Not all that long ago (a little more than a year-and-a-half, to be specific), the four Disney Food Trucks were THE newest thing on the dining scene in Downtown Disney. So our stop today is Namaste Cafe (most often found in Exposition Park on the West Side), the truck inspired by dishes typically served at Animal Kingdom as well as Animal Kingdom Lodge. The menu continues to feature the Naan and Samosa Dipping Safari, Butter Chicken, and Lamb Kefta (a version of which was originally part of the Superstar Catering Food Truck menu inspired by Hollywood Studios, but I think it’s a more natural fit at Namaste). But we can’t wave goodbye to the old year without looking back on some of the biggest food news that happened throughout Disney Parks. Most of this year’s big news happened at Walt Disney World, but we have a few memorable moments to share with you from Disneyland as well as other Disney Parks around the globe.
Well, 2014 finally saw some solid progress, and the Disney Springs story seems to be coming to life.
Lots of changes have made a trip to Downtown Disney a challenge in the last couple of years. 2014 kicked off with a surprise restaurant opening of sorts — the House of Blues added a new counter service offering, The Smokehouse. Also in the Spring, we said hello to a spot that’s quickly become one of our most favorite spots to shop in all of Walt Disney World — the Marketplace Co-op!
We have found some totally awesome stuff in the store’s Disney Centerpiece Section, including dishes, glasses, and other tableware that celebrate all of our Disney cult favorites. But there’s plenty of non-holiday food news as well… Starting in Morocco, Spice Road Table has not only started taking Advance Dining Reservations — they’re also now accepting the Disney Dining Plan.
To offer guests the ability to maximize their one Table Service plan credit, this tapas-based restaurant is now also serving full-sized entrees, including Coriander Crusted Rack of Lamb, Roasted Chicken, and a Mediterranean Vegetable Platter, among others. Staying in Morocco, Tangierine Cafe debuted new entrees as well: a Meatball Platter and Saffron Rotisserie Chicken.

Nestled between Bongos Cuban Cafe and the West Side Starbucks, Food Truck Park provides a home base for the four Disney Food Trucks. The cuisine of each food truck reflects that of a Disney Park, with Superstar Catering representing Hollywood Studios, and Namaste Cafe for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. So if you haven’t had the pleasure, allow me to introduce our picks for the Top 5 Must-Try New Walt Disney World Dining Spots for 2014!
The tiny sorbet and ice cream parlour has tons of Old World charm — quite a feat since it opened, brand-new, in 2013! On any given day, the scoop shop plays host to 16 varying flavors of ice cream and sorbet, made from scratch right here in the France Pavilion.
In the category of frosty drink treats with a grown-up twist, we have this gorgeous Ice Cream Martini.
First up, capitalizing on the hotter-than-hot macaron craze, they’ve introduced cute Chocolate Macaron Sandwiches.
But well inside the space of a year, we have not one but FOUR Food Trucks routinely parked at Downtown Disney!
The Lamb Meatball Sandwich, dripping with generous amounts of Tzatziki Sauce, was a favorite of ours from the get-go!
Meatballs are the name of the game in the Superstar Truck, with other selections including Turkey Sausage and Golden Raisin Meatballs.
And since they feature Butter Chicken, one of my favorite dishes in the universe that I routinely get on my visits to Sanaa, you knew that’s what we would try during our first visit! The official theme of the truck is to bring “Culinary Traditions From Disney Parks Around the Globe to Disney World.” And even though that Hong Kong Disneyland dish and the Be Our Guest featured item look tasty, we definitely recommend your first foray into Food Truck eats should include this Hand-Dipped Corn Dog! Substantial and served alongside those amazing Freshly Made Potato Chips, it’s a hard combo to resist!
The final of the four trucks fulfills another Disney Food Fantasy — a year-round taste of the incredibly popular Epcot International Food and Wine Festival!
Even though each truck has a theme, they also each represent one of the four Walt Disney World Parks.
One seriously fun aspect of this truck is that, in addition to Coca Cola Products and Dasani Water, it also offers Wines by the Glass.
We sampled an incredible Lobster Roll served with House-Made Chips on our first visit to this truck! It will be huge fun to see what other dishes from the Food and Wine Festival pop up on the menu here! For many, it will be a long time before the novelty of drinking their favorite coffee or tea beverage within the Disney Parks wears off.
So whether you choose the Main Street Bakery in Magic Kingdom, or the Fountain View Cafe in Epcot (or both!), Disney is sure you’ll be spending your coffee dollars somewhere inside the gates more frequently now. Billed as a Restaurant Featuring Small Plates, the menu will highlight regional flavors from the Mediterranean. In addition to the exotic menu, guests can enjoy Great Wines representing specific Mediterranean countries.
Disney’s Hollywood Studios has never been much of a destination for sophisticated dining. The Hollywood Brown Derby has been an oasis of fine dining (well, finer, anyway) since the park opened. Serving Specialty Cocktails, Wines by the Glass, and a Menu of Small Plates, you’ll find the Lounge located on the lower level and patio of the existing restaurant.
And with a menu created by the chefs of the Brown Derby, there are some seriously delicious-sounding options to try! So there you have it — five new places that you and I must try during our visits to Walt Disney World in 2014!
Meals are served on one central platter for communal eating and showcase exciting flavours of Ethiopia.
Magnificent all-day breakfasts compliment their famous brioche bun burgers, made with grass-fed beef and Underberger cheese. This is Mexican dining for special occasions and big budgets, but the quality is undeniably excellent. This narrow sliver of Waterfront real estate offers excellent burgers and some of the best ribs in town. This buzzing Kloof Street restaurant is famous for its burgers and double-thick milkshakes. This laid back city eatery serves up cooked-to-perfection burgers that are stuffed with cheesy goodness and are made with locally sourced and sustainable ingredients. This popular hangout serves affordable, surprisingly good food – especially considering its self-consciously seedy bar vibe. Laid out over a series of rooms, this rambling restaurant is a little reminiscent of grandma’s house. Long Street’s famous burger joint has been going since 2003, and the burgers are still fabulous.
Tucked in what looks like a refurbished garage, a street down from Woodstock’s popular Albert Road, Three Feathers offers well-made burgers topped with bacon, cheese, egg, jalapeno, mushroom, in an American-diner themed setting.
There are well-made Thai and Chinese options available, but most regulars, and there are many of them, return for the fresh, good quality sushi. One of the stalwarts of the sushi scene, Beluga offers an extensive sushi and dim sum menu – but hot plates are on point too. Favourites at this neighbourhood restaurant include aromatic crispy duck with pancakes, tender Szechuan beef with orange and cinnamon or the sizzling Mongolian lamb. Cheyne Morrisby turns out fun, bold food inspired by the cuisine of the Pacific Rim in this smart, dark and edgy space.
Somewhat hidden down the pedestrian alley alongside The Rockwell, you’ll find some of the best sushi rice in Cape Town. This cosy Cape Dutch building offers a delightful setting to enjoy an evening attempting to sample some of the vast Asian menu. Famed international chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s local outpost combines the tastes and textures of classic Japanese, Peruvian and South African ingredients.



This stylish restaurant serves up modern Asian tapas paired with a brilliant wine selection. Chef Kerry Kilpin (formerly of La Colombe), serves bistro food and tapas dishes with flair at this Steenberg restaurant.
This perennially busy restaurant is run by the Madame Zingara team, so expect an outlandish space and off-the-wall service.
Namibian German Chef Frank Marks did time at Heston’s Fat Duck and with Luke Dale-Roberts – and it shows. The twin restaurant of Societi Bistro in the city, the Brasserie offers robust flavours of garlic, red wine, herbs and the highest quality ingredients in dishes such as butternut risotto, gnocchi alla romana with burnt sage butter and parmesan, and crispy squid.
Sit on the terrace and soak up the famous Alphen ambience, while you tuck into generous portions of garlic mussels with white wine, cream and crusty bread, or meatballs and tagliatelle with parmesan and a rustic chunky tomato sauce.
This longstanding neighbourhood bistro continues to serve moreish mains like pork belly and mash and ostrich meatballs. Based in a restored Georgian-style home, the restaurant strikes a perfect balance between classy and low key. Expect simply cooked, generous pub grub with fair prices at this quirky, laid-back restaurant. This popular neighbourhood eatery is best known for pizzas, including the signature Tuscan-style slow roasted lamb with creme fraiche.
This cosy restaurant serves up thoughtful breakfasts, lunches (and dinners on Thursdays and Fridays). Warm, cluttered and comfortable, this neighbourhood cafe offers extravagant breakfasts and lunches. An historic building on Constantia Main Road has been transformed into a country-style cafe and deli offering simple breakfast and lunch options, most of them utilising the bakery’s excellent breads. This French-style cafe and bakery has been winning the hearts of Southern Suburbs foodies since the day it opened.
This bustling little eatery is always crammed with regulars who come for the generous portions, fresh and colourful salads and the great vibe, as set by amiable owner Karen Dudley.
This is a real locals’ local, offering big plates of well-cooked, good food at affordable prices. Celebrating twenty years at the helm in 2016, chef patron Harald Bresselschmidt continues to transform local ingredients, with French technique and an Asian spin into something magnificent.
Book a spot on the terrace overlooking the glittering Atlantic ocean and settle down for delicious food that doesn’t rely on tricks to be fabulous.
Chef Ian Bergh uses the freshest local ingredients, some from the farm’s own gardens, to create sublime dishes like sous vide pork belly, with pork medallions and bacon served on potato puree, sundried tomato paste and slivers of orange zest. Peter Tempelhoff’s dramatic fine dining food scored the number four spot in this year’s Top 10.
This year saw chef Rudi Liebenberg breathing life into old classics like seafood cocktail, beef tartare and traditional Caesar salad.
Tapas turns fine dining under the direction of Luke Dale-Roberts and Wesley Randles, with the restaurant cracking the Top 10 for the first time this year.
The Cape Grace’s restaurant offers imaginative food with some traditional Cape flavours, as in the delicious smoked snoek pate served with fig and cardamom chutney and crisp ciabatta. There’s no denying the brilliance of The Test Kitchen, now winner of Restaurant of the Year for the fourth consecutive year. Serving predominately North Indian dishes adapted for South African palates, this long-running restaurant is popular with the business crowd. Tucked away in Fountain Square, this little gem is an oasis for anyone looking for a wide selection of authentic Indian vegetarian and vegan food. Classic, impeccably turned out Italian keeps regulars coming back to Giorgio Nava’s swish Milanese restaurant.
The word hearty springs to mind when describing this food – starter of richly cheesy melanzane alla parmigiana should be shared if you intend on eating a main course. This tried and tested Italian favourite has come to roost in the popular Steenberg Village and is already proving to be a hit with the locals. As with its bigger sister, Burrata, the Neapolitan-style pizzas are a highlight here: the thin, chewy crust ever-so-slightly blackened by the striking 450° oven that dominates the kitchen space. But with all the dining additions to the ever-transforming, will-one-of-these-days-be Disney Springs over the past year, it’s been a while since we’ve had a chance to check out what’s changed at the Trucks! But as the year draws to a close, the parking garages are open, and we are seeing some of the plans take shape!
We say surprise because we told you about the restaurant for the first time just days before the walls came down and the doors opened for business! But the covered outdoor seating is pleasant, and you can often take in live music as you enjoy barbecue favorites, like their Beef Brisket Sandwich, St. Guests at T-Rex Cafe last Spring were in for some decidedly unpleasant dinner excitement, as one of the restaurant’s humongous fish tanks sprang a leak during dinner service!
We’re glad that all turned out happily in the situation, but we’ll never look at those huge fish tanks quite the same way again! This annual festival shares holiday traditions from around the globe through story, music, and — our favorite!
And while the Beach Club’s seasonal carousel was still under construction, we did admire the gorgeous goodies for sale at the Beach Club Marketplace.
He tweeted photographs from his own cupcake crawl, including the Lemon Cupcake and Carrot Cake Cupcake from Epcot’s Sunshine Seasons. We were a little sad to hear that one of our favorite destinations for ice cream, Fountain View Cafe (hand made ice cream sandwiches!!!) would be converting to a Starbucks.
Occupying the space that was previously home to Boulangerie Patisserie in Epcot’s France Pavilion, the shop gave us lots of reasons to venture off the beaten path in search of a refreshing treat. They’re European-inspired flavors, with exotic names like Caramel Fleur de Sel, Coco-White Chocolate, and Profiterole.
These babies start with a Freshly Baked Brioche that’s filled with Ice Cream and and accompanying Sauce. The custom vehicles showcase flavors that have been made famous in Disney Parks all over the globe. The three menu items featured are all served with a combo of Rice and Naan, making them even more delicious! For with the debut of Fantasy Fare Food Truck, finally, Disneyland Hand-Dipped Corn Dogs would come to Walt Disney World. If you wish that the Festival lasted for 12 months instead of seven weeks, you’ll want to check out the World Showcase of Flavors Food Truck first! Ever since we broke the news that a brand new restaurant would be coming to Epcot’s Morocco Pavilion, I’ve been waiting not-so-patiently for the reveal! The emphasis at the park has been super-themed restaurants like 50s Prime Time Cafe or Sci-Fi Dine-In for the most part. Because we could be seeing a hot carryover trend at DHS, with the arrival of the Brown Derby Lounge at the Hollywood Brown Derby.
So if the culinary staff is going to try and introduce the concept of a Wine and Tapas Bar to this Park, it makes sense that this is a good place to do it. I’m so excited that I’ll be able to have a Cocktail and a Cheese Plate, right in the middle of the Studios!! I can’t wait to try the Duck Confit Tacos on my first visit to this brand new hotspot!
It promises to be an exciting year as we explore all of these fun new finds, and we look forward with anticipation to see what else they’ll come up as the year rolls on!
I’m most looking forward to trying L’Artisan des Glaces – I was *this* close to having a taste on my last trip, but I had to save room for the DFB snack attack party! In fact, there are so many fantastic places to try, it can sometimes be impossible to choose. Sample Zambian kandolo balls made of sweet potato; Congolese spinach and a moreish Ghanaian groundnut chicken stew. Try one of the delicate, fragrant ceviches, or the Tamal camarones – steamed masa parcels with prawns and a fantastic tomatillo sauce.
Burgers might feature smoky barbecue sauce, cheddar and mustard or chutney, gruyere and guac. Look forward to glorious creations such as the Whisky Braai-BQ burger, which conceals crispy bacon bits in a sweet, whisky–barbecue with guacamole and smoky cheese.


Famous dishes include the fried chicken waffles, and the home-smoked pulled pork sandwich on a brioche bun.
There are more than 50 options – in every incarnation from beef, chicken, lamb and fish, to pork, ostrich and vegetarian. Owner Yang and her team turn out robust, flavour-rich broths, soft dim sum, and fragrant, zingy noodle dishes.
A beef slider with Szechuan pepper and king oyster cream is topped with mini tempura onion rings and the famous ‘deep-fried milk’ features fragrant coconut cream cubes, battered and fried, with green chilli caramel.
The menu is very brief, and its stars are the char siu pork belly ramen and the tofu and bok choi versions in umami-rich broths. Think grilled prawns on steamed buns with coriander and lime sauce, or 12-hour duck on soft ramen tacos with almond ginger hummus and fresh orange. Chef Tookta hails from the Ubon Ratchathani province in Thailand, and her flavours are on the money. The cosy and trendy interior make for a great spot for that after-work drink and dinner with the cool crowd. Standouts include phad medmamuang – wok-fried cashew nuts infused with chilli paste and your choice of either duck, chicken, prawn or tofu filling; and phad kra tha rong, wok-fried vegetables in a special red sauce with your choice of protein. A chalkboard menu offers moreish dishes like Asian cabbage salad with crisp cubes of pork belly and prawns; and tender confit duck leg with Savoy cabbage. The constantly changing menu might include a silken cauliflower soup with a dash of truffle oil or a masterful chicken pie, with gravy. Think Coq au Vin made with chicken breasts with baby onions, rich red wine sauce, and crisp bacon slices piercing the parmesan mash – irresistible.
You’ll find warming marrowbone soups in winter and zingy salads such as shaved coleslaw with prawns, golden sultanas, chilli and fresh ginger in summer.
Standout dishes include fillet medallions with pepper sauce, Mozambican style prawn curry and the rich, creamy chicken limone.
Dishes might include homemade pork sausages with truffle mash and chicken pie with triple-cooked chips.
Breakfasts are made with free-range eggs and artisan bread and lunches and dinners comprise well-executed burgers, open and hot-pressed sandwiches, and inventive salads. Think French toast with bacon, maple syrup, lemon curd and caramelised bananas or avo on toast with fresh tomatoes and sprigs of rocket. They might include broekies (the world’s most delicious brownie cookies), peanut butter maple bacon croissants or crayfish and mac and cheese pies. An eclectic mix of antique crockery adds to the feeling of visiting a beloved aunt’s house. Try a tofu scramble or a breakfast wrap, which combines tempeh bacon, tofu scramble, caramelized onion and rocket in a flour tortilla with a ‘cream cheese’ spread. Eggs are free-range and bread is homemade and includes whole wheat, 70% rye, sourdough and zero carb bread made with linseed and olive oil.
The edgy urban interior with views of the buzzing Buitengracht Street make for the perfect pit-stop for city dwellers.
Dishes include a great retro crayfish and prawn cocktail with avocado and Marie Rose sauce, prawn dahl with creamed cauliflower, green mango chutney and cumin yoghurt and superb prawns Stroganoff.
The chocolate variation – with its miniature chocolate grand piano – is still just as good as it’s always been.
The Underberg cheese souffle and an excellent burger served with top-quality bacon and some of the best onion rings ever are highlights.
Made with Dalewood’s Huguenot, the Four Degrees of cheese –featuring a souffle, cheese ice cream, panna cotta and shavings of cheese – is unmissable. Pellegrino Chef of the Year Scot Kirton is a master at plating pretty food, and at his new venue in the Silvermist Wine Estate, came in at number two in this year’s Top 10.
In the elegant Tudor house, chef Henry Vigar turns out fine dishes like an artichoke granola with wood sorrel, or a classic Bouillabaisse with kabeljou, crispy prawns and mussels. The chef demonstrates flair and mastery of technique in sublime reductions, mousse, purees and sauces – while unusual venison dishes tempt visitors with warthog, gemsbok, kudu and springbok in season. Thick pile carpets, polished wood, and huge crystal chandeliers make for a luxuriously serene space. Sample North Indian-style lamb biryani and paneer in a spinach (palak) sauce and a rich tomato gravy (shahi). The lamb off the bone curry, prawn curry, chilli bites, and cardamom-spiced vermicelli pudding are outstanding.
With most of the curries costing R55, and even less for the bunny chows and the wraps, it’s undeniably excellent value for money.
The small plate of cavatelli, broccoli cream, anchovies and oregano flowers won at the World Pasta Championship competition in 2013 and is a must, and the ossobuco is one of the best in the city. Decor is the traditional red walls and spotless white tablecloths, but crowd-pleasing food means there’s always a healthy buzz. Try crispy, thin-based pizzas with seasonal fresh toppings or one of the comforting pastas. But our blues faded away the very first time we stepped foot into L’Artisan des Glaces.
They’re pushing the envelope with not one but THREE fun ice cream snacks that ensure I pop into the shop nearly every trip.
Whether you love or hate Starbucks, the announcement that the Seattle-based coffee giant was finally forming an alliance with Disney was enormous news. And if there are two more recognizable brands in the world, I’m not sure what they are. So far, we’re hearing about dishes like Harissa Chicken (a Food and Wine and Flower and Garden Festival favorite!), a Mediterranean omelet, Mussels and Jumbo Shrimp, with lots more in the works. And if the success of Tutto Gusto and La Cava del Tequila is any indication, Spice Road Table will be another hot Epcot stop for sure!
Here’s our list of the best restaurants in the Mother City in every category from bistros to Italian, fine dining to steakhouses. You might receive home-pickled veg instead of bread, and calamari comes with an absinthe aioli. The sweet potato fries with ketchup, sweet chilli, and sour cream have their own following. Shared seating makes Beijing a great spot for single diners at lunch, and large groups at dinner.
The dark but glamorous interior can get a little loud, so opt for a table by the bar at the front if you want more privacy. Flavours are clean and elegant – don’t expect sweet chilli sauce or deep-fried California rolls here.

By day the charming Heritage Square courtyard is first prize for seating, come evening the courtyard takes on a magical candlelit feel. The stylish, semi-industrial interior faces onto an outside deck shielded from busy Hertzog Boulevard by a handful of trees.
Located in a quiet corner shop with windows looking out onto busy Hans Strijdom Avenue, it’s at its best in the evening.
Dark grey walls, golden light fittings and vintage type, make this popular with freelancers and Macbook owners.
Main meals arrive in generous portions and range from tasty beer-battered hake and chips to farmhouse cheese platters, and sticky mustard and marmalade spatchcocked chicken. Gun-metal grey, chalkboards, golden vinyl croissants – and invariably queues – mark the spot. The recently refurbished restaurant is also the recipient of the 2015 Boschendal Style Award, for its understated charcoal walls, bare wooden tables and leather chairs. Lift the lid of a tin to find a Lilliputian seared tuna tataki, or savour the Asian-style pork with scallops, kimchi, lemongrass and ginger. Think smoked beef fillet with truffle-cafe-au-lait sauce or ash-baked celeriac with tahini, lentils, mint, goat’s cheese and a 25-year-old balsamic vinegar.
Dishes might include springbok liver, chestnuts, beetroot and cocoa nib, or shiitake in squid-ink chawanmushi.
