There are many causes for swollen feet and ankles.  Most are likely to resolve quickly, however, some of the causes can be the sign of a health concern which needs to be addressed. When the swelling affects only one of your feet, most likely the swelling is the result of a local problem, ie an injury or a problem with one of the veins.  Swelling in both feet is considered a systemic problem – a problem which affects the entire body. 1)  Pitting Edema:  Usually results from water retention and is associated with things such as heart failure, pregnancy and systemic diseases. 2)    Non-pitting Edema: Is the most common type of foot swelling, usually a result of injury.
Soft tissue injuries of the foot and leg can lead to localised swelling.  The severity of the swelling can depend on the injury.
Liver disease can cause a change in the levels of hormones and fluid-regulating chemicals leading to fluid retention. Swelling from arthritis tends to be sporadic, coming and going at different times.  It is most commonly caused by active inflammatory synovitis (inflammation of the membrane that lines the joint) associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
Severe swelling of feet in pregnancy can be a sign of pre-eclampsia which is a medical emergency. Veins work to pump blood back up from the feet and legs to the heart through one-way valves.  If these valves stop working properly due to weakness or damage, fluid can seep back down and pool causing a swollen ankle and foot. Cellulitis is treated with antibiotics and can last anything from a few days to a number of months. Please note: the information provided is of a general nature and should not be used as a diagnosis! One of the most effective treatments to reduce swelling is applying ice cold water on the swollen area. You can use a clean cloth and soak it in hot water, wring it and then apply on the swollen part. The astringent apple cider vinegar (ACV) helps to remove fluid retention in the body and initiates healing process quickly. If the swelling is caused by excess salt in your body, then cut down salt from your diet at the earliest. Wearing compression stockings, sleeves or gloves accordingly will help reducing the swelling in limbs. It is true that your edematic condition is the result of water retention in the tissue, but however, you need to drink enough liquids to bring down the swelling.
If it is accompanied by fever, shortness of breath, skin disfiguration or weight loss or gain, you should seek immediate medical attention. Swelling occurs in a condition where the ankles, lower legs and feet muscles have an excessive buildup of a fluid.
She has always have problem with swollen her both lower legs to both foot and Dr Agrawal, from Rain Cross Clinic in Riverside CA, gave her Water Pill which name Furnsonside (spelling) but it is NOT help at all to reduced.
Your problem and mine may be totally unrelated, but I also had and still do have this problem. When I first discovered this, I waited near a week, assuming that I may have had some extra water retention this month due to a menstrual cycle.
I live in a area where these doctors for these problems are not available to me unless I want to travel quite a distance. I read the comments from Debbie Canavan about the swelling in just one foot( the right one).
Hey Debbie I have the same exact problem, and I think that it is from wearing flip flops, I wear them almost all year long, and i noticed this started happening last year, and it started again a few months ago.
For me it started happening when standing for prolonged periods of times (12 hours per day for 7 days) and wearing shoes that wear a tiny bit big on me.
Doctors have a nebulous catch-all phrase, chronic venous insufficiency or CVI, to describe vein circulation problems. Any activity that may add strain to the circulatory system or constrict the flow of blood may be a contributing factor. Clothing that is too tight, including shoes or boots, will restrict circulation and may be the cause of your varicose veins by not allowing the blood to properly flow through your body.
An unusual form of varicose veins affects over 200,000 women who suffer from chronic pelvic pain. Rubbing your legs with some sort of soothing lotion such as St John's wort oil, lanolin, or massage oil will relax the leg muscles and improve circulation.
As part of dietary changes a program to lose weight will greatly help prevent or ease varicose vein problems. As with so many diseases, there are underlying nutritional problems, that, if corrected, may well alleviate or eliminate the disease. Bromelain This nutrient aids in activating a factor that promotes the breakdown of fibrin and help prevent blood clots. Vitamin C and bioflavonoids to aid circulation, promote healing of sores, and strengthen vein walls. Lecithin Take one tablespoon of granules (or two capsules) daily to emulsify fats and aid circulation. Tissue salts Take two tablets of 6X Calcium Fluoride, mornings and evenings, to improve elasticity of blood vessel walls. Vitamin E Take 300 to 800 IU, in gradually increased doses, to promote and improve circulation.
Apple cider vinegar The old stand by - apple cider vinegar - has shown significant benefits for relieving varicose veins. Another variation of this remedy is to apply straight vinegar night and morning using a cupped hand. For another remedy, mix three tablespoons of sugar, two tablespoons of vinegar, and one pint of warm water.
Aspirin An aspirin a day may relieve the pain of varicose veins by thinning the blood, thereby making it easier to circulate. Chlorophyll Chlorophyll provides stronger blood which helps revitalize the vascular system in the legs. Epsom salts Alternating 2 minute icy-cold and very hot soaks (with 2 tablespoons of epsom salts per quart of water) for ten minutes daily will stimulate circulation. Witch hazel Apply witch hazel, an astringent, twice a day to the veins, or take 10-60 drops of witch hazel tincture four times a day.
Horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) Studies done in Europe found that horse chestnut helped to increase blood flow up and out of the legs, strengthen connective tissue, tighten up veins, decrease redness and swelling, and relieve painful leg conditions caused by poor circulation.
Pycnogenol, sometimes sold as OPC or PCO, made from pine bark extract, significantly improves symptoms of CVI. This tiny cluster of bacteria is methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), seen under a microscope. Bug bites, rashes, and other skin problems can be confused with MRSA because the symptoms are similar. ER doctors often ask patients who think they have a spider bite whether they saw the spider. MRSA can also lead to cellulitis, an infection of the deeper layers of skin and the tissues beneath them.

Without proper, timely care, the bacteria can cause a minor infection site to become an abscess -- a painful lump under the skin that’s filled with pus.
MRSA is spread by touching an infected person or exposed item when you have an open cut or scrape. Hospitals are the main sources of MRSA infections due to the high traffic of ill or wounded patients. It looks like MRSA has jumped from humans to household pets, where it can linger without clear symptoms. MRSA can spread from a small, contained infection to one that involves your internal organs and body systems. Frequent hand washing with soap and water and using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer are great ways to avoid MRSA. 49th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, San Francisco, Sept.

Today's post is the fourth in a series that shares information from a recent H2U seminar lead by Naveen Setty, MD. Medical Center of McKinney has been routinely recognized for its expert team of surgeons and medical specialists.
The reason for this is that excess body fat compresses the leg and abdominal veins, this increases pressure within the blood vessels which then promotes fluid leakage into the soft tissues – swelling the feet and ankles. Apply hot compress a couple of days after the cold compress as heat dilates the blood flow and improves circulation. Dilute ACV with water in the 1:3 ratios respectively and apply on the affected part with a cloth. Too much salt can result in water retention in the body. Eat a low sodium diet and avoid high salted junk food, especially wafers, chips, pretzels or other crackers. This is because the compression wears help in keeping extra pressure on the affected limbs thereby avoiding then chance of water retention in the tissue and encouraging softening of the fluid-swollen areas.
Drinking water will remove excess toxins in the body and has various therapeutic effects as well.If you cannot drink too much water, ensure you eat fruits and vegetables loaded with water such as watermelon, cucumber, celery and the like. Other remedies like grape seed extract, garlic oil capsules and barley water also works best in bringing down swelling. If you get pineapples, you have found your remedy. Also, if you eat food rich in carbohydrates, sometimes mild condition of edema might develop.
Swelling can be simply defined as the situation in which thickness of the skin increases due to some systematic symptoms. PYLORI bacteria due exposure to arsenic e coli, fecal matter nitrate and chem exposure through our mobile home parks private well. If anyone has had a problem with this and can shed some light on this for me I’d greatly appreciate it.
For just a moment, both feet were swelling, now the left foot has reduced its swelling and yet my right foot is so swollen still (feel as if my foot resembles the puffer fish). In fact it started with only pain in the ball of my foot, but no swelling, and only pain when I was barefooted. The veins most commonly affected by this problem are the ones just under the skin, called superficial veins. All this means is that a person's vein circulation system is failing and blood is backing up either in the tissues or the veins. Blood carrying nutrients to the cells is pumped from the heart through the arteries to the legs.
Prolonged standing or sitting, lifting heavy weights, long-distance running, lack of exercise and obesity are some of the factors to be considered.
Snug fitting girdles, pantyhose, belts, and boots and shoes, especially high-heels, cut off circulation, thus forcing blood to seek alternative routes or causing back-pressure on the veins. Use a recliner or ottoman when reading or watching TV, or if you read in bed, elevate your feet with cushions or pillows. Exercise and dietary changes to lose weight will be very beneficial to relieving varicose veins. Begin slowly to build up tolerance; jump one minute per session and slowly build up to 5 minutes. Gently massaging with an upward motion with your palms or fingertips and occasionally squeezing your legs will help force blood out of the veins in your legs and back to the heart. Carrying too much weight creates extra pressure on your heart and interferes with circulation. Veins that are undergoing pressure from some of the factors mentioned above will have a tendency to bulge out and become noticeable varicose veins.
To accelerate the results, after each session slowly drink a glass of warm water with two teaspoons of the vinegar.
This will stop the pain in your legs and reduce the varicose veins by making the blood flow better.
One of its compounds, Aescin, has been found to close the small pores in the walls of the veins, making them less permeable. This strain of the common "staph" bacteria causes infections in different parts of the body -- including the skin, lungs, and other areas.
It's also seen in older people, those living in nursing homes, and people with weakened immune systems.
Contact a health care provider, who will swab a sample of the area and send it to a lab for testing. Oral antibiotics can treat MRSA, but because it doesn’t respond to many common drugs like methicillin, amoxicillin, penicillin, oxacillin, and cephalorsporins, your doctor may use clindamycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, or linezolid. It has approved three new antibiotics in the past few years: Dalvance (dalbavancin) and Orbactiv (oritavancin), which you get through an IV, and Sivextro (tedizolid phosphate), a pill that you take every day. Stopping early can cause the infection to come back or allow the MRSA bacteria to become immune to the drugs that still work. Wipe down surfaces you come into contact with at the gym and shower promptly after any skin-to-skin contact. It is intended for general informational purposes only and does not address individual circumstances. Frequent use can increase the size of the cyst so your doctor may prescribe a brace to limit movement. On dit que l' oedeme prend le godet .Points importantsLe liquide responsable des oedemes parcourt les tissus de la meme facon que dans une eponge, c'est a dire qu'il suit la pesanteur. If you are inactive, this inactivity leads to blood pooling, which further increases pressure within the leg veins. Cold helps to contract the blood vessels, which reduces swelling. The same applies with hot water compress as well.
You can gently massage the area with the oil or soak the mustard seeds in water and use the solution to massage the affected area. The fruit has a high content of bromelain that helps in hindering the compounds that result in causing water retention in the body. It occurs as a result of some systematic conditions such as injuries, infections, fracture, diseases of joints etc. But during pregnancy, water pills should not be used as treatment for swelling because it can be harmful for the health of mother and child.

I have a severe case of H Pylori and have had it for some years as recently I was forced to see a doctor when my abdomen felt like it had a blockage in the gut. He said that since it was in only one foot, my left one, and not only was my foot always swollen, but my leg also. Along with the increased swelling in my right foot, the skin feels so tight and it is so sore when I walk and at times just sitting or laying down it can be rather sore as well. But I sure would very much appreciate ANY advice, suggestions or possible diagnosis from a professional without having to travel so far if its even possible. I went out last night and had no problems other than tired maybe when I went to bed around midnight. I had this for 11 days until I twisted my foot, and the swelling added to the pain except now the pain is on the upper part and not only the ball of the foot. My blood work comes back next Tuesday and I am going to be going to an orhhopedic or other type of foot specialist because I am convinced my problem will NOT be any of the two options he gave me. Besides the obvious swelling of the veins, symptoms are aching legs, muscle cramps and a feeling of heaviness in the legs. The depleted blood then returns to the heart through the venous system - veins having one-way valves.
If you are pregnant of if your occupation puts a lot of stress on your legs, wear support stockings. Constipation may restrict the blood as it returns to the torso through the deep veins in the legs. People with varicose veins need to have moderate exercise as opposed to more strenuous forms, such as high-impact aerobics, jogging, strenuous cycling or other activities that increase the blood pressure in the veins. Twice a day apply cheesecloth or other bandages saturated with vinegar to the legs for 30 minutes.
Because of poor circulation the blood does not have enough oxygen and minerals to nourish the veins.
A chronic disease like diabetes, cancer, or HIV raises your chances of coming down with this stubborn infection. These outbreaks -- called community-associated MRSA -- are seen at schools, gyms, day care centers and other places where people share close quarters. A few ways to protect yourself: Cover scrapes before playing in the sand, wash your hands often, shower when you come out of the water, and don’t wear a swimsuit again without washing it. Keep the sore covered until it has healed and change the bandages when your doctor's tells you to.
It is not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment and should not be relied on to make decisions about your health.
If it is continues to cause discomfort or affects hand movement, your doctor may try to aspirate the cyst with an needle.
You can bring down the swelling by raising your leg for few minutes. Remember that the exact cause behind the swelling is to be identified first. Persistent or excessive swelling may causes damage to the skin if proper medical treatment is not taken. They ran a whole panel of labs on cvc and that included for any kidney, liver or heart abnormalities, yet it all checked out just fine. I’m getting rather worked up and scared in fear that my feet will need to be amputated or it will cause a possible fatality here.
Also my doctor put me on a antiflammatory which I don’t like because it gets me dizzy. If one or more aggravating factors are present, the swollen, distorted veins, which are called varicose veins, may develop.
Aging, pregnancy, hormonal changes, and dietary deficiencies are also contributing factors. Make sure it is the kind that is tighter at the ankles, gradually decreasing the pressure as they get higher up the leg. Walking, weight training, low-impact aerobics and swimming are a few of the preferred means of exercise, but anything that helps shift your weight or standing or sitting position will help. Consistent exercise over several months will generally reduce the throbbing and aching often associated with varicose veins. Take horse chestnut capsules containing 50-300 mg of aescin 2-3 times a day, or 1-5 drops of horse chestnut tincture three times a day.
Never ignore professional medical advice in seeking treatment because of something you have read on the WebMD Site. It is important to note that the cyst can return 50% of the time and some cysts do not respond to this treatment at all. In time, I suppose I will need to go to any length to see a doctor, but much rather avoid it if I possibly can. Please, I will be very grateful to get any insight on my condition here.
If Debbie is answered on this problem please write to me also as we seem to be having the same problem going on.
Now both feet and both ankles are swollen huge and hurt like they’re bruised but ache too. By only taking three pills it solved the problem, except from standing my foot gets back to being swollen. Age and extra weight, especially in the hips and waist regions, are some of the contributing factors. As the blood backs up it takes another course through superficial veins, thus the blue streaks in the legs.
If you have a bad problem, take short breaks several times a day and walk around and stretch. Subsequently, adjust the dose to 1 mg for every two pounds of weight for a month, then 20-50 mg daily for maintenance. I substituted with Advil, but I would basically have to be on it every day because my foot goes back to being swollen again and again and again.
This situation, which is described in more detail in our section on hemorrhoids, is caused by constipation, improper diet, and sitting too long in a seat without enough padding. With age, the valves and veins become weaker, and muscle mass and tone tend to decrease, thereby impeding the return of blood to the heart and increasing the risk of developing varicose veins. As part of our recommended wellness program, we suggest a diet low in fats and refined carbohydrates, and high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Avoid horse chestnut if you have liver or kidney disease or if you are pregnant or breast feeding. However, it is always recommended to have a cyst like this evaluated to be sure the swelling is not due to an injury or another cause.
She got tired of same medicine and never finally get better and no more swollen… Please HELP. They did this within a couple of hours and I can’t think of anything unusual I might have done to cause it.
These factors may cause the valve to leak or fail, allowing blood to accumulate in the veins, causing them to stretch. This diet promotes health for the entire body, and, in the case of constipation, the high-fiber diet promotes regularity. Unlike diuretics, horse chestnut is unlikely to cause potassium deficiency or other side effects. Please see our Constipation section for an in-depth discussion of causes of and remedies for constipation.
My feet are starting to become very painful and every time I look at my feet, I become very frustrated.
I don’t know why me feet are swollen, it could be water, medication, but I do sit a lot, because my back becomes very painful from standing and walking and sometimes doing a little garden work.
