An award-winning steakhouse restaurant has invested in staff training to improve its overall business operations and the experience delivered to its deaf customers. Staff at the Hawksmoor steakhouse in Spitalfields, London attended an in-house British Sign Language (BSL) training workshop to help them communicate better with each other across the busy restaurant floor but also with their customers who are BSL users. Joiners, plumbers and electricians from a North Yorkshire housing provider have been given a down to earth and surprising insight into the relevance of Equality and Diversity in the workplace.
Deaf customers can expect a warm welcome in cinemas across the country from staff who are attending a bespoke training workshop to improve their knowledge and confidence thanks to national lottery players. A housing association employee was so inspired by the training that his employer organised a€“ he decided to study for the full qualification himself and has now passed with flying colours. Nick Dine who works as a plumber and trainer at Yorkshire-based housing provider, Incommunities, attended a series of one-hour bitesize disability awareness training sessions to support and help staff deliver a more inclusive and accessible service to customers. A Lancashire-based equality and disability training provider has reached the finals for a national award for the awareness training it has delivered in partnership with Chiltern Railways. Award winning training and consultancy company, HearFirst has made the shortlist in the Subcontractor of the Year Micro category of the UK Rail Industry Awards for the training it has delivered to all new staff joining Chiltern to enhance services for their disabled customers.
The former Dragons' Den star chose HearFirst as one of his 'Small Business Sunday' winners last week.

Staff and customers from Together Housing Group (THG) have attended a disability equality awareness training course to understand more about disability and delivering a more inclusive and accessible service in their communities.



Staff from Universities and Colleges Union (UCU) Yorkshire and Humberside have been learning the practicalities and developing their skills and knowledge to create a more inclusive workplace. The Deaf awareness training for hearing colleagues course was delivered to the organisation and tailored specifically to their employees' requirements. The training was also delivered by HearFirst tutors who are deaf themselves, which adds real purpose, relevance and depth to the training. The aim of the course was to build confidence and knowledge on how to best support their visitors and also to encourage them to become aware of their own wellbeing. Staff from a North London-based specialist care provider have attended a visual awareness training course to understand and improve the services they deliver to one of their residents who is completely blind.
Organisations across the country are supporting a national campaign this week with the same aim of helping to raise awareness of the importance of inclusion in the workplace and the business benefits to having an inclusive workforce.
Employers such as the Home Office, Creative Support, Oldham Council and housing-providers, Together Housing Group and Incommunities have all pledged their support to National Inclusion Week a€“ a week of activities focusing on the awareness they raise and the difference they can make within the workplace. Ofsted's new Common Inspection Framework for Further Education and Skills Providers looks at the standard of Equality and Diversity practices in terms of teaching, learning and assessment. The Anthony Seddon Fund, which was established to raise awareness and educate people about the issues of mental health problems in young people, has funded a training course to help teaching staff at Samuel Laycock School in Ashton-under-Lyne. Staff from Yorkshire-based housing provider, Incommunities, have benefitted from a series of disability awareness training sessions, which will help support them to deliver a more inclusive and accessible service to customers. Staff from The Dukes theatre in Lancaster have put the training they received from HearFirst into action by making a number of changes that will improve the overall experience for their customers. Over twenty members of staff attended the training last summer to gain an insight into the relevance and value of Equality and Diversity. Over 200 members of staff from Together Housing Group (THG) have attended bespoke training to raise awareness and understanding of the importance of Equality and Diversity in the workplace. Apprentices and Interns working in the House of Commons Service have received Deaf awareness training as part of their induction programme. The new Visitor Team that has been recruited at the Whitworth, part of The University of Manchester, has been learning new skills through a series of training sessions, which aim to help them provide an excellent visitor experience. The training is part of an overall strategy to ensure confidence in the team as they welcome back their visitors following a £15 million redevelopment that has transformed the 125 year old Whitworth into a 21st century gallery in the park.
Staff and volunteers who run programmes for people with learning disabilities have been improving their communication skills after attending a Makaton language programme, which helps them to use signs and symbols alongside speech. More than a dozen housing association residents from across the UK have attended an Equality and Diversity training course to understand how to embed equality and inclusion and help their landlord meet its obligations under the Equality Act.
The residents, who are all ex-offenders, are part of an Equality and Diversity focus group which looks at how their landlord, Langley House Trust (LHT), makes decisions from an equality point of view. The progress file is then used to inform careers advice and guidance, the selection of work-related learning opportunities, mock interviews and the development of personal statements. The overall objective of effective CEIAG provision is to enable learners to become effective career decision makers, empowered to manage their own career development successfully, confidently and with due respect and care for their own needs, those of others and of their communities.

We received a boost after learning that we've been shortlisted in the 175th Royal Association for Deaf People (RAD) awards as 'Best Deaf business'.
