By being set primarily inside of the main character’s apartment, The Room takes what most of us consider to be a safe sanctuary, and turns it into a living nightmare. Condemned blends classical survival-horror themes of vulnerability and tension with an action-oriented combat system.
When it works, Condemned is engaging and scary, and when it doesn't, the failings are ludicrous enough you can write them off to video game logic and keep playing, confident that something terrifying waits just around the corner. Like Resident Evil and Silent Hill, it forced players to feel confined and almost incapable of dealing with the frantic horrors before them. The original Resident Evil was one of the games that helped usher in the survival horror genre, and really helped inform what the core pillars of an interactive horror experience should be. A remastered version is coming to most platforms in 2015, meaning that most of us will be able to once-again experience one of the definitive moments in survival horror. Resident Evil 2 is archetypal survival horror, with a gothic setting, delightfully nonsensical puzzles, good sound design, and terrible tank controls. The unapologetically corny story ripped off the best elements of drive-in science fiction and horror.
Amnesia perfectly encapsulates the helpless feeling of being alone, defenseless, hunted, and yet goads you deeper with the promise of revealing its terrible secrets. Eternal Darkness combines traditional survival horror gameplay with a fantastic Lovecraftian universe, but its real strengths lie in what is achieves on its own.
Sanity Effects sound like a cheap gimmick, but having to maintain your characters' wits throughout each of Eternal Darkness' distinct short stories creates another layer of tension on an already tense and stressful survival game. When your heroes start losing their minds, and fail to cope with the horrors around them, Eternal Darkness becomes a survival game unlike any other -- one with memorable moments, an unforgettable story told across generations, and gameplay that betrays preconceived expectations.
System Shock 2 might give you more to work with than most survival games, but make no mistake, the horror is quite present in a very unique style. System Shock 2 might tease you into believing you are playing a traditional rpg or action game, up until ammo starts to becomes scarce, and your weapons jam or break down. The Fatal Frame series has managed to build its lineage of terror on the smart conceit of danger and horror appearing when you decide to pull up your cursed Camera Obscura.
Crimson Butterfly managed to capture a fantastic atmosphere by setting the game around the Japanese countryside and its creepy abandoned villages, and having the main character be a young, and ostensibly powerless child makes the fear that much more effective. Silent Hill 2, like its predecessor, establishes a convincing sense of place that's discomforting, underscored by an unbeatable, somber soundtrack.
So to commemorate the launch of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, I’ve gathered our team of editors to pitch in with their picks for the best and worst survival horror games of the closing generation. At the time of its release, Dead Space was the next-gen horror experience I’d been waiting for.
EA (put down those torches!) gave horror fans a gem, resulting in the genre’s very own Alien, with a good dose of The Thing influence.
While they were plenty, Dead Space wasn’t all about just pop-up scares, with the Necros bursting out of vents as if they were paid to by the hour.
And to think we were going to get a true survival horror experience at one point, by the looks of the game’s debut trailer. As for a few mentions, Deadly Premonition was pretty surprising – although it was technically a last (now twice last) gen game put on the Xbox 360. When AMY was announced, I was pretty excited to see an authentic survival horror experience come to consoles. AMY is so bad that a bug that prevented players from using all of Amy’s unlocked powers somehow snuck past QA. I won’t even focus on the terrible voice acting, the pathetic cliff hanger ending, or the many other bugs that sent me into a rage when I reviewed this game. Perhaps worst of all, the hype surrounding RE6 hit a fever pitch just before the game’s release. Our only hope now is that the series can do itself now what it made so popular – come back from the dead. While not a wholly original story, Dead Space took the best elements of franchises such as Alien, Resident Evil, Event Horizon, and System Shock to create a memorable action horror title.
The rich lore featuring a new religion, harvesting entire planets (dang it planet cracking just sounds so cool), and these horrifying creatures was clearly set up for a sequel, and Dead Space 2, while a little more action-y was still a monstrously good time.
After the first game had made it’s mark solely with a single-player campaign, the second added a humans vs. In Siren Blood Curse, you cannot kill the Shibito, which are sentient, smart zombie people that utter Japanese as they chase you.
The darkness in Blood Curse is also something to be wary of, because it not only hides enemies but some just plain creepy shit, like giant mutant heads hiding within closets and deformed monster Shibito beneath blankets. What started off as an amazing new horror IP on the PS3 and Xbox 360, Dead Space was a new up and comer to something bigger than itself, such as Resident Evil. Dead Space 3 was under pressure to broaden the audience, therefore it made a few changes and additions that, in my opinion, robbed Dead Space of what it was.
The problem is that Dead Space 3 simply has too many damn enemies, some of which are even human.
Those are my two main gripes that kick Dead Space 3 down a couple of notches from the first two games. My final verdict is that the game is fun as a co-op shooter, but it holds almost nothing for fans of the horror genre, the genre that gave Dead Space its start.
The first thing about Alan Wake that hooked me was the soundtrack, it was cinematic, but not alike so many other games that attempt to capture the same sound. Speaking of titles that turned me away from video games, it’s time to move to my pick for worst survival horror game of the generation, Capcom’s top selling game, Resident Evil 5.
The live action ads with Chris experiencing symptoms of PTSD, one where he even seemed suicidal, all had nothing to do with the game.
Alan Wake, the game, not only understands how horror should be written, it understands perfectly how it should be presented in combination with gameplay. By forcing the player as Alan Wake, the writer, to constantly be moving forward in linear levels, the actual diversion from the paths become more important and far scarier. And that’s just the gameplay design, the fact that the story is so amazingly well crafted, the atmosphere as tight as it can be and the jump-scares fresh and functional makes for a great survival horror game no matter how badly it wants to be called a psychological action thriller. But where Alan Wake, the game, can be seen as the pinnacle of modern horror, there are far too many games that did not end up as good. When you think Survival Horror and Stealth, some great games should be popping into your mind right away.
In the game you fight Nightwalkers, because calling vampires vampires when your game has vampire in the title is too silly, as the American Information Bureau Special Ops. The original Shadow Warrior from 1997 was one of the best games 3D Realms ever made, so I was very excited for the remake that launched earlier this year.
I really liked RE5 and 6, have yet to play DS3, but based on the demo, I think I will enjoy it. If those are the worst though, we should be happy, that means there weren’t that many terrible horror games this gen.
I would have to say that Alan Wake is really the only one on the list that really held any true scares. No need to apologize, it’s the cursory nature of that game’s place in this article that made me question that ?? But now I know! I find it unfortunate that I won’t get to experience some of the console exclusives like Siren or Last of Us.
Completely agree with RE6 And Dead Space 3 being on this list…they were insulting to survival horror. Alone in the woods with little more than a few days worth of food supplies and a bundle of sticks. Set in a dense city based loosely on Chicago, Nether is a first person survival horror shooter with a twist.
While the primary activity in Nether is PvP, the developers are trying to give players a reason not to shoot on sight with random public events.
Currently in Nether there isn’t much to do besides gather loot, kill Nethers, and hunt players. Nether is under development by Phosphor Games Studio and is currently available through  the Steam Early Access program, meaning it’s still in its early days. 7 Days to Die or 7DTD as it is often abbreviated is a zombie survival horror game set in the fictional post-apocalyptic region of Navezgane County, Arizona. Primarily focused around scavenging an abandoned wasteland and finding a place to build shelter, 7 Days to Die offers a fresh mix of both building and intense combat.
One of the key differences with 7DTD however is that it uses some physics based gameplay to add interesting new challenges to building. If zombies begin to gather on a floor above you it could collapse under the weight, turning your basement bunker in to a death trap. If you have ever played Minecraft and found yourself wishing it was set in a dark zombie apocalypse rather than a light-hearted fantasy world, we can highly suggest 7 Days to Die as a game you will most likely appreciate.



Set during a zombie apocalypse, The Dead Linger is an open world survival horror game that caught my attention very early on. Firstly, the game world is not only procedurally generated but it is also the size of a real planet, just let that sink in for a moment. The developers want to offer gamers a sandbox which truly lets them put their survival plan to the test. The Dead Linger features physics based gameplay, meaning players can pick up and manipulate most objects in the game. Created by indie developers Sandswept Studios, The Dead Linger is currently in Alpha and therefore being actively updated and improved. If you’re looking for a unique zombie survival game, The Dead Linger already has a bunch to keep you busy. Arguably the game that defined an entire genre and gave it mass appeal, DayZ is the game everyone reading has most likely played or is at least extremely familiar with it. The main factor that set DayZ apart was its focus on offering as realistic a survival experience as possible, resulting in it being built on tactical military shooter Arma 2’s game engine.
DayZ forces every encounter to be an all-or-nothing situation, with players dropping all of their loot upon death. DayZ is under development by Bohemia Interactive and creator of the original mod for Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead, Dean Hall. Project Zomboid is a zombie survival sandbox, therefore players can choose freely how they survive – but they must still follow basic rules such as scavenging for food and dealing with zombies.
Line of sight and perception are meaningful mechanics, players must not only worry about their physical health but also mentally with depression and moods playing a role, loot never respawns and neither do zombies, more zombies than we have seen in any similar zombie game (inb4 Dead Rising 3), extensive farming and base building. Combining action and exploration elements from Resident Evil 4 with the classic tension and dread of Alien, Dead Space felt like something new. The 2002 GameCube remake of Shinji Mikami’s classic remains the definitive edition thanks to a gorgeous and terrifying visual upgrade, a trimming of a lot of the original’s cheese-ball moments, and the surprise inclusion of Crimson Heads (think zombie-versions of zombies).

Despite the dated 3D models and terrible voice acting, Resident Evil 2 still provides ample heart-palpitating tension and numerous jump-scares. There are no weapons to be found, no saving grace besides the dim lantern that can be used sparingly to keep the darkness at bay. Without a doubt, Amnesia breathed new life into the survival horror genre with a big emphasis on survival. Combat isn't elegant, but it's empowering enough to make you feel capable -- but only in small bursts, and only until something goes wrong. The games, especially Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly, smartly use the device simultaneously as a method of delivering power, as well as stripping the player of any and all control. The PlayStation 4 is now out to play (station-ed in your living room), and the Xbox One will follow suit next Friday. Keep in mind that we’re just talking home consoles here; we all know you PC folk are always ahead of us! After coming off a golden age in survival horror with the era of the PlayStation 1 and PS2, Dead Space provided an amazing follow up to the games from those previous generations in terms of, you know, actually being a scary game that kept the genre alive and relevant. As for Silent Hill: Downpour, it was everything I wanted in terms of gameplay, from a current gen Silent Hill (exploration, more side stories, another personal story). The game stars a female protagonist by the name of Lana that has to escort a small, autistic child by the name of Amy. I tried AMY for bit after they finally patched it, but you can’t patch all of the terrible out of a game as bad as this. Everyone was counting on it to bring the series back from the death spiral it seemed to be in. EA was at a particularly rough spot, and with this and  Mirror’s Edge they were temporarily back in the good graces of gamers. But it’s also the perfect example of what has gone wrong with horror this console generation. The microtransactions, for all their controversy, were largely inoffensive and even existed in previous games.
With a remake of the first game on the PS3, I was very excited to be able to play the game with updates graphics, controls, and re-worked difficulty, as the first game was very tough and unforgiving.
The game always managed to scare me in one way or another, even with multiple play-throughs.
This ability allows players to see through the eyes of one particular monster and the screen splits in half so you can move while watching them, but you suffer a blur effect during the use of sightjacking. While it holds many similarities to the first Silent Hill, the tone of Blood Curse is much different, and frankly, scarier.
I’ve had my fingers crossed for a fourth game for a long time, and it was at one point confirmed. The first two games in the series were full of tense moments, interesting characters, a whacked out and enthralling storyline, and action horror.
In Dead Space 3, only the second player suffers from it, and only in three co-op specific side missions.
There’s plenty more that I can complain about, such as the stupid and unnecessary love triangle in the story, the shitty writing, or the ridiculous ending and tacked on DLC.
I believe it’s a prime example of what not to do for a horror, but for a pure action title.
I remember following its progress and just marveling at the fact that Remedy was taking their time with it to make sure it was as good as they could make it. Having followed every Resident Evil since the second and being a huge fan of the series, I started where everyone else did with Resident Evil 5: the teaser trailer.
Even more annoying was that slogan “fear you can’t forget”, at no point is the game frightening, Resident Evil 5 is an action game first and foremost. The unanswered mystery is what stays with us the longest, and it’s what we’ll remember in the end. In Alan Wake you constantly find yourself pushing forward, trying to figure out what’ll be around the next corner.
They say that the game is practically a corridor shooter masquerading as a survival horror game. Constantly you’ll be offered paths to walk down in other directions for exploration, be it for more manuscript pages, a radio or a coffee thermos.
It’s been the most common style of horror game this generation thanks to the sudden boom of indie games that test this method of aproach. The story is filled with cliche plottwists, scary little girls and all the stuff you expect to find in a uninspired mess, but it’s done in such a intensely dull way that the concepts feel even deader than they already are. Sadly, the game was extremely below-average: levels are completely linear, extra enemies spawn out of nowhere to pad out the combat and it was very easy.
Deadly Premonition had such a great and unique story and it used some unique ideas for it’s horror elements plus it had a great atmosphere and soundtrack which basically made it even better. Because among the many hatewagons I’ve seen, I have found none that was able to properly explain how RE5 was a better game than RE6 (or even better, why the boring RE Zero would be better than RE6) since the general consensus was that RE5 was the worst RE before. A scenario like this would make all but the most experienced survivalists uneasy, yet that’s exactly the kind of setting a lot of gamers are looking for these days. While bandits plague the streets, zombies are nowhere to be seen as a more supernatural threat stalks the dark alleys. From securing safe zones to taking down stronger monsters, players will either need to be part of a group already or make friends with the locals.
However in the future there are plans to add playable Nether creatures, 16 different tribes for players to join and fight battles to take over the city, and more.

Quite often any zombie game which features any form of building is unfairly labelled as a minecraft rip-off with more zombies. For the seasoned Minecraft player the game is extremely easy to pick up and play without missing a beat, resources are mined, items are collected, and bases are built block by block.
Buildings must be structurally sound or they will collapse, meaning players must take extra care especially when building multiple story bases to ensure it can support the weight of the building and players or zombies inside.
Additionally players must worry about how sturdy the pre-existing buildings are, with careless players potentially dying to a collapsing bridge or apartment building. Each night the zombies become faster and more aggressive, they will also head straight for your base in great numbers. Currently under development by The Fun Pimps, 7 Days to Die is in Alpha and still actively being worked on so keep that in mind when playing.


It’s an impressive feat and presents an unfathomable amount of gameplay opportunities for where the player can explore, build, and fight for their life.
Eventually, no matter the scenario you should be able to recreate it and play it out in The Dead Linger. This crosses over to the building and barricading features, planks of plywood and building materials are nailed together with a free building system. Some features are currently only basic implementations and there is still a huge list of features to be added, however the feature list is huge to begin with and the game is definitely not lacking much in its current build.
In the future there will be features such as vehicles, boats, planes, farming, improved character customization, improved crafting and much more. Set in a fictional post-soviet state of Chernarus, players awaken on a beach with very little supplies.
Especially when you are completely surrounded by deadly zombies and psychopathic players just waiting to handcuff you and forcefeed you cleaning products until you vomit and die a painful death. This means other players have no problems shooting others for the chance at one extra clip of ammo or can of beans, and victims must suffer the demoralizing punishment of starting all over again. The game is currently in very early Alpha meaning only the most basic features have been implemented for testing.
Set during the zombie apocalypse in a recreation of the towns Muldraugh and West Point in Kentucky, players are stuck in a quarantine zone. It has everything you would expect from games like DayZ and The Dead Linger but adds its own fresh ideas to the genre. Currently available through Early Access, Project Zomboid is still under development by The Indie Stone.
Weapons are deadly enough that a single foe can be a real threat, making almost every encounter legitimately challenging. Its refreshing spin on sci-fi horror gave players control over combat in a way survival horror typically doesn't, but it restrained itself enough to limit what Clarke had access to. The helplessness and stress of isolation in an unwelcoming place, with limited ammunition and no army behind you, put a stamp on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 generation that, indeed, survival horror had a lot of life left in it after all. Amnesia’s story of a memory best left forgotten is punctuated by the terrors that roam the game, where just a glimpse of those that hunt you can drive your character insane, changing the very fabric of the reality.
The player finds themselves aboard spaceship crawling with mutant alien-human hybrids, with their moans of joining “the many” filling your ears as they search for you, and often screaming for you to kill them or run away. Its marriage of gameplay and story -- quite literally a widowed husband escaping and fighting his own darkness come to life -- creates uneasy themes, challenging subject matter, and terrifying encounters with mysterious, monstrous enemies.
Its amazing atmosphere was brought to life thanks to the power of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It’s super fun, even more so in co-op, beautiful (even to this day) and has a good amount of memorable moments peppered throughout its story.
Jorge, our Editor in Chief, has been sending me dirty, unwanted text messages demanding my personal best game of this generation, and I just can’t do it. Amy has special abilities that help Lana avoid an infection that has spread across the city. Did I mention that the checkpoint system prior to game’s patch was so horrendous that large sections of the game had to be replayed if players were killed? Now I might have gotten most of my play time in on the PC, but I still played a few sessions on the Xbox 360.
This caused a measurable amount of ire, but it was easily ignored as it had no bearing on the story. Two players going through a horror game can be scary, but in this case it presented one new problem and a missed opportunity.
Quickly, the shock value wears off, because sooner or later, with the new weapon upgrade system, the two players will have such powerful weapons there won’t be any fear left. This game was basically a playable novel complete with more than enough richness to enjoy, without shoving it in your face.
The entire point of the game’s advertisement, it seems, was to convince all fans of the previous horror themed games to buy Resident Evil 5 on their word, when it was made for fans of games like Gears of War. Enemies are always a threat and while you’re well-armed and can take them on, it almost always ends up being a option best avoided. These people, while entitled to their opinion, have missed the very point of why Alan Wake is designed the way it is. You have to leave the beaten path to discover these things, and it’ll put you in even more danger as the enemies can attack you at any point. But before Amnesia: The Dark Descent had chilled the bones of players worldwide, there was another game this generation that tried to mix the two genres. If you’ve ever picked up a Tom Clancy novel and thought that you could do with some Anne Rice inside of it, maybe you too can understand whatever went through the developers head when making this game.
The game was far beyond what my Gamecube could handle, featuring revolutionary AI, great level-design and plenty of memorable scares.
The rest of the games on the list call themselves horror games,but they are really just shooters with horror elements. It’s the closest thing we got to the original Silent Hill athmosphere, and by far the most original and unique of the bunch.

The game’s many mechanics would eventually become key parts of its spiritual successor, Bioshock, but the setting, mood, and themes that System Shock 2 carried made it stand apart even to this day as a prominent survival horror game. It’s been basically a couple of years shy of a decade since both juggernauts hit the market.
Seeing Chris all on his lonesome in a desert environment with shadows of monsters swarming around him. Unfortunately, this is also kick-started a trend in horror games, where established series went on to take a more action-oriented co-operative approach to ensure more stacks of cash. There are so many games, so many hours within years that I’ve enjoyed, across different games. Watching gameplay videos led me to hope that AMY would take all the best parts of a survival horror experience and mix it with a little bit of Ico, watching over and assisting someone weaker than you as the role of a caretaker. Then I went back to playing it on the PC again because Valve loves its PC fans, and it shows. However, with the third game came everything we feared (but not the kind of fear we like!). It seems like the game market has become run by mass production, deadlines and release dates – creativity be damned.
Another thing that bothered me was that they used Jill Valentine, my favorite character’s, “death” as another shock ploy to get people to buy the game and find out what happens.
While the game could certainly have been open world, and even was in a earlier stage of development. I hate having to express my love for this game in so few words, so let me just end this by saying that this eight year old game is still a mechanically-better first-person shooter than anything coming out this year. Its corridors and different sectors filled with death, painted with the remains of those who formerly resided there, now claimed by a new strain of horror: the Necromorphs. What we got from developer VectorCell was an unfinished, broken, and terribly designed game. The graphics seemed impressive, especially taking into account that they were on the Xbox 360, which at the time, struggled to produce such amazing looking first party exclusive titles when compared to the PS3. These things would have been enough, but the icing on the cake was that the combat was original and fun. It also was the first part of an ad campaign that would completely mislead gamers as to what they were buying. And the game ensured that players were always immersed in its gruesome world by stripping away any form of traditional HUD. Gears of Evil gameplay, the ridiculous premium version of the game, the anthology that bundles in a ton of better games and the insistence of online multiplayer. Resident Evil 6 was supposed to return Resident Evil to its roots and be the savior of the series. At a time when Call of Duty and Gears of War really had me wondering if video games were going the ways of explosive shooters, I bought Alan Wake and played it for 8+ hours from beginning to end, happy to see something so refreshing. Then, once you get past that, there’s the overall quality of the game which, although it looks nice, borrows so many animations, sounds, and enemies from Resident Evil 4, that it’s just depressing. One could say that upon exploring the world, you come to find that the game is not a lake, it’s an ocean. Sure, the game kept the sunlight-showered environments, but it stripped away that feeling of being alone in a world where monsters lurked and that would stop at nothing to see you dead on the ground. The world feels oddly hollow when you’re by yourself seeing as how everything is built for two.
