing process is something all aspiring green businesses could take a tip from. Did you know that according to studies conducted by the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, worms are very efficient eating machines and can eat over half their body weight in organic matter per day. The organic matter produced by vermicompost can hold up to nine times its own weight in water. With utilizing worm you can help to speed up the composting process because the worms will eat and process the organic waste much faster than allowing micro-organisms to do all the work alone. I am so excited as I will be starting my first vermicomposting container this week!  I will share the process with you next Friday so be sure to check back! Earthworm castings contain high amounts of beneficial bacteria, humus, humic acids, enzymes and many other beneficial natural compounds which increase plant healthy, disease resistance, soil health and much more. In technical terms, worm composting involves the bioxidative degradation of organic wastes via the joint action of earth worms and microorganisms.
Aside from the obvious difference of utilizing worms while regular composting does not, worm composting is also a cooler (mesophilic) type of composting.
Short DescriptionEarthworm castings contain high amounts of beneficial bacteria, humus, humic acids, enzymes and many other beneficial natural compounds which increase plant healthy, disease resistance, soil health and much more.
Composting can be categorized into different categories depending on the nature of decomposition process. Aerobic composting is the process by which organic wastes are converted into compost or manure in presence of air. There are a variety of methods for aerobic composting, the most common being the Heap Method, where organic matter needs to be divided into three different types and to be placed in a heap one over the other, covered by a thin layer of soil or dry leaves.
Vermicomposting is a type of composting in which certain species of earthworms are used to enhance the process of organic waste conversion and produce a better end-product.
The level of nutrients in compost depends upon the source of the raw material and the species of earthworm.
A wide range of agricultural residues, such as straw, husk, leaves, stalks, weeds etc can be converted into vermicompost.
There are nearly 3600 types of earthworms which are divided into burrowing and non-burrowing types. The types of vermicomposting depend upon the amount of producton and composting structures. The worm castings contain higher percentage of both macro and micronutrients than the garden compost. A relatively new product from vermicomposting is vermicompost tea which is a liquid produced by extracting organic matter, microorganisms, and nutrients from vermicompost.
Central solutions are exemplified by low-cost composting without forced aeration, and technologically more advanced systems with forced aeration and temperature feedback. The methodology of composting can be categorized into three major segments—anaerobic composting, aerobic composting, and vermicomposting. Aerobic composting is the process by which organic wastes are converted into compost or manure in presence of air and can be of different types. Berkley Method uses a labor-intensive technique and has precise requirements of the material to be composted. Vermicomposting involves use of earthworms as natural and versatile bioreactors for the process of conversion. Vermicomposting is the process of composting using worms to digest the food waste, manures, or other organic inputs. The numerous benefits of vermicompost make it a terrific option for many commercial and industrial sites. Vermicompost fertilizer doesn’t only have increased nutrient levels that are readily available for the plant to use, but adds micro-organisms to the soil which it enriches and creates greater aeration properties.

As for plant growth, vermicompost helps speed up the growth cycle right from germination leading to increased yield. Economically speaking, vermicomposting is a very cost effective procedure meaning it can be efficiently mass-produced even in agricultural areas that are not as well established or don’t have advanced technology. ProRganix is a small business based in Lexington, Kentucky which produces vermicompost fertilizer.
Dan personally believes in the need to reduce the levels of synthetic manufacturing processes in our daily lives.

Letter From The EditorAs the editor of PowerHouse Growers Group (PHG), I strive to ensure that our content is timely, well-researched, and on the cutting edge of urban agriculture and sustainability. The best source is an active worm bin which is at the far end of the cycle and is almost completely castings and worms. Buying from suppliers who are selling adults only by the pound will result in a slower start to your bin.
Kitchen scraps are almost purely greens and would be a disaster if they were the only ingredient for an outdoor pile.
This is based on ecological and biological principles, often using patterns that occur in nature to maximise effect and minimise work. In this article I will discuss some important tips for creating and using organic gardening compost.
If you are preparing the compost by yourself then you must add equal amounts of green (leaves) and soft materials to prepare an ideal blend. Although you can directly purchase ready made compost from the store but creating your own compost will be fun.
The “end” product, called castings, is full of beneficial microbes and nutrients, and makes a great plant fertilizer.
Lay bricks on their side, this is to give the top container space to let the worm tea drip out.
One you get a good batch of Humus, let me know and I will tell you how to seperate the worms from the humus so that you can add it to your garden or turn some into worm tea. The problem with leachate is that it can contain all sorts of compounds produced in partially composted or anaerobic waste materials – some of these can actually be phytotoxic – that is to say they can harm or kill plants. There is no real right way, however there are a few things to consider to avoid some of the wrong ways. You will need to think about tank size verse grow bed size and what type of medium (or soil) will you use?
The tank is a 750 liter re-purposed food grade cart dug 16 inches into the ground then covered with bricks for aesthetics.
This bed drains into a similar style bed below that is slightly larger, but with no grow medium.
The resulting castings enrich soil by improving texture, increasing nitrogen, trace minerals, and natural growth hormones from the worms themselves.
They are often mistaken for and even found with Eisenia andrei whose coloring is more red, but is of about the same size.A  Both worms perform best at 77aµ’ Fahrenheit and will tolerate temperatures from 32-95aµ’ Fahrenheit, with moisture levels at about 80-85%. Mix compost and food together really well in your 18 gallon rubber tub.A  Using a drill and paint mixer for this will speed up the mixing process.
Vermicomposting works in a similar way to a conventional compost heap, but uses worms, in addition to microbes and bacteria, to turn organic waste into fertilizer.
The resulting compost can be used to provide essential nutrients to plants in your garden, allowing them to thrive. The process is generally much quicker than conventional composting techniques, with redworms being some of the quickest worms to digest organic matter, meaning your compost supplies are more regularly replenished. Humic acid acts to bind together minerals and nutrients in the compost, protecting them from UV damage and from being washed away through watering or rainfall.
Diversity is the biggest enemy of plant diseases and mites and makes soil conditions more difficult for them to grow and spread, protecting your crops from the dangers that diseases can bring. On the other hand, worms have the ability to eat through a massive amount of waste in much less time. This would make a huge difference in the need to water your plants.  The water is held at an organic level so tends to evaporate slower while still being available to nourish the plants. Although a lot depends on the conditions, what type of worms you use, initial bedding used and what you are feeding the worms, it takes approximately three months to transform organic wastes into vermicompost.  Other than setting up your vermicompost container, you will simple need to feed your worms and let them do the work. Geeky definitions aside, worm composting is simply a form of aerobic composting that involves the use of specialized worms to help break down organic waste materials.
Not only is a hot composting stage not required, but it is actually something that needs to be avoided in order to keep the worms alive (although, if the system has enough room for the worms to spread out they should be able to move away from the hot zones).
The three major segments of composting are anaerobic composting, aerobic composting, and vermicomposting. In this process, aerobic microorganisms break down organic matter and produce carbon dioxide, ammonia, water, heat and humus, the relatively stable organic end-product. This heap needs to be mixed every week, and it takes about three weeks for conversion to take place. Apart from other nutrients, a fine worm cast is rich in NPK which are in readily available form and are released within a month of application.
Other potential feedstock for vermicompost production are livestock wastes, poultry litter, dairy wastes, food processing wastes, organic fraction of MSW, bagasse, digestate from biogas plants etc. Unlike vermicompost and compost, this tea may be applied directly to plant foliage, reportedly to enhance disease suppression.
Markets include home improvement centers, nurseries, landscape contractors, greenhouses, garden supply stores, grocery chains, flower shops, discount houses, and the general public. Central composting plants are capable of handling more than 100,000 tons of biodegradable waste per year, but typically the plant size is about 10,000 to 30,000 tons per year.
The composting process occurs when biodegradable waste is piled together with a structure allowing for oxygen diffusion and with a dry matter content suiting microbial growth. The most common is the Heap Method, where organic matter needs to be divided into three different types and to be placed in a heap one over the other, covered by a thin layer of soil or dry leaves. It is carried out in specially designed pits where earthworm culture also needs to be done. Locations such as Ground Zero Memorial Project and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, Centennial Park in Atlanta, Huntsville International Airport, the Clinton Presidential Library in Little Rock AR, and the Georgia World Congress Center have all used vermicompost at their sites. Vermicompost-fertilized soil also has greater water retention capabilities meaning lower water consumption in your garden. Soil that has been fertilized with vermicompost is enriched by increased microbial activity which delivers greater levels of plant hormones and strengthens root structure. Vermicomposting also reduces the amount of waste going to landfills lowering greenhouse gas emissions generated by landfills.
Dan Storm, the owner of the company has been vermicomposting since he was five years old when his Cherokee grandfather taught him. He’s on a mission to provide gardeners with the most natural option available to them while preserving the state of the surrounding environment. You cannot just dig up some worms from the soil outside for your worm bin unless you live on a working ranch or dairy farm and have a large manure pile several months old to dig in. Buying adults only from a bait shop will work, but will put you weeks or even months behind while waiting for the next generation to come along.
Permaculture aims to create stable, productive systems that provide for human needs, harmoniously integrating the land with its inhabitants.
In this way, permaculture has become a form of architecture of nature and ecology as well as an informal institution of alternative social ideals.
If you are trying to grow your organic garden then you must use a soil which is rich in minerals and nutrients. For further balancing your organic gardening compost mixture, add hard and brown material (chopped twigs, dead leaves). You can add several other things from your household such as peat moss, vegetable peels, seedless weeds and even fruit.
So, vermicomposting is the practice of using worms to make compost simply by feeding them your food waste.
If you dilute the leachate with aged water and aerate it for 24 hours or so, it should be fine. Corinna’s understanding, love and respect for livestock, gardening, worms, and natural flora and fauna began when she was a young girl living on a ranch in Wyoming.

Vermicomposting takes place in a worm bin, containing worms which consume and digest organic matter.
This allows plants to enjoy the benefits of added nutrients for longer, helping them to thrive.
Introducing growth hormones to your plants often leads to earlier germination and produces bigger fruit and vegetables without the need for chemical fertilizers. It is also known as ‘vermicomposting’, and is closely related to ‘vermiculture’ and ‘worm farming’ – although those terms general imply a great focus on the growing of the worms themselves, rather than on the waste processing and compost production side of the equation. Although aerobic composting may produce intermediate compounds such as organic acids, aerobic microorganisms decompose them further. Earthworms feeds the organic waste materials and passes it through their digestive system and gives out in a granular form (cocoons) which is known as vermicompost. Vermicompost enhances plant growth, suppresses disease in plants, increases porosity and microbial activity in soil, and improves water retention and aeration.
The non-burrowing earthworms eat 10 percent soil and 90 percent organic waste materials; these convert the organic waste into vermicompost faster than the burrowing earthworms. On the other hand, large-scale vermicomposting is done at commercial scale by recycling large quantities of organic waste in modern facilities with the production of more than hundreds of tons annually.
Vermicompost tea also may be applied to the soil as a supplement between compost applications to increase biological activity.
The first stage of the biological activity is the consumption of easily available sugars by bacteria, which causes a fast rise in temperature. Biodegradable wastes must be separated prior to composting: Only pure foodwaste, garden waste, wood chips, and to some extent paper are suitable for producing good-quality compost. Organic matter may be collected in pits and covered with a thick layer of soil and left undisturbed six to eight months. A fertilizing product that has been around for many years but has never really gained mass consumer traction is vermicompost-produced products.
Vermicompost can be used in soil remediation projects, can help prevent erosion, and can support in making non-arable land arable. Additionally, vermicompost products can also help improve the plants resistance to disease. His process, while similar to other vermicomposting companies is unique as it isn’t a manure input based product. You also have no idea what the bait shop worms have been exposed to in the way of pesticides and chemicals and in most cases the owner of the shop doesn’t know either. The ecological processes of plants, animals, their nutrient cycles, climatic factors and weather cycles are all part of the picture. Most of the soils are not rich in minerals and nutrients which are essential for healthy growth of the plants. For larger compost piles you can use PVC pipes as most of the people have been successful with it. Well prepared and nutrient rich soil will assure you a healthy and beautiful organic garden in your near future.
One of the first things that you will need to consider is your space requirements and budget.
This bed then drains directly back into the tank that is filled with over 20 tiliapia of different stages of growth. These days the Fritz family are small business owners and novice homesteaders on 6 acres of land in the temperate rain forest of Washington state. The intestinal tract of the redworm adds concentrated nutrients to the resulting compost, and vermicompost generally contains 5 to 11 times more nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium than normal soil, allowing plants to thrive.
This compost can then be added to your garden to greatly enrich your soil and add great nutritional benefits.
The resultant compost, with its relatively unstable form of organic matter, has little risk of phytotoxicity. Mixing has to be done every 15 days, and there is no fixed time in which the compost may be ready. Simply speaking, vermicompost is earthworm excrement, called castings, which can improve biological, chemical, and physical properties of the soil.
They can tolerate temperatures ranging from 0 to 40°C but the regeneration capacity is more at 25 to 30°C and 40–45 percent moisture level in the pile. Vermicompost also benefits the environment by reducing the need for chemical fertilizers and decreasing the amount of waste going to landfills. Lately there has been more and more interest in this type of fertilizer and it’s become readily available to end-user gardeners.
The correct worms for vermicomposting are manure worms which are know as red wigglers in the fishing trade.
Inhabitants’ needs are provided for using proven technologies for food, energy, shelter and infrastructure.
Once you have these two prerequisites worked out you can begin thinking about other things. There are advantages and disadvantages to each system, some out weighing others on a level of personal preference, others on more of a technical level.
Redworms and red wigglers are the most commonly used worms in this process, and a healthy worm bin can continue to provide you with a free and natural fertilizer for many years. Anaerobic microorganisms dominate and develop intermediate compounds including methane, organic acids, hydrogen sulphide and other substances.
The heat generated accelerates the breakdown of proteins, fats and complex carbohydrates such as cellulose and hemicellulose. The chemical secretions in the earthworm’s digestive tract help break down soil and organic matter, so the castings contain more nutrients that are immediately available to plants.
Vermicompost production is trending up worldwide and it is finding increasing use especially in Western countries, Asia-Pacific and Southeast Asia. For the most part it’s incredibly natural, organic, and cost-effective – and the additional benefits are abundant. The natural digestive process of the worms actually increases the nutrient content in the compost as compared traditional composts. Now, ProRganix is producing 200 tons per week of hormone-free, GMO-free and synthetic fertilizer free vermicompost. The whole mix is wet down until damp as a wet sponge – damp to touch but you should not be able to wring water out of it. Elements in a system are viewed in relationship to other elements, where the outputs of one element become the inputs of another.
Addition of compost will provide your soil the necessary amount of organic matter and will make your soil rich in minerals and nutrients.
If you have the option I would recommend trying to experiment with a couple of different systems in an attempt to see what ultimately works out best for you and your environment.
The process is low-temperature, slow and the compost formed may not be completely converted and may include aggregated masses and phytotoxic compounds. The resulting fertilizer product that Dan is selling now to wholesalers is a 100% pure vermicompost. Moreover, this process destroys many micro-organisms that are human or plant pathogens, as well as weed seeds, provided it undergoes sufficiently high temperature. Vermicompost (the product of vermicomposting) can be used as a fertilizer or soil conditioner to stimulate plant growth both on small and large farming scales. The production process itself is zero-waste, self-watering, and totally natural and organic which comes with Dan’s own personal quality control assurance. Permaculture principles can be applied to any environment, at any scale from dense urban settlements to individual homes, from farms to entire regions.
Although more nutrients are lost from the materials by aerobic composting, it is considered more efficient and useful than anaerobic composting for agricultural production. Consumers can even create their own vermicompost at home to feed to their plants, with the right guidance. As for the fertilizer product, ProRganix promotes superior seed growth for better economic return and healthier food growth for safer consumption.
